Xbox Acquisition |OT6| If this is about competition, let us have competition

Microsoft really needs to work with these new start ups with talented devs and create new IPs with them especially in genres they lack like AAA third person narrative games. Sony is doing something similar partnering with these new studios to make FPS games a genre they lack in

I doubt Netherrealms would be looked at by the CMA the acquired company needs to make £70 million a year in the UK to be reviewed

But do we really need more “Sadventures of prehistoric woman/Dadventures of Sad Dad and son”? I settle for quirky fun games with happy colors and blue skies. You cannot outsony Sony anyway. IT’s like outCoking Coke when you’re Pepsi. Stick to your own fanbase who saw Xbox as “Dreamcast’s successor”.

They need to release more though, as things are going dreadfully slow at the moment.

Lol I wouldn’t mind some Tomb Raider like games coming from Microsoft

While I’d lvoe the SEGA aquisition, people forget that SEGA is more a themepark/orchestra company than a software company. There is a reason SEGA of America was a different company (that ruined SEGA in Europe btw… gosh… awful music and voice acting from that place… not to mention the weird campaigns only focusing on 4 countries :frowning: ).

Buying stock in SEGA, like owning 30 a 40% thus guaranteeing any SEGA games come to game-pass… is far more lucrative for Xbox. Although again… I’d love for them to buy SEGA and get a SEGA console exclusive world again. I just also know that this is unlikely to happen. :frowning: .

Maybe, I just think that supporting developers like Double Fine is a better path to success for them than to buy exclusive rights to Tomb Raider. They did that before, it didn’t go well.

I mean making new IPs similar to Tomb Raider with these new dev start ups.

I think new IPs in general is a good idea, doesn’t have to be Turd Person Sadventures with littered with QTEs (sorry I have a chip on my shoulder with that stuff lol :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: ) .

If it happens organically, like the stunning looking (but totally not my kind of game) Hellblade 2? Sure, but let developers design their own stuff. But I do agree, they need new IPs and things need to speed up.

They have the devs, they just need to let them be… devvy :joy:

When we say “let the devs design their own stuff”, insofar as it often ties in with comments about Xbox in particular being ‘hands off’ with its studios, I feel there’s often something important overlooked, namely the fact devs aren’t a unified group following their own inspiration, there’s always a project head who gives direction. Most devs just do what they’re told to do. The actual direction is handled by very few people.

So Xbox needs direction with its studios.

I don’t agree. One needs to let DoubleFine be DoubleFine. Too much interference will really ruin their creativity. And yes there is a “project head”, but outside of output, MS needs to let the devs do their own thing with their own project heads.

They will still come to MS for the “Okay” on the projects. But if you tell them what to do? You’ll lose them. And really I don’t need another Sony where they close studios like Japan Studios (which actually produced fun games) and it’s now just “Sadventures!” all around, because marketing likes that.

I believe that if Microsoft needs a AAA third person studio for instance instead of forcing Obsidian they could find a new studio to do it. The only thing that needs to be mandated from the top is quality control besides that let the creatives do their thing

I rather think they need to focus in optimizing and streamlining what they have as well. They have quite some talent in house, and it needs to start pumping. One does this by helping developers out, and not by a top down approach. These folks wish to create, and running into obstacles is what is keeping them from creating. Microsoft needs to make sure these obstacles aren’t there or mitigated.

So I agree, rather than to force Obsidian to do something, it is better to find someone that wants to create what you wish. I still think “Sadventures” will not be a wise thing to “force”, as you can’t outSony, Sony. It’ll just be a forced thing and reviewers will shoot it down as ‘Not Sony!’. To succeed one needs to have their own niche.

But I also can understand you wishing such games though, not saying that is wrong.

Once again:

When have I complained about a new studio making a game? New studios have an excuse and can take 6 or more years to release something and I’m not talking about Microsoft building a new studio but rather partnering with an existing studio

your post literally says “new start ups” cmon guy

Yes they are existing studios? I’m not sure why you are so aggressive holy shit

“new start up studios” are studios in the building stage not just “existing.” not sure why you’re confused.

Buying Sega will be mostly for the IPs which they need.

I’m thinking he means studios like Archetype or that Studio developing Stellar blade, these studios have games in the work that should be released within the next year. It certainly something Sony seems to be doing. I do think Microsoft is doing this though already. I do think they need ABK and at least 2 more publishers. One in Japan and one in South Korea then these publishers can acquire new studios under them.

It should depend on the size of the team & the budget of the project. I mean when we’re seeing budgets in the tens of millions of dollars, some creative oversight is an absolute must. Just like a movie production.

Naughty Dog for example have extremely high employee turnover, with lots of people coming & going during development & basically following a road map handed to them by their boss. Meanwhile Druckmann (for example) is the creative lead & everything goes through him & depends on his vision.

That’s what Xbox needs. It needs creative heads.
