Xbox Acquisition |OT| - So We’re Back to Making Lists, Huh?

I’m a 3D artist (intermediate) and I can tell you with good confidence cinematics asset pipeline is a bit different from game art pipelines as the goals are different. As a result, models made for cinematics are not optimized for game engines . They even fundamentally vary in the very topology you build as the kind of articulations and limits in character models are different, games are aiming for more performance and as a result have lesser complexity, whereas cinematics are meant to represent the best possible, highest fidelity articulations. This is exactly why video game cut scenes have still not caught up to Blizzard or Blur cinematics from a decade ago. Even though Blizzard makes both games and cinematics, the models aren’t entirely interchangeable.

However, I see character models becoming more complex and having more control and maximal fidelity eventually matching the quality you see in cinematics and vfx, made evident by trailers like Hellblade 2.

I mean it depends if they can get them for a reasonable price. Bloober would probably be a Compulsion situation where the devs have creative and original ideas but their games have jank, technical issues etc. I know that the Medium has like a 7 million dollar budget. I imagine the game would end up being A LOT better if MS gave them 3-4x that amount.

All the more reason to put their team to work on actual game assets and animations. Gotta say, the more I think on it, there is some sense to this! Interesting idea @nrXic!

With UE5, they can be though.

And SSD tech. To be able to load up a 160MB animation for a character in 2 frames in a 60fps game was previously unheard of. A cutscene can now go through a GB worth of animations if it’s there.

And that’s what I mean Ruthwick, game dev is changing to the point where movie quality assets (including animations) can be put into games.

But I don’t mean to derail this thread so I suppose a new thread could be made on this topic, sorry about that.

Anims can also be implemented via ML too.

Yes 100%. They did such a great job on Halo 2 Anniversary and Halo Wars 2. They also made the Fable and State of Decay 3 trailers iirc.

And make Halo 3 Anniversary with XSX graphics.

I kinda get why people would want Blur. But they aren’t a game dev. They are purely a VFX house and work on VFX a lot of feature films and commercials now alongside doing CGI cutscenes for games. They did the Sonic The Hedgehog movie that released this year, for example. They wouldn’t be a good fit for XGS at all but I get the intent.

So after playing the hell out of Spiritfarer, and watching my wife completely replace Animal Crossing with it, I’d like to throw in Thunder Lotus Games into the wish list for acquisitions. They and DONTNOD have just been getting better over the years and Spiritfarer is such a beautiful, unique game that I want to make sure these gents and ladies don’t have to shop their next title or worry about keeping the doors open.

It still kills me that Bungie ditched the original voice actor for Truth. :*(

I don’t think anyone suggested they would make games so much as help develop asset pipelines and produce assets themselves. They are insanely talented, far more than ppl realize imo. They didn’t do a single frame of performance capture for anything in these H2A cutscenes, but every damn syllable is matched so convincingly that it leaps over the uncanny valley. Doing that without high end performance capture is almost unimaginable. Even their animations on the aliens are some how perfect, and that shouldn’t even make sense! lol

DONTNOD is a no brainer get. They are really talented. They could bring their narrative talent to XGS. I really liked their output and especially Vampyr, a true gem.

Germanys government don’t know shit about IT or digital content. Suddenly they release germany need better IT infrastructure. The internet is from the stone age. No one wants to work for the German IT department because the payment is bad.

This move is is an attempt to boost the interest. I hope it works out. Caveman politicians.

When it comes to Europe, I want them to invest in France, Sweden and Poland.

I think France is the best european country (behind England) in term of studios, we got : Dontnod, Asobo, Arkane, Motion Twin (Dead Cells), Dotemu (SOR4), Quantic Dream, Ubisoft Montpellier (Rayman/BGE 2). Microsoft really should invest in

You have repeated your dislike for Remedy over and over. Quit hating. I love their games and a lot of others here do too and I personally think Sam Lake is the most interesting high profile creative in the medium. No need to go so negative. It ruins the fun for others.
