What aobut Turtle rock you said MS was going to buy them as well
With MS vision for the industry and where its heading, the traditional model that the Japanese adhere to just doesnt fit with Xbox and thier plans.
They are buying up the biggest IP in the business thats always on, and played continuously. COD, Minecraft, ES etc.
This is what they are after.
That same Twitter account even talked about this a few months ago

With Sony I think they are also following that same path but they can’t afford the biggest IPs so instead they are trying to make their own service games stick.
I’m honestly getting a bit sick of the talk about Japan.
Thanks for this, very informative. Even Xbox fans in Korea and Japan think its unlikely.
Sega with Total War, Relic, Football Manager, Creative Assembly etc, fit the bill, even then its unlikely MS will spend north of 10bn when they can just contract.
Something to consider is that Xbox getting more into the Japanese market does not need to go through console. They can get a share of that market with mobile and PC.
I’m not sure that is the direction they’ll take but it is a method that doesn’t require getting commitment and trust from users there. They could also point to all the success they’ve had with Minecraft for this direction.
The search would then turn to what mobile or pc publishers have high popularity games there.
Just to be clear since I am confused with all this things about japan, xbox should just need to give up at this point if they are never going to grow there? The same for korea and other regions
Sure having big ips for gamepass such as gta or any other is important for ms but thats not going to make them grow in other places
If Microsoft is unable to get a studio in Japan then I think Microsoft should expand Tango Gameworks into a massive studio and also have Microsoft to continue to partner with Japanese developers.
Technically it still would, the reason most games skip Xbox over PS is that they sell more on PS, because historically it’s been the more popular console.
If all of a sudden Xbox has the biggest IP’s, more people will buy Xbox consoles. More devs will then see the value in developing their games for Xbox as it will have a bigger audience.
This will include devs from the eastern markets which will also encourage more Xbox sales in asia which will then go full circle. Apart from Nintendo most of the prominent Japanese games are third party.
The obsession with Japanese studio’s and Japanese games is so fucking tiresome, just buy a Switch.
I doubt they have phases lol, they are not the MCU. They probably just have a list of targets and I will be honest, I wouldn’t be shocked if Microsoft is currently in talks with another publisher
I don’t see how take two is pushing it at this point, also while I think focusing so strongly on 1 market isn’t something likely for Microsoft to do. Like microsoft probably wants to attract the casual market in general not just target a countries market IMO, Capcom and SEGA could be good buys which would fit that more casual focused perspective though
they are publicly traded so yeah, they have to put their shareholders 1st. Microsofts already come close to acquiring square and considered buying SEGA…Bill ended up saying they weren’t strong enough to compete against sony
Don Matrick, is that you?
The obsession with buying another major publisher like Take-Two/EA/Activision is tiresome. Go buy their games off the store.
At least we’d be getting something out of a Japanese acquisition, even if they stayed multiplat.
Edit: Obviously the hope is Microsoft can fix ABK, but that’s not the point I’m making here.
There is a notion among some folks that Microsoft should abandon asian market (and Japan specifically) for some reason. It is strange that people want to get less games, not more
I don’t think they should abandon them, I just doubt that is even close to Microsoft’s main focus. Picking up Capcom or SEGA help expand more in the casual sense while helping expand into Asia so they could be good pick ups but Japan is just a small fraction of the gaming community at large. I think Microsoft will focus on trying to get games which will attract casual gamers on game pass while maybe buying a few studios in Japan for the specific purpose of explanding into that market
I don’t think it’s people wanting less games over more, it’s priorities and people (arguably) overestimating the importance of Japanese studios.
I can think of a lot of things that would be more impactful to Xbox/Game Pass success than JRPGs.
Nintendos not off the table. Doesnt matter if its 5, 10 years down the line. It wouldnt be that much more then ActiBlizzion money.
While I agree a Japanese publisher wouldn’t necessarily be the biggest get, I do feel it fills a large gap in Xbox’s portfolio.
Most of the Japanese publishers not only make JRPGs, but also action and fighting games. Those are areas Xbox could majorly grow in on a first party front.
Ok, let’s say next Monster Hunter is not coming to Xbox. Who cares about Japanese games after all? Japan is not only JRPGs though. Xbox also does not have (albeit Chinese) Genshin Impact.
Not to mention who knows if Japan will have another gaming renaissance for example and abandoning the market for some reason?
