Of course, but the reason why a 7.5bi purchase was greenlit in the first place is because the growth rate is already being much bigger than expected.
So they know the potential and now may enter in a “secure leadership” mode where they throw money to keep anyone from joining and taking their pie.
For example, for a completely hypothetical scenario. Imagine it was feasible for them to own Capcom, Square, Sega, Paradox, and Warner + their IP.
It would certainly cost a lot of money, but would give them a very strong position within all regions (US, Europe and Asia) + a tremendous strong footing in the PC arena. To the point it would be worth it because they know the money would come after they dominate the market
Last I checked, Creative Assembly put out one of the best console games of last generation (Alien: Isolation) and Relic the other team at CA made Halo Wars 2, a stellar console title. I think people should stop limiting what these developers can do and would do given the opportunity, especially when their own history negates the “only PC” narrative that I’m seeing from some. Same goes for Paradox.
We’re at a point where we should be judging what a studio is capable of based off of talent, creativity, resources, and most importantly potential. Nowadays a developer can make any type of game they want to.
Thanks for saying something, sometimes I myself forget just because a studio is established in a genre doesn’t mean that’s all they can do.
Just look at Creative Assembly, Guerilla, Playground (fingers crossed), and Obsidian.
Honestly I could kinda see an EA acquisition make sense, it would give them the marketing rights to all of the sports games which would be a huge deal, and of course there are all the non sport franchises that are big too. because of licensing they would have to keep all the sports games as they are of course, but thats fine. You could just get in game stuff if you were on gamepass or something. I do think they would keep the majority of the non sports titles multiplat as well.
The reason I think it might be a good idea is because it would increase revenue a decent amount, and would get them a bunch of day 1 sports titles
Thoughts on Bluepoint? I mean, they are super close to Sony and do great work, I just find it weird they haven’t tied the knot. That could easily be because they want to stay independent which totally makes sense. However, with all the smoke on the acquisition of them going to Sony seemingly disappearing, I wonder if MS made an offer.
They are based in Austin which currently has offices for ZOS, BGS and Arkane, and is close to Id. They also did MGS HD and Titanfall for the Xbox 360.
Sony buying Bluepoint makes zero sense. They already are doing the remasters on a contract. Sony does not gain anything new.
And
MS buying Bluepoint makes zero sense. They have not done an original IP - which takes way more effort. Just ask Miyazaki whose games these ppl are remastering.
I think few years ago Klobrille or someone else teased that a developer who is close to Sony is in discussing of being acquired and it was probably Bluepoint. Looks like the MS X Bluepoint deal is off the table and by the newest rumours from few month suggest that Bluepoint will be a Sony studio.
While that does fit a lot of the criteria imo, the issue is that Klobrille was surprised by the announcement of Double Fine at E3 2019, he was actually expecting Hello Games to be announced.
Are either of those the studio he was hinting at? Idk.
This was after E3 2018 he teased it. Ninja Theory was already part of Xbox Game Studios.
Creative Assembly made Halo Wars 2 as well (same team as Alien: Isolation), not Relic, but yeah, I agree with what you said. Sports Interactive has also started to bring Football Manager to Xbox as we’ve seen recently and Two Point Studios brought Two Point Hospital over to consoles. Perhaps Xbox could also assist the teams in Xbox ports if there ever is an acquisition. I’d really like to see Total War on consoles some day.
Do you think Xbox is going to acquire any Japanese studio? We know from the Bloomberg article, that turned out to be true, that they are seeking to acquire companies in Japan. So far news hasn’t been reassuring as games are still skipping xbox. I thought they would buy a publisher but now I am thinking smaller studios.
