And here I thought that Take Two Interactive had already acquired them.
EA was like “lmao SIKE”
I think it would be better if Codemasters were to be acquired by EA than 2K. That would mean that future Codemasters games (Dirt, F1) will all come to Game Pass eventually, with a 10-hour trial on release date.
I don’t know anything about how corporate purchases work. Since remedy is public what would need to happen for them to be acquired by msoft
EA is the greater evil. They’ll turn Codemasters into another NFS studio and then gut them in a decade or so.
Respawn has been amazing under EA.
In theory, you would just need to buy a majority of the shares on the public market. The problem is, even if you purchased them there nothing keeping the people there, and for a studio you want for their talent, not just their IP, you don’t want to spook them all and piss them off, it just makes your purchase worthless if everyone quits. That’s why Microsoft if just buying companies who want to be purchased, and not swooping in and yelling surprise your first-party now.
In development? Sure. But what has this to do with the end product? In the end the quality matters the most, no matter what angle.
I feel like you’re all just glossing over this huge news that was just broke in this topic… there’s some kind of “positive gang” we can join? Where do we sign up?
That’s because EA hasn’t assigned them to NFS
Franchise is cursed
I want to say first that this is a good post
Second I want to say I agree with Marduk. I don’t understand all of the negativity towards what is a completely valid point?
You can’t call\aim Game Pass to be the Netflix of gaming if you aren’t sufficiently encompassing every category, specifically the most lauded one, and no, Gears, Hellblade & Psychonauts (really?) do not even remotely compare with Sony’s output (Last of Us, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima, Uncharted, Spiderman, Bloodborne, Death Stranding, do I need to go on?) and before some of you try to discount those games, all of them are VGA nominees (2 are winners), 6 of the last 7 winners were 3P, and in that time (2014+) ZERO MS studio games. If Phil’s plan is really to emphasize\focus on games that are not 3P, then it is an incredibly short-sided one.
There is clearly a void here, and when I read people complaining about the Sony vs MS narrative from the VG press (in particular)\general public, this is precisely where it is coming from. It is about the games, that is what it has always been about, and Sony is winning that battle hands down. All of the great things that MS is doing: consoles, Game Pass, XCloud, acquisition of studios, is getting lost to this one overriding narrative: MS gives gamers a wide array of games to play, Sony is where the best games of each console generation can be found.
I like Game Pass, it has gotten me to explore some games I never would have purchased and absolutely enjoyed (Slay the Spire, Children of Morta, Hellblade) and the amount\variety of games is great for us as gamers, but MS needs to address the 3P narrative games better than they have been and they need to start putting out VGA level of games (acquiring Bethesda is a start) if they truly want to stand out versus Sony. People brushing aside 3P games as not necessary for MS, is just not accepting reality IMO.
Make no mistake Sony is not stupid, they may bluster in public, but they see the value\strength of Game Pass and I am sure they are working on their own version. I am sure they would like nothing better than to come out with something similar and then run with the narrative of “The variety of Game Pass, but with the best\award winning titles in the industry” and who can say they would be wrong?
BTW, I was surprised that Perfect Dark is not a 3P game, given that they have a lot of talent that comes from those sorts of games, and I guess nothing is completely? set in stone yet, however even though I am not a huge fan of 1st person games per se, I look forward to playing it (same with Avowed, hope for 3P option?). I don’t mind shooters as 1P, never have liked 1P melee focused games.
Sorry for the long post, and I get it, no one likes to read people harping over the same point over and over again, however that doesn’t mean that their point isn’t 100% valid and worth and open minded discussion. There is room for that, in the end we all are gaming fans.
I never said it had anything to do with game quality. Just game design, animations, etc. There’s plenty of first person games that are total shit and plenty that are great. Same for third person, 2D or any camera perspective. Camera perspective has nothing to do with the quality of the game.
I think you’re too much focus on the past, MS now have 23 studios, they’re easily going to have at least 2 GOTY contender years after years starting 2022. MS problem this generation was the quality of their game, and this problem is most important than camera angle of the game, MS game need to bee great, not 3rd person. DOOM Eternal is GOTY contender and is first person. When Sony is going to show their gamepass like, I hope they can follow Microsoft’s rythm of release and quality because it’s not magic, if you want good game you need studios with talented people, time and money. MS now have all and they have more talented dev, time and money than Sony.
At the end, what matter is only the quality of the game, not the last generation. When we are going to have Avowed, Hellblade 2, Stalker 2… day one in gamepass in 2022, I don’t think Sony can follow with their current studios
Very well said and I agree completely.
Some here act like those who prefer third person (like me) over first person only want Microsoft’s studios to develop third person games when in fact, we’re only looking for a few across different genres.
They have the first person RPG category filled with what will probably be 3 games so why not give us 3 third person RPG’s to even it out? They have a few first person shooters but only one third person shooter in Gears so again, why not even it out?
I’m hoping that Microsoft/Spencer/Booty decide to just keep things even and balanced in regards to first person/third person games while also releasing other genres like Gears Tactics and whatnot.
Just a reminder, despite some people will tell you, third person =/= automatic quality.
And this trend right now won’t be the trend forever.
Oh I completely agree they should be addressing that. I actually think Xbox has been slow to expand. I’d prefer to see them at 40 studios by the end of 2022, which is more than double their current pace of expansion. I think they have major 1st party gaps that they should fill asap including the 3rd person action adventure games. But I think it’s much more than just those style of games, I think they need to add Grade A quality studios to make Platformers, Party games, Rogue like, JRPG, Sandbox, Fighting, Simulator, choose your adventure story, horror and strategy.
At the same time, I’m still greatly excited by what they’ve done in adding Zenimax and the other studios the past couple years, but I’m not a sugar coat it kind of person so I’m right there with you in terms of thinking they aren’t aggressive enough.
I’d love to see an expansion between now and 2022 include acquistions of Sega/Atlus, Supergiant Games, Asobo, Moon Studios, Remedy Games, WB Games, Jackbox Games, People Can Fly, Playtonic, Playdead and Iron Galaxy. I think realistically that would set them up with where they need to be for a massively successful gamepass with 500+ million subscribers.
I think (and hope) they have 23+ studios and they are going to let them make what they want to make. If there are gaps then they can be fulfilled through some other route (like XGSP).
If you guys want GOTY quality games, its going to come from developers that are passionate about what they are making, not a check list.
Agree with this. Microsoft needs to release higher quality regardless of genre and perspective. People think they can snap their fingers and get an Uncharted or Last of Us when in reality they are going to get a Killzone or Resistance (in reference to Sony trying to answer Halo).
Microsoft’s studios definitely have to increase their quality level which if anything, is a given when looking over the last decade but I don’t see what that has to do with wanting a few third person action adventure games? What’s wrong with wanting both third person and first person?
What I dont get is the perception that xbox lacks third person games. Lets think about it.
- Compulsion Games is making a third person game
- Hellblade 2
- Project Mara
- Gears 6
- Fable
- Starfield
- probably Everwild
is this not enough for now ? Xbox is lacking a family friendly game. Stuff the dont resonate with many passion gamer, but the reality is this is what xbox is probably is looking for right now.
so again where exactly is xbox lacking third person?
