The difference is that Nintendo literally moved into a different niche by becoming a hybrid between 3DS and Wii. Maybe with enough publishers Microsoft can do that too in the future but for now Playstation and Xbox are in the tug of war. It will be more interesting when Switch will release a more powerful model…
Xbox makes more money than Nintendo without some of these Japanese titles. You, and others, are completely missing the point: Japanese games, even in Japan don’t draw the numbers you people think they do. Aside from Final Fantasy XIV, there’s not a single non-Nintendo Japanese title that sells on the scale of something like Skyrim, GTA, CoD, or even Halo. That is what I and @Daniel are arguing.
Also Nintendo was successful in spite of having the vast majority of big third-party titles skipping its platform well before Switch existed; the Wii was the best-selling console of its generation and it certainly wasn’t the hybrid you’re implying. The SNES had plenty of titles that only shipped on Genesis and again, it sold more than enough and was massively successful on all fronts.
MS has to make an offer as soon as A/B deal is closed
I’m not a fan of JRPG’s either but the sales figures in Japan (one of the biggest markets) are frankly quite embarrassing, it’s being outsold 6:1 by the PS5.
If Xbox can get some of the biggest JRPG’s on Xbox the rest of the content will follow, they should also do a marketing deal with something like Dead or Alive 7.
I would add Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, Kingdom Hearts and (going forward) the Souls franchise too
Blimey! I knew DoA was popular in Japan but not that popular
Not Dragon Quest. It sells a couple million in Japan/Asia but worldwide it struggles.
Souls games or at least Elden Ring should count though.
Back then. It’s fallen off now though and DOA6 was a disappointment.
They should grab Netherealm.
NR and Rocksteady are the biggest gets but i think MS needs to get all of WBG since TT could help Beenox and Toys for Bob while Monolith makes a new F.E.A.R game and Avalanche works on a new IP(since WB has already lost the LOTR IP)
Yeah just looked it up, you’re right. I remember it use to be massive. To date it’s still Square’s second highest grossing franchise (behind Final Fantasy).
Even if they dont come with the licenses for popular ips, I still think it is worth it for ms, they will get some amazing studios that can work on old ips or create their own
It’s important to have all games and support, but the numbers don’t lie, Japan was not even 5% of the Xbox sales even at 360, the current moves are catered more towards the worldwide release than a japanese focused one, just like PC versions.
Yup, weird fact about OG Xbox, most of the units were sold on the first year or two in the market, but it wasn’t uncommon for games to be at the top 20 weekly. 5pb president said once the reason why the company was so invested on the Xbox 360 was because it had a installed fanbase that was worth it.
DOA 4 was also had the highest paid tournaments on eSports back in the day and most pro players were girls.
Lord of the Rings film rights back on the market for around $2 billion (winteriscoming.net)
Well if MS wants to grab something before of making an offer to WB this is the chance
Kinda seems like a weird deal, I think it’s very specifically Lord of the Rings and not the expanded media so you’re pretty much stuck remaking lord of the rings or telling a story directly attached to lord of the rings that doesn’t infringe on anything from the expanded writings.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t there some epilogue in the books that happen after they destroy the ring that isn’t in the movie? And from what I understand Peter Jackson left out many beloved characters that didn’t make it in the final script, including a character that actually touches the ring besides Frodo and Gollum called Tom Babadil. I think you could easily remake these movies again with modern VFX and putting in storylines that Peter for whatever reason left out. Trying to go back and watch the original movies is kind of tough, it’s really dated now.
Definitely and getting the future Wizarding World games on Game Pass would be huge too.
Even better would be if MS goes after the whole Discovery Warner company. There is just so much potential with DC characters, not just the famous ones like Flash, getting his own open world game, but even lesser known ones like Static or Icon. This would be great too, because finally we will see black superheroes getting their do justice.
I could see xbox getting Perona & maybe final fantasy 7 & FF14 but the rest I am doubtful of unless Microsoft acquires someone notable which will grow them in Japan. I am not going to say who is the best choice in general is because that is really up for debate. However, if Microsoft wants to buy someone who could bridge this gap, the best choice is probably Square since they they own dragon quest and a new dragon quest game releasing is like a holiday in Japan but that is if that is their sole/main concern. Both SEGA and Capcom also have positives too, I think picking up platinum is something Microsoft should do regardless, I get they can be hit or miss but in their current state they would be relivitely cheap and they could easily fit the fold working on something like a new protype or if we assume Microsoft is going to acquire either SEGA or Square then we have nier and a list of games from SEGA which they could work on (madworld and bayonetta being the obvious ones).
They don’t even need to go massive though but I think they at minimum need to get someone decently notable, if they don’t want to jump all in with Japan with a bigger Publisher there, honestly picking Koei Tecmo along side some smaller studios (Platinum, cyberconnect2 and Infinite Fall being great choices in my opinion) would also be a smart play, if Microsoft is hesitant to go all in with Japan though I think acquiring Capcom or SEGA would be the smartest play as capcom franchises are normally popular worldwide while SEGA owns some franchises which are popular worldwide (sonic being the obvious example) but I feel like their more niche franchises in the west could easily be grown in the west with the right marketing. This is unlike Square for example, it would be much harder to sell it to the largest gaming community in the west on their JRPG line up granted far from impossible.
I think this is a bit unfair of a comparision, Nintendo consoles sell solely for their exclusives most of the time, like who in their right mind bought the switch for boardlands or bioshock, I don’t know if xbox even after activision has that kind of line up, xbox and PS are very unlike the nintendo console though as they are primarily 3rd party mechines while nintendo is a nintendo mechine since nintendo owns some of the most iconic, important and value IPs in gaming and their consoles usually have a gimmick which sells them (and even then, its shown to blow up in their face some times, look at the Wii U or hell the 3DS’s original sales (the 3DS had a price drop within 6ish months) of proof of this)
If Microsoft try’s to get studios from WB games I think Neather realm and Monolith Productions are easily the best gets since they own IPs but if Microsoft wants to invest in talent TT games, rocksteady and Avalanche Software are also great pick ups IMO
This image shows why Microsoft has to buy Square Enix.
