Xbox Acquisition |OT6| If this is about competition, let us have competition

Are you referring to games such as GetsuFumaDen? (I think even this has a port now). Some games aren’t going to sell outside of their select regions anyway, so why would they go to the effort/expense of translating and/or dubbing the game for minimal to no return?

I keep seeing you state this, but what do you mean by it? If a Japanese developer could potentially reach 80-100 million customers but most of those customers aren’t in Japan (much like PS) what would they care about their legitimacy in Japan?

Considering that a lot of devs do not bother with Windows Store version of the game (despite not having UWP requirements anymore), I think even that minimal amount of work does not matter to them (granted a lot of games not on EGS either).

A lot of devs still want to sell their games in their country of origin and Microsoft is seen as unreliable western partner there (justifiably though). So Microsoft either has to gain strong foothold there - like “yeah, we can’t ignore the platform that owns XXX” - or achieve a decent amount of sales there (PS is partially still rides PS4 popularity). Otherwise, Microsoft will always have to pay to get the content on their platform (granted they did that with OG Xbox).

On a separate note, reading the news and damn WB has a lot of issues with DC movies these days. Actors leaving, various other stuff. DC IPs are becoming tainted basically. With them tanking from 60b to 33b and no path to go higher - for now at least - I wonder if they board can considering selling the whole WB. Consider their issues with movies, I wonder who might be interested as they will have to take the debt and deal with the potentially cancelled shows and movies.

Ok got you, based on my previous comments I still don’t think either is necessary tbh. The PlayStation doesn’t even sell that well in Japan anymore.

Microsoft just needs a large market share and it doesn’t necessarily need to be in Japan (I think that it will naturally grow in Japan as its overall market share grows).

Even if tomorrow Xbox brought Square I doubt it would cause a surge of Xbox sales in Japan, the players would move to PC or maybe even try cloud.

Final Fantasy is a prime example, the bulk of the players is not in Japan but in USA and Europe. Europe in particular has around 4x as many players as Japan. If Xbox grew it’s market share in Europe (had more consoles/users) compared to PlayStation or Nintendo it would essentially force someone like Square to develop their game for Xbox as they would be missing out. ABK will help this but they could easily continue this by getting another large publisher in the west.

Yep someone really needs to buy WB and reboot DC Feige style.

Maybe you could suggest that to Elon Musk. I hear he has some funds available now …

Anyways, kind of offtopic so won’t go further into WB stuff.

Do microsoft need to take the risk? Like yea those ips are so popular and all but it is really worth it?

WB is a tough sell since they have 60 billion debt vs Activision 4 billion debt (especially in a rasing rates market). Presumably they will be sold close to Activion levels at 60 billion. But they are slowly destroying themselves with all the things that happened.

Thats why ABK will suddenly acquire all of their studios and MK IP before the acquisition :3

Not WB but I must admit I did wonder if ABK would announce an acquisition of a publisher/studio (before they announced Proletariat). I was thinking someone like Ubisoft as they are on dodgy ground, imagine how many people they could put on CoD .

Hahaha! you guys know I’m just jocking but since Blizzard acquire that (kinda big if I say so) studio this thought has been sticked in my mind “what if ABK did a major acquisition?” Like, I dont know…IOI, Asobo, CA, NetherRealm :eyes:

Would be crazy wouldnt it? This thread should be renamed Activision acquisiton [OT] because I have the feeling they will acquire a couple more studios to support their games and xbox is stuck ik a Limbo until the acquisition is completed

Man, xbox could really use someone like ubisoft, is a shame they let sumo go

Hopefully they will not let ubi go aswell

Certain Affinity would make complete sense and wouldn’t be suspicious at all with their history on COD.

I think they would have had to disclose it when submitting any documentation to the FTC.

Agreed, I guess it will come down to timing.

Guess Microsoft did not want to pay that price for Sumo. It was not an acquisition that MS desperately needed to bid more.

I find this ironic because you went on me about saying street fighter was one of the most popular fighters because of sales but sonic rarely passes 1 millions sales now a days. Their ae benifits to SEGA but that is literally the case with any publisher, the question wasn’t the benifits to acquiring SEGA though it was why do people talk about them so much which nostalgia definitely has a large part to play in. Diveristy is definitely a plus to SEGA but a lot of those IPs are dead currently so take that as you will and I think most gaming companies have a lot of value so not really an exclusive thing to SEGA. Not massive in what PC guys like so I will take your word for that part (I know total war is popular on PC though) but even then MS has the partership with riot and are buying blizzard so that ain’t a hole in the slightest.

I think capcom is really over looked. Like they are not as expensive as other publishers probably costing a max of 10 Billion dollars and have such an amazing catalog of IP from resident evil to monster hunter to the capcom vs’s series to street fighter to megaman to devil may cry to ace attorney and so on. If MS bought 1 more publisher I would say they would be one of the best choices.

TRUTH

I almost 100% agree. I disagree with some of the publisher choices (namely epic) but I easily see MS targeting someone like EA or T2 before someone like SEGA. Valve is weird since they are not really a target for IP but I see MS wanting them because steam intergration with windows is such a good move granted I doubt valve wants to sell. But yeah, I am with you on this one.

I don’t think they are overlooked here though, but due to them being highly successful for now people find them an unlikely option.

But Capcom indeed is one of the best options

  • no ties with other industries
  • a set of active long running IPs (Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, DMC, DD, SF etc.) that are not dead and actually have teams that can work on those games

I think that if Microsoft were to target Valve it would be mainly due to Steam. But considering that their state of stores are not that bad anymore (with Xbox Store being better and Battle Net), I do think that maybe for now it is kinda unlikely. It all boils down to whatever Gabe is gonna do.Valve also has VR and Steam Deck.

Yeah, they are definitely up there. They are in the top 5 best buys at minimum and out of the 3rd party publishers I think the only ones with fair argument to be better buys are EA, T2 and Ubisoft and I would put capcom over Ubisoft personally…If I am being objective I think EA and T2 are better but they are also much more expensive.

I don’t think you can compare those store fronts to steam but thats just me. Steam is insanely dominate but thats more a windows purchase than a gaming one but valve has other plus’s like VR and the steam deck like you said but I don’t think they are as big of plus’s as steam (or even close)

They are not and that’s why I mentioned that they still ride that PS4 wave. However they are 1m+ seller still and still target for a lot smaller devs (and probably again due to legacy). I do think that as soon as PS4 dies (it will take a couple of years still), PS5 might still get smaller games due to the amount of consoles sold (it will be 2m+ by that time I believe).

When Nintendo introduces Switch Pro, the dynamics might change of course if Pro is that more powerful than basic Switch but we will see.

Currently, nothing will cause the surge of Xbox sales in Japan (maybe only Series S) because they mostly sell everything they have (crazy to think that we have a generation where we can sell consoles without even having exclusive games, that’s how the market has changed).

Doubt. SE is such an oddball that I believe that won’t bother still.

It is very big but I was surprised to learn that EGS is actually only has 2 times smaller MAU than Steam.

Hmm they have some of the largest player bases in the world.

Counter Strike, DOTA and Team Fortress are huuuugge. Plus you know a new Half Life entry would sell ridiculously well.

Outside of League of Legends I suspect DOTA is the next biggest MOBA worldwide.

I would say Counter Strike is probably the biggest tactical shooter worldwide (occasionally maybe R6 Siege).

Arguably the biggest pull is the platform itself and how many users it has, after all it is biggest PC store by far.
