Xbox Acquisition |OT| - So We’re Back to Making Lists, Huh?

Don’t you think you’re acting, oh, a wee bit alarmist?

“Closing down shops”… “Pissing off an entire country”… Dude. No. Stop.

Why would people lose their jobs over this? Sega makes a lot more money outside of Japan. Console also isn’t the strategy out East.

Playstation is not that popular brand anymore in Japan. The main consoles there are Iphone, Nintendo and PC. In fact Playstation there is akin Xbox in heavily Playstation dominated european regions. Just replace Xbox with Playstation ,and Nintendo with Playstation in Japan.

Hmmmm ok

First, I don’t understand why you put Nintendo and Sony in the same case. The mobile gaming is the main form of gaming for Japan by a large margin, and the second gaming platform is Nintendo Switch, which is absolutely close to any console. Switch outsell PS4 in Japan in 2 years and already destroy PS5 in Japan.

These store are still going to exist because they sell a lot of switch game, and Persona and Yakuza aren’t on switch but these store still exist. PS is also going to have a lot of japanese exclusive by small devs so store can still sell Kiseki, Final Fantasy, Monster Hunter… Are you telling me japanese store will close because Persona is not on PS anymore ? Is it serious ?

If Microsoft release Persona on Switch but not on PS, it will be a blessing for this japanese store.

Look : Nintendo have 87% of console market in Japan, it’s absolutely not comparable with any other console maker market share in Japan. Nintendo Switch Took 87% Of Japan’s Console Market in 2020 - Nintendo Life

Switch is the only console japanese gamers care about and it’s a fact. If 2 PS exclusive game leave PS ecosystem, nobody is going to care and no shop is going to get close

Valkyria Chronicles used to be on Xbox Game Pass for PC. Not anymore though, unfortunately.

why this thread acting that sega will be sold ? they are not for sale right now at least not for price owners want, let’s say they are in really bad situation then first thing they will do looking for partnership and companies like Tencent would love to do these deals

I don’t think a single person this entire discussion (over the last 24 hours) has stated that Microsoft will buy SEGA, just that they’re an obvious pick if given as an option.

If Microsoft bought Sega today and Persona 6 launched tomorrow on Gamepass thats effectively 20 million free to access copies for current subscribers. Why should Microsoft care about grabbing the 2 million people on PS4 who bought Persona 5?

I am pretty sure that unless Sega find big success it will be acquired. For now it won’t happen due to some additional ties in other industries, but in time - it might be.

an obvious pick for this community but is it obvious pick for MS ?

i mean i kind get it why sega but if the reasoning buying sega for pc market then they should get Paradox Interactive instead it’s cheaper and safer

What’s going on with all this concern trolling? Jesus. “Stores are going to shut down and people will lose their jobs” is some of the worst hyperbole I’ve seen on here.

Its more than just the PC market (just look at their IP, plus Sonic is a multimedia IP).

I’m done talking about this though. Some of us got a little too heated over a simple discussion. lol

I’d suggest that the ethnocentrism regarding Japanese people, its economics, and assumptions about dealings with foreign nations be dropped. I’ve lived there and shared a home with several of my Japanese friends, and studied their culture as an anthropologist, and the last thing I would do is pretend to understand the intricacies of their culture, especially down to the inner workings of translating that to the business world. Moreover, I certainly wouldn’t be making generalizations that are borderline ethnocentric and ignore a history of post-Reconstruction business dealings, partnerships, and mergers with Western companies. The M&A amendments that some seem to keep referring to as a blanket for why “mergers don’t happen with American companies” is not only historical revisionism, but ignorant to the fact that many of the statutes in the amendment are directly to prevent Chinese/CCP-backed companies to influence the Japanese economy.

Finally, I’m noticing several users point to an individual that I think is clearly falling under the category of ‘concern-trolling’. There’s nothing wrong with differing opinions, but there are such things as objective fact and when a group of people are providing evidence to suggest that the point being made is false, and the original false point is continued ad nauseam to the detriment of the thread it’s a problem. I’m providing a public warning and will do a better job for the community and this thread going forward.

What are the thoughts around Sumo Digital

I personally think they’re a studio with a lot of talent, but really lean on working on everyone else’s IPs rather than their own (with rare exception).

If Xbox is looking for a team with important IP, they should look elsewhere. If they’re looking for sheer manpower and to increase release cadence, Sumo wouldn’t be a bad pick.

My only thought is, eventually Microsoft may have to be more selective on who they grab if they start getting close to Embracer numbers, which would make me personally think they’d keep Sumo as 2nd party. I could be wrong though.

Good pick!
