The only company that comes to mind is Ubisoft, which absolutely bought up companies during that period with the intent of putting them on other projects because they couldn’t hire fast enough to meet all their requirements.

These days I could imagine Rockstar or Activision doing that too, but pre-2018, Ubi was the main company hiring on such a vast scale because they were insourcing, rather than outsourcing. There is a ubi-obsidian connection because they worked together on that southpark game too.

But aren’t most of the Ubisoft support studios from countries with cheap labour? I would even throw Zenimax and maybe EA in the ring. But I think we can all agree, that it was the best outcome that Microsoft got them.

Same boat, I literally made the joke of “It’s organic growth if the console I like is doing it” and got 3 fucking weeks for that. But I’m done there. It’s awful. Fuck it. I like 90% of this place a whole lot (just some small complaints about how how blocking people works), so I’ll just stay here. Never should have left, really.

It’s just good to have you back

I was banned over two years ago now for challenging a certain duck-mod with facts

Ubisoft has a huge presence in cheap locations (whether because it’s a country with low wages or because it’s got lots of tax breaks like in parts of Canada), but not exclusively.

To give you a concrete example of what I’m talking about, Ubisoft acquired “Related Designs” in Germany in 2013, tasked them with supporting BlueByte, then in 2014 merged them into BlueByte.

Another example is when they purchased THQ Montreal during the THQ bankruptcy proceedings in 2013. They immediately merged them into Ubisoft Montreal.

Another example is when FreeStyle Games got acquired by Ubisoft in 2017, then were immediately rebranded as “Ubisoft Leamington” (oh hi playground) and now exist as one the many, many studios and micro-studios that Ubisoft maintains globally that work on the central pool of games.

I think IF GSC Game World ever decides to allow it self to be purchased, whoever misses out on them will be kicking their teeth for years to come.

Interesting. Did not know about Ubisoft’s acqui-hire strategy.

Famously, even EA said that they needed talent and not necessarily IP when bidding for wbgames last year.

The people who split up from GSC - i.e., 4A were acquired by Saber Interactive (under Embracer). They had moved their HQ to Malta from Ukraine for easier operations with Europe. This allowed for easy acquisition also.

Not sure about GSC. They are still in Ukraine.

have always talked about diversification; I would not be surprised if they tried to collaborate-acquire

farming simulator dev euro truck simulator dev train sim world dev rockband dev x-plane dev (in case they don’t succeed with asobo). sega / (or parodax in case they fail to get sega). valve (when gabe will retire in many years).

But don’t they have less than 10 employees?

Could be. Let’s wait and see how Stalker 2 turns out, though.

It would be really nice to have Microsoft Truck Simulator and Microsoft Train Simulator that are based on Microsoft Flight Simulator engine and share the same world.

Did you bring anybody else?

Flight Simulator technology won’t work out too great for the level of detail you’d need at street level.
