Based on Phils sentiment regarding needing to do better delivering content and Xbox repeatedly suffering issues in this area, I’m anticpating that we’ll see Xbox look to double the number of studios they have (post ATVI). Ultimate goal imo is around 60 studios.
Still have another major publisher purchase and at least a dozen independents that theyll add.
I don’t think that’s a good idea. Look at what Ubisoft is doing with FC or AC, of course sales are still there, but there is a feeling of overexploitation that is felt. I think it’s better to let certain franchises breathe and explore the huge catalog of unused licenses they have. On the other hand I agree for TES or Fallout which deserve more releases.
I agree with you. They need to acquire more studios to ensure regular content. I think acquiring publishers is better because they come with a huge license catalog and are already functional. Regarding the studios, I see them above all securing the partner studios on a case-by-case basis.
Depends if the solution is to work on making their current studios more consistent, whether by perhaps expanding their existing teams or buying/opening new support studios, or if the solution is to buy more studios to increase their output to cover for such inconsistencies.
It is not l ike their studios are inconsistent in the first place though. A lot of their acquisitions happened when the studios had some contracts they needed to complete. And when contracts were fullfiled, COVID struck. Add to that various other events across the world, people changing the jobs and so on.
Xbox giving too much freedom to the studios might contributed to the feeling that their studios are inconsistent (ability to freely delay the game till whatever time or reboot as many times as you want, or just travel around the world to find the inspiration), but it is a good thing on a long run though. Howevver, they do need more studios, that’s for sure.
Xbox doesn’t really need more studios for regular content, the studios are there to maintain a pipeline, it is just taking time for the pipeline to get started. Post Activision XGS is stacked for content.
60 studios is excessive. That is 1 game a month at a 5 year development cycle, excluding studios that have multiple teams.
Not necessary as game development is not linear. We don’t know if the game will become rebooted or cancelled after some time due to some reason, or delayed. And it would break the stable flow.
And even with 20 studios right now (and they have multiple teams), we don’t have 20 exclusive games per year (and that includes their third party deals).
Yeah, not every game is going to take 5 years, it’s just an average. Some months will have multiple, some will have none. I think you can guarantee that every quarter will have some (which is their stated goal).
20 studios at 5 year development cycle would deliver 20 games over 60 months, or one per quarter.
If they want to become the Netflix of video games, they will need many more studios. Look at the year 2022, of course there was the COVID, but it’s still an extremely poor year… ABK will not bring a lot of additional releases. Having more studios also means being able to produce and control your own content, without going through XGP or expensive deals to supply the gamepass during the famine. Beyond releases, acquiring other major publishers like EA, Take Two or even Ubisoft also means securing a significant annual profit that can be reinvested in other projects.
I don’t see it, I think WB Discovery and Paramount are both better acquisitions that would be far cheaper but that is just my opinion…infact I will be honest, I think netflix is kind of shit now a days
Honest opinion, MS should just grab EA and T2 but I highly doubt they will limit themselve to 1 country just for the sake of it
I don’t think its either of that, I think this focus’s way to much on the present when MS is clearly MS focus is clearly on the long term so the question is more which would benifit them in a decade for example but that is just my 2 cent on this
Capcom, IO, Asobo, Remedy, Playtonic, Platinum games (or if I can cheat, change platinum for atlus from SEGA but that might be cheating)
nah cos those studio’s would of been working on shit prior to the acquisition, I think its just an outlier
I don’t particularly buy the thought that Microsoft is looking to buy out Netflix with the ad deal, it just seems like a big win for their ad unit that has recently acquired additional pieces, and a potential way to swing part of the business of Netflix using AWS over to Azure (I doubt it would be all of Netflix’s cloud business, seems like the trend there is more to use multiple providers to avoid outages a bit more).
That being said, we do know that Microsoft was looking for some way into a social platform, and I could see Netflix looking into ways to differentiate themselves from other streaming platforms, and Microsoft theoretically still has some knowledge of the streaming tech that Mixer used. This is totally out there, but what if they did consider a merger with the goal of creating a social viewing network based around their content? We know that they did the Xbox Netflix parties back on Xbox 360, and Disney is doing group watch which allows people to view together. What if Netflix was able to let subscribers view along with their favorite channel and have content that was game/show based (As Dusk Falls would fit too), find some extra features or trivia during shows? This could make sense to both parties.
So even though I personally don’t think this is happening or was the goal, it does have some pieces that make a lot of sense to me.
