They are working on a major pillar franchise for Xbox which will drive subs for years to come.

I agree. I don’t think they would be a top priority for Microsoft at the moment if they primarily make mobile games and haven’t really established themselves with console gaming yet. But it would be an interesting acquisition as well since they do produce anime and manga and have a company size of 5000 employees which could make it a huge acquisition.

Yep, exactly that. I believe MS are attaching Eidos to themselves now so in the advent Sony buy out SE, they will get the western studios.

FromSoft is the next one?

Depends on what the contract is and if Square Enix was acquired, it would depend on who the company acquiring them is. If it’s a third party company like Capcom or someone, then I don’t think anything changes but if it was Sony, I think Crystal Dynamics would be pulled from the project once the deal is legally finalized because unlike Microsoft, Sony has a killer mentality (just like Nintendo) and aren’t here to be buddies with their competition. Also, I don’t think it would take that long for the new company to take over. Bethesda was six months from announcement to closure. I would think that it would be around the same time frame for Square Enix.

Of course, I do believe that Microsoft acquires Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider IP before the year ends because it would be a small acquisition and one that could be easily completed while the Activision Blizzard deal is still going through the legal process.

Yeah, I can see this happening but I do think that Crystal Dynamics is far more likely to be acquired separately with the Tomb Raider IP than a package deal with Eidos Montreal especially since a package deal would raise the cost and take longer to complete legally.

I personally believe that Microsoft should and probably is go after Crystal Dynamics now. I wouldn’t wait. Get them before someone else does.

Who is making the new tomb raider? Crystal dynamics? Eidos? Or both?

If they’re spending money they’ll acquire the whole company while keeping all SE Japan multiplat but at least guaranteeing gamepass launches. That just seems to be the right way to handle this.

I just can’t see if at all, if it was Sony they will have to spend around 8-9 billion to acquire Square as it is. We know Sony as a whole only have 10 billion to spend so why would they waste even more money buying them out of a contract which by then would likely be a year in.

Bethesda was a private company, Square is Public and even if it was announced soon we are already nearing May (6 Months = November).

Sony doesn’t really have a reason to buy out a pub when I think about it. Their sub doesn’t do day one games and old games are easy to get on a sub service.

Eh… I’ll be frank, I think except for Blue Dragon the rest were considered very underwhelming, this was one of the reasons why they dropped the ball so hard post 2010 on Japan, their main goal was to have support from all big companies and part of the smaller ones on day and date and they did it.

I see Square as a chance because they are acting akward and greedy mixing with up flops as if they are trying to woo the possibility of an acquisition by displaying themselves “well integrated into trends” but being disastrous like Zenimax was. I even remember back last year or 2020 when the word came out that Square was looking out for a buyer and was denied hours later, didn’t @Shpeshal_Nick say that Microsoft was one of the interested parties?

The destiny of Square Enix will be decided by 2023-2024. Though I remember Grubb mentioned that between Konami, Square Enix, Capcom (or was it Sega) one of those publishers will be acquired by the end of this year.

One one hand Ubisoft + Square Enix two acquisitions would probably have less scrutiny than Activision - at least not at the same scale of political grandstanding due to smaller size. But at the same time ATVI deal was a huge opportunity for a lot of reasons - and after that other acquisitions will be a breeze.

I’m sorry what? Ubisoft is 19,000 employees and the current grandstanding is geared towards and equity/proper treatment of their respective employees, so how is that smaller than ABK (which has roughly half of said employees).

While Ubisoft is big, in their market cap they are small and they more european company rather than USA company. And I am not sure but Ubisoft is not involved in the open lawsuits like ATVI which makes ATVI easier target I think.

I think some of you need to let go of these arbitrary labels (not just directed at you); nearly every first-party Xbox studio has fulfilled many of the aforementioned roles within the organization, so the idea that Microsoft would acquire purely as a “support studio” (especially when none of their acquisitions have been such), isn’t one that aligns with reality. In a lot of ways, every acquisition Bethesda and beyond is defensive but that doesn’t symbolize anything about their place or function within the organization.

As for Crystal Dynamics specifically, they’ve been notated to be the primary development studio on Perfect Dark so whatever justification may be present if they were to be purchased, their function on this specific project is effectively as that of Lead Developers.

Market cap is vastly different sure, but in regards to the focus that Warren et. al are focusing on for Xbox’s current acquisition schema, it has nothing to do with market cap or even content availability; as mentioned ad nauseam, they are encouraging the FTC to look at the impact on employees at ABK. Also, Ubisoft absolutely is being sued by several entities over their mistreatment of staff (here’s one example: Engadget is part of the Yahoo family of brands); maybe you’re not aware because it’s in France, where they’ve taken a similar hardline on large-scale mergers as well. The aforementioned suits are one of the primary reason their value has dropped so much.

FTR: I’m not at all saying I agree with the stances that either the FTC or Warren et all are taking. Just painting the picture as is it is at the moment, even if we wish it were different.
