They could always do this :joy:

I think with more publishers under the hood Xbox would have more “concentrated” events, spread across multiple events. As various studios won’t need to show “something” and it would relieve some pressure.

Or just a single event for 5 hours :joy:

Xbox barely does events outside of the traditional E3 show and XO which is one of our complaints as to how they handle their upcoming games.

They are heavily dependent on industry events.

This upcoming Gamescom conference is a sign on the right direction, they already have more content than competitors, if they will buy another publisher they will be forced to make new events outside the usual suspects.

I hope so irrrlevant of another publisher.

This is one area xbox lags behinds.

They could be better, but this yeas SoP and Directs showed that content is king, they were bad because of light content, like Inside Xbox were bad for the same reasons.

Don’t see Xbox acquiring another publisher so future naming conventions won’t be an issue imo.

Cdpr not worth it, when rherecare actual publishers with a higher yearly content output of double and triple a games.

I said for example, I’m not saying I want or think Xbox to pick them up.

If they acquired more publishers they would be fine event wise. as they currently have XO, E3 and Gamescom where they typically do a showcase of some kind. That could easily spread things out and be fine. Thats not even counting your outlier events scattered out like id@xbox showcase, quakecon, minecon, gameawards, etc.

However, if you acquire a publisher like sega, take 2. they never really had an event showcase most years. They just kind of tagged along with xbox and/or sony.

Maybe the dream of no-CGI will be achieved

Why Microsoft's next big Xbox acquisition should be in the mobile game space | Windows Central Jez made some great points in this article

You mean like Returnal??? lol

Nioh disagrees.

I hope so. WB Games baby!!! Let’s go!!! :joy:

1: Screen size has been stable for the last few years, if not decreased. Foldable phones are still a niche market, and I am wondering if the average user wants to have bigger phones. In fact, I’m expecting foldable phones to make them… smaller… as in the galaxy flip (not the galaxy fold).

2: Mobile gaming is (creatively) stuck on free to play games (“puzzle games”) because of a lack of visibility for premium games. F2P are so popular that users struggle to find alternatives. Game pass-like services (apple arcade and google play pass) can be a channel for premium mobile games to get an audience.

We know it is possible to create rich experiences on mobile phones (fortnite, genshin impact, lol wild rift, pokemon unite, fire emblem heroes, …), but how big could a mobile game be if they do not need to be stuck to free to play mechanics?

3: Text and UI are two examples of user friction… but these are not the only ones. Jez also mentions game loop is notably different on consola games vs. mobile games. Console games usually do not expect users to play for short periods of time ( 15 minutes ), and these games are designed around that. An exception is Minecraft Dungeons, which has a much shorter game loop and it makes sense as a mobile experience.

It is not just text and ui, but game design is significantly different on both console and mobile.

4: The experience of designing (game loop) mobile games is also valuable.

5: Jez’s intention was to describe the user friction of the game pass experience on mobile. If MFST wants to succed on xCloud for mobile, they will need to tackle these issues. Otherwise, it will be a niche market or simply a side-product for the people already invested in console gaming.

6: I don’t think cost is a problem for microsoft. But I agree with you that most likely MSFT will not get into this stuff for the IP, they will look for the experience and knowledge on creating mobile games to work on existing IP owned by microsoft. It would be definitely cheaper than paying TiMi Studios (tencent)

The problem that I have with with this is the “next” acquisition part.
Xbox still needs a greater presence in Japan, still needs greater presence in E-rated games and still needs more studios, so they can pump games continually while still giving enough time of development to other studios. I think that putting priority on mobile right now or calling priority on it isn’t really the right direction.
At least not yet, the time will come where they can comfortably expand more in these markets.

Correct although I think 1-2 mobile studios is fine if you want to make high quality versions of native games but as you say the main xbox library still has some gaps that can be filled beforehand.

They have Alpha Dogs already, so there’s one at least. Still I think we have bigger priorities for Xbox right now.

isn’t the Alpha Dog team like 10/15 people?

their past games are not even on the play store anymore (or at least i can’t find them)

Sega. Let’s do it :fire:

are we allowed to talk about IP acquisitions here? If so I wonder if Microsoft can get Obsidian the Alpha Protocol IP. I know it didn’t score that well, but the concept of it was pretty cool
