Will Bethesda Games be Xbox Console Exclusive?

Also :eyes:

I’m just guessing I don’t know

I pray you are wrong for the sake of this forum.

I pray that PsyDec is wrong for the sake of the Xbox brand and eco-system because if Microsoft screws this up, a lot of Xbox gamers will be very disappointed to where they lose confidence in the company, brand and leadership including myself.

People in here need a) more patience and b) more self-confidence! It all will play out just fine!

The long term answer is yes. But i think you will see a brief transition period.

Short term you will see things like content updates for Elder Scrolls Online, Fallout 76, and DLC like the Ancient Gods Pt 2 and the next gen update for Doom Eternal for other platforms. As well as honoring the Ghostwire and Deathloop deals.

Additionally you will see titles that may have been in the oven and planned for release this year, like the rumored Skyrim 10 year anniversary edition appear on all platforms. I think there is a some chance that something like Wolfenstein 3 could get a multiplatform release but I think that is a bit more up in the air than the aforementioned stuff.

I think all future titles will end up being exclusive. Including Elder scrolls, Starfield, etc. Basically if it is releasing beyond this year or is currently unannounced, it will be a Xbox game.

Interesting read. I would mostly agree (acquisitions are rather risky, and most likely overpriced), but I think the author failed to see this purchase from a game pass subscription model. Author is not sure if msft can make 500m usd/year from bethesda, but what msft is asking themselves is ‘Will this acquisition generate 4.2M long-term subscribers?’ (4.2M subs is aprox 500M usd). That number doesn’t look terrible. I also have my doubts about their comments on being cheaper to just buy content into game pass. As the number of subs grow, content acquisition will also be more expensive (msft need to cover potential sales lost, which will be higher if more subs are added). Internal teams making content will be way cheaper when they reach a certain amount of subs.

The article talks about recovering the cost. Not really looking at the long term investment for the platform growth.

If Microsoft just wanted to gain some profits via there investments in Zenimax - they could simply have partnered with Zenimax and become an investor in them.

  1. Ppl should stop whining about the whole ‘we deserve exclusives!’ crap. This deal has nothing to do with fanboy bickering on the internet.

  2. The reason MS can’t outright say stuff is exclusive or not prematurely is that have an improper impact on how the deal is finalized. That is only the case if such announcements would mean the status quo for Zenimax target platforms were changing. They would be welcome announcing that nothing changes other than the games all coming to GP…but that is not how things have gone. Instead, they said they must stay quiet. They were happy o announce publicly that the existing contracts with Sony were still gonna be honored. They can talk about that, but not about future plans…why? Because they are two very different things. Read between the lines.

  3. You don’t spend $7.5bil just to get the games day 1 on GP. That could happen with 1/20th of the cost.

  4. Phil has strongly hinted the games will be exclusive.

  5. MS/Xbox are in user acquisition phase for GP right now. Have been for past 3 yrs. That’s when they moved all 1P games to day 1 GP and when they started buying studios and when they started really pushing xCloud into gear and were really gearing up their next gen strategy.

  6. During the user acquisition phase they are willing to sacrifice almost anything to get GP subs. The ENTIRE argument from ppl arguing they won’t be exclusive is based on the assumption that MS cares more about software revenues than it does about GP subs. But Nadella’s bonus is not based on revenues, it is based on GP subs. If MS cares more about sw revenues, they would not be putting their 1P games into GP on day 1. They would not have GP at all, actually, since that loses them sw revenues.

  7. This is the most important point to make: Xbox is not a console. It’s a universe of GP devices. PC, xCloud, TV’s, streaming sticks, X1 consoles, XSS/XSX consoles, mobile phones, browsers…those are Xbox now. GP is the content they are selling access to. Not individual software sales. MS will throw $$$ away hand over fist to drive GP growth. They DO NOT CARE about lost PS5 sw revenues. They want those PS5 owners to instead play Bethesda games using their phones, browsers, PC’s, X1 console, XSX/XSS console, TV’s or their streaming stick. The whole point of having all these options is to lower the barrier of accessing GP. The point of buying Zenimax, Obsidian, etc was to build a library of exclusive experiences only available on Xbox, ‘the universe of GP devices’.

  8. The games will ALL be exclusive beyond Ghostwire Tokyo and Deathloop. They will provide ongoing updates to PS4 games tho, or Switch games if the title is already out on those platforms. I frankly doubt we will even see a next gen update for Doom outside of XSX.
