Haha. I heard you guys wanted revamped Achievements so we turned them into NFTs - Phil
I haven’t posted any thoughts on the Activision acquisition since all the CMA related stuff started a couple of weeks ago. But I finally had time this morning. The post is over in the Activision acquisition thread if anyone is interested.
I think Pearl Abyss would be a good acquisition for Microsoft. With Microsoft wanting to grow in Asia, I think getting a Korean studio would be beneficial
In my opinion, there are still no interesting Korean publishers. The ones that are there only produce free-to-play online mmo of mediocre quality
it is easier for a western video game to be played in asia than vice versa.
that’s why Konami, Capcom, Square Enix, Nintendo, Bandai Namco, Sega, From Software, Kojima, Platinum are the only ones selling as much in asia as in the west.
I am amazed that no one has picked up any Japanese publisher
Hmm although I partly agree as Blizzard games are very popular in Korea there are always exceptions. Pearl Abyss (above) for example.
Krafton are also Korean and have a few AAA games such as PUBG and the upcoming Callisto Protocol. Smilegate and Nexon are also huge.
they already have diablo and cod
I don’t tend to speak much on Korean acquisitions simply because I don’t really know a whole lot about the Korean gaming market - I certainly know a LOT less than I do about it than I do the Japanese gaming market. But looking it up I can see that South Korea is the 4th biggest gaming market in the world, split mostly between PC and mobile and Blizzard games are quite popular there - seems to me that Microsoft is in an excellent position to expand their currently small presence there with PC Gamepass, King and Blizzard, and could benefit a lot from doing so. I’d say any additional moves they could make to strengthen their position in S Korea would only be a good thing as a result, including acquisitions, even if that doesn’t necessarily interest everyone. Plus I’d personally love to see what a wider range of creative voices can do for Xbox, so I’d be happy seeing what kind of content Korean first party would make for Xbox.
Japanese publishers usually either have some side business, family ownership and other stuff due to the history. Unlike western publishers.
With Bandai I’d even argue that gaming is the side business compared to their toy and anime businesses.
Japanese acquisitions seems inevitable at this point
Internet will be a fun when that announcement is made
There has really only been two publisher acquisitions and they were both by Microsoft. I know its acquisition season, but Microsoft is the only one throwing around big money.
Not entirely true. While I’d say the most significant publisher acquisitions have been made by MS, there have been a few other relevant ones.
Zynga acquired by Take-Two.
Embracer acquired Gearbox.
Embracer acquired Saber Interactive.
Tencent acquired Sumo Digital.
MiSK Foundation acquired SNK.
Bytedance acquired Moontone.
Tencent acquired Leyou.
Now, some of these are mobile specific acquisitions, so they don’t get as much of a highlight, but it’s kinda scary to think that then see the price tags floating around.
Also, I didn’t include any acquisitions before 2020 for the sake of simplicity.
Yeah I didn’t really consider the mobile ones and forgot about some of these smaller ones.
Most of these are I’m the 1.X billion range, which is much a different league than what I was referring to.
I am glad ms is staying far away from buying a Japanese studio/publisher. Stick to where the big market is USA. Once gabe sells steam to poppa ms we can finally have a good store front. Figure within 10 years.
Having two of the biggest publishers on usa I dont think they will go for another one
They will 100% go after Japan.
If they are smart, which they seem to be, they won’t touch them. Stick to the market who actually buys your product and not a small whiny fanbase.
Luckily the understand the importance of Japanese content and having a diverse library.
Disagree, Japan it’s very important and I’ve agree with TheBrightestSun, they are going after Japan market and it’s highly probably that their next acquisition is from there.
