Well they certainly have to be more careful. It is going to be really interesting to see how they react. I think Grubb is making a very good point. The best thing they could do is act quick and allow Game Pass on their platform.
Otherwise, they will just slowly bleed users. Especially with the Series S being out there in larger quantities than XSX or PS5. Then when MS push the button to close the Activision/Blizzard deal and all new CoDs are exclusive…
Aint no company this size that is clean. MS included
You have to remember Bobby Kotick was CEO of Activision for almost 3 decades iirc and got the company to record profits and made shareholders lots of money. This guy was therefore unchallenged and unchecked for a long time. Only the last couple of years there were some cracks forming in the building and some pushback from the board.
Jeff Grubb has said that he saw the maths that MS were doing around Bethesda exclusivity. How much money we lose vs how much we can gain long term if we make them exclusive. Then Game Pass on PS really wasnt viable.
That is different now. This deal is big enough that Sony may have to at least entertain the possibility of GP on Playstation.
I don’t think it’s that much better financially in the long run. Especially if Microsoft isn’t getting a cut of the microtransactions of 3rd Party games or a reduced cut on first party games.
Sony is trying to get their own service running. They clearly have every reason not to do that.
Yesterday: Microsoft made the biggest deal in their history for their Xbox gaming division.
Today: Xboxera wonders what could be the death sentence for Xbox.
Sure they will all be available on a PC soon enough.
Quote from the man himself “We have no plans to bring it to any other kind of closed platforms right now, mainly because those closed platforms don’t want something like Game Pass”
If Sony were open to it Phil would jump on it, if he didnt Satya and the shareholders would be asking questions.
Think about it though, they can offer a different model there. Maybe no perks, streaming etc to make the Xbox one seem better. Or Play it first on Xbox. Then push for Sony TVs to come with an Xbox GO client installed.
I hope that we can have a competitive healthy gaming market, I don’t wanna see some one sided Xbox dominating PS sales 4 to 1 sort of deal. The race for your dollar is better when the competition is tight.
Do we really need to go through this again? There’s a thread specifically aimed around this discussion, for starters. More importantly though, we already have our answer on things will play out with the template the Bethesda deal laid for us. You don’t spend X billion to keep it the same, we said it ad nauseam last year and saw how it’s not the same with Bethesda following the closure of the deal.
