Following this line of thought: “Xbox is not going to acquire Bethesda. They have never bought a publisher before.”
Phil clearly stated that he wants Japanese and E rated content. IMO a Japanese studio acquisition is only a matter of time.

This was also prior to companies like sega literally doing a reorganization that would make it appealing to acquire the gaming division and not effect the rest of the company.
That’s a fairly PR-safe answer by Phil. As Nintendo also had no plans to release any new switch hardware 5 months ago and yet magically we have an OLED switch which based on prior comments from Nintendo would mean the oled switch: researched, built, and put into production all in less than five months while in pandemic conditions and work from home.
Phil literally stated that they are looking to acquire studios outside the west a few days ago mate.
???. Me being pessimistic that they will acquire Japanese studios or parts of bigger companies like WB or Avalnche is trolling? I am very vocal that Microsoft is going to be buying game studios (I hope its valve, and indie studios). Not sure why you think I am trolling other than I go against the opinion of some of the people here.
I think now I know how @Hindle feels likes.
Ninja Theory Compulsion games Double Fine and Inxile were not rumored and still got bought plus Jez Rand and Gaint Bomb hear rumors in 2018 MS was looking to buy Capcom so this point is not valid
Like @Failwood said, Phil literally said very recently they want to acquire studios globally, like India, South America, and Africa too. Again, they want Game Pass to be global, and you can’t do that if you only acquire in western locations alone. You have to make local contents, and a way to do that is acquiring on the targeted location.
But what does Phil Spencer the nerd know about what Microsoft wants? He is only * checks notes * Head of Xbox!?
Yeah, he is also a fraud.
Only talk no action!
The people that say shit like this, are the people that cry the loudest after the next acquisition gets announced.
People on twitter and some other forums are weirdly adamant about Phil being a liar.
This is no rocket science, you want Japanese content you own, you buy japanese creators. The same applies everywhere. Acquisitions is probably the hardest topic for any insiders out there to know about, because this is the type of stuff that only highly-positioned people know in a company. So the most you get is hearing about some of the talks ( not all ), but you don’t know anything about how they are going.
IIRC Phil said at the round table that he wants to get in contact with Tango Gameworks asap.
He is clearly happy that they have at least one studio there, but I’m sure he would like to add, some influence and content from Japan.
I mean, I spoke about it on the podcast after that episode with Colt.
I said this is the time of year acquisitions happen. It’s the End of/Start of Financial year. It wasn’t anything super shocking or secretive.
I think it became something simply because of the thirst for MS to acquire someone.
I’m waiting the beginning of next month to hear about their strategy for the next fiscal year. It is always interesting to hear about that.
Yeah, that’s still a common theme on Resetera.
I also like “I’ve never liked the Zenimax games anyway” in the past decade that’s like 30 different games, in 10 different genres, from 8 different Studios lol.
If you watch Phil’s interview with Gamespot where he “denies” the rumor, what he says is more so along the lines that Xbox isn’t desperately handing out its business card on a street corner in Japan. He never actually puts to bed the idea of Xbox looking for more partners over there.
At 20:30… “not from me,” “I don’t think, “I’m not in every meeting,” etc. The Bloomberg article did make Xbox sound like they were throwing anything at the wall to see what sticks. I think that’s the issue Phil took with the piece. Also, this was 8 months ago.
So Microsoft is sitting out acquisition season.
Got ya.
Footage from Phil Spencer on a corner in Shibuya.
Not even bowing.
Everybody knows you bow when you present your business card in Japan.
Amature hour over there I tell ya hwhat.
Yeah, an acquisition in Japan would pretty sure come without any signs beforehand.
I have a hard time thinking of studios I would like. That doesn’t mean I don’t like japanese games, but the ones I do like mostly come from the big publishers there.
For me it would come down to Cyberconnect2 and Platinum Games.
Oh and Capcom>Sega it needed to be said.
Don’t @ me
