MS are buying CDPR guys. As I said you heard it here first
MS just better not Sony Google or Amazon get Capcom
I’ve noticed whenever acquisitions are brought up in gaming circles elsewhere, there’s always a very vocal group who decry the discussion, get very concerned about the industry etc., and jump on anyone trying to discuss the possibilities with an open mind. It’s so bizarre, it’s like they don’t realize it doesn’t matter what they want, it doesn’t matter what any of us want, any acquisitions are going to go through regardless of what anyone thinks about it.
They seem to think if they just keep everyone saying acquisitions are terrible and they would prefer all the companies to stay independent that everything will stay the same. Change is inevitable, this industry is constricting, and companies will be acquired. There’s nothing wrong with accepting that, and hoping that Microsoft is the one who picks up the most as they currently have the best ecosystem and plan for access for the most gamers.
This. It’s going to happen anyway.
Just look at Codemasters selling for $1.2 billion and the surge of gaming in 2020 + the cloud war and the content war that are incoming. Other companies will want to sell too.
10 years ago Cd Projekt Red was not the huge monster they are today, neither was FromSoftware, THQ Nordic, Epic Games and Gearbox weren’t publishers yet, etc… if a bunch of today’s current independent studios and publishers get bought, then a new crop will rise up. There will always be some. I don’t get too worked up about it.
Exactly. Look at the indy scene right now, it’s thriving, there’s so many talented developers making incredible games now, there’s really no point with some people being so concerned about companies being acquired.
The question is, despite the success of Witcher 1-3, would anyone WANT CDPR right now?
They’re so toxic, I feel like anybody picking them up would be seen as a negative against the buyer and not CDPR.
Yeah, I’m sure many of these companies would love to have CDPR. People are fickle, they may be complaining about CDPR and cyberpunk right now, but once it’s patched and supported, they’ll move past its rocky launch. Heck, it’s sold great so far and it’s still in the lists of most played games. This is just a temporary embarrassment for CDPR, they’ll be fine.
Yea most likely
So quick question, if MS were to buy a public company how does that work. I know it’s a lot more difficult buying a public company. Would they need to announce they’re in talks with the company, meaning the other companies can come sniff around then start a bidding war? Is MS allowed to talk about a possible deal behind the scenes before they come out and say it? Shit is going to get nuts soon it seems.
Another thing I haven’t seen much about is things like WB games, couldn’t MS do side deal with AT&T and make them the official partner of Game Pass streaming or something like that. Give AT&T discounted Surface products, teams/365 or something to do with Azure, or does it strictly have to be a cash payout.
From what I understand, when you buy a public company you I think, buy up all the stock and shit. But because it’s public, somebody else can gate crash the party and offer more. Which is happened with EA and Codemasters.
Basically, if it’s private, there’s usually very little chance that another company can come in and screw it up.
When it’s public, it requires exchanges of stocks and stuff, and another company can be like “LOL NOPE”.
I don’t think Microsoft buys public companies often because of how nasty the bidding can get.
Anything in addition to Bethesda is gravy.
Like when they were going to buy the U.S. Division of tiktok for 50 billion which i am glad they didn’t
Man what happened with that. It was like the biggest news story in the world, like the President was forcing TikTok to be sold, Microsoft was so gung-ho, lost to Oracle, and now we never hear anything about it again.
Like did that go through?
These talks that Brad Sams heard about are very likely been happening for several months, if not years now. Generally it is the timeframe where media outlets, insiders and journalists hear about that type of thing, but it has been well underway. So Xbox, more than anybody, knows the reality of the situation, and when Spencer talked about a future where they would always acquire somebody, he talked with that in mind.
That’s why, they won’t just stop acquisition, waiting for Amazon and Google to catch up.
I do like this aggressive Microsoft. A few years ago it felt like Microsoft would never aquire another studio again. The Xbox division has changed for the better so quickly.
yeah with Phil Spencer gaining a seat at the Executive table and convincing Satya Nadella to go all in was a new lease on life for the Xbox Division.
They just need to focus more on partnering with more Asian studios and maybe even buying one. Microsoft’s getting a lot better about Japanese game support.
Yeah EA jumping in on Codemasters was actually funny to me, they’re like lol you think you had it,bye felicia. The reason why EA did a big move like that is because they have more racing IP + they seem to love sport types of IP and F1 rights is pretty big.
Surely all these companies have limits though, Google/Amazon/MS aren’t going in with a completely clear cheque book. I don’t think investors would like them spending shit tons of money in a short amount of time, I’m no stock broker/investor however.
My theory about this whole thing is MS/Satya has seen how many times they’ve failed in tech/services that end up being huge is so high. Satya/MS now see’s Xbox/gaming is another one of those failed attempts to get in the industry before it takes off fully. Just look at Zune, Windows Phone and Mixer for example. Xbox has been their best consumer facing product for a long time but the company didn’t see it because it’s “gaming” is for “kids,” which probably they still thought for a long time.
Gaming is bigger than Movies/TV/music, they are the 3rd best company in that industry and that is with fuck all funding. They want to push to number 1 now and they need studios to do that.
We should all be thankful for Phil and his team so much, he managed to turn the mindset of gaming around to MS and Satya (I think he did it by using Azure & services) if he didn’t turn around their mindset Xbox could’ve easily been sold off. I know people hate when others praise him and all that but him and his team saved Xbox for sure.
Xbox isn’t done buying studios, this is just the start. Some could say they awoke the giant ![]()
