What should Rare do now - And should it be Sea of Thieves 2?

I’m not into Sea of Thieves but I would say that yes, Rare should start working on Sea of Thieves 2 for the next generation Xbox consoles.

Honestly, with the massive success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons they should’ve had a retooled Viva Pinata sequel with community aspects and house decoration ready by yesteryear lol.

I think they should look for ways to expand the game to mobile. Yes, a SOT 2 with a living world would be good where one can visit cities or crowded locations.

I’m not a fan of sea of thieves but if there’s a 2nd one I would want better solo play. The lack of options to have a good time in solo play made me not like the game much. I would like for a campaign if there’s a 2nd game

Viva piñata makes a lot of sense in today’s market. There’s a lot of farming simulators performing well and now would be a good time to release the game especially with the multi platform push

Selfishly would want them take another shot at kameo but I doubt it moves a lot of units

I don’t know how many people work at Rare, but Id like to see them get back to their roots and take on a more Obsidian like framework. Have a core team work on Sea of Thieves (or a sequel), break off other smaller teams to pursue more small/medium sized projects.

Sequels with these types of games is somewhat a hard thing to do. People become really invested and have skins and progress they don’t want to lose, and communities that are built that might not all want to move on either. It’s a very risky move to do in this day in age when you have a popular product and risk messing it all up with a sequel.

Maybe they’d find a way to release a sequel and have all of your progress follow and maybe something like a rebate if you owned the first game to facilitate that transition.

Ideally I think they should just add stuff on top of Sea of Thieves, maybe even try with paid expansions or follow the ESO model with paid or subscription based expansions where you get all the content if you subscribe? Add in game currency on top and that could get traction, bring in more revenue and this more investment in the game.

I played a lot of this game years ago, got pirate legend and even got some of my reps to Lvl 75 but at the end of the day after hundreds of hours it got repetitive for me and the seasonal grinding wasn’t enough to keep me hooked.

As for what Rare should do next, I’m a firm believer they should for once go back to one of their old franchises after failing with Everwild. Like, go all out on a Banjo-Kazooie or maybe even something more simple and do a remaster of Kazooie and Tooie as a collection and release it on all platforms. That was you can gauge interest in a sequel and then build from there. People have been asking for that game for a while now, I think it’s worth giving it a try! Kameo also has a lot of potential for a sequel and is probably everyone’s memories from the 360 launch so its got that going for it as well. Or a Conker sequel even! I think Rare had great success with 3D platformers (as you can see from my suggestions!) and they should go back to their roots.

They’ve pretty much shown they are more into certain kinds of games so a banjo Kazooie, Conker or platformer would in my opinion not work for them. I think Viva Pinata like some have said would be a good reboot for them and maybe building a real campaign for SOT or like you said expand it. There was that battle toads game so maybe they can work with smaller devs to update their IPS. I would like to see if Moon studios could do something with the Banjo or Kameo IP, there visuals are quite good.

I would argue that their former leadership/decision makers were more into certain kinds of games and we dont know what interests exisit within the studio otherwise.

Those leaders are no longer there, so we’ll see where the truth lies.

That’s my thinking. The leadership that has left with the recent layoffs were completely against making something from their old franchises. I don’t know how the rest of the studio feels, but to be honest, considering what recently happened, I would personally play it safe with the next game to rebuild trust and then go from there.

I want Rare working on multiple projects. Basically become like Obsidian in terms of output, with big projects and small ones.

I spent roughly 800 hours in SoT, so I’m done with it in its current form but I would be open to seeing a new world. Heck, I’d be good with them doing a Realm Reborn on the whole thing.

Outside of SoT, I want to see Rare take on Viva Pinata again. It feels like some that would do well and something they could build on.

Agreed though with Xbox remastering Gears it won’t be bad if they did a little work on some of their old IPs like Kameo to try and sell while they work on something new. The studio hasn’t had anything since SOT and the canceled Ever Wild was first revealed in 2019, it would have been good had they had some games even remasters, that might have helped their studio.

None of these are original ideas:

  1. Greenlight a sequel to Sea of Thieves.
  2. Contract out the port of Rare Replay to PlayStation/Switch.
  3. Form a small incubation team to create a mobile Viva Piñata game.
  4. Partner with Toys For Bob on reviving Banjo.
  5. Partner with Iron Galaxy to revive Killer Instinct.
  6. Partner with Eidos to revive Perfect Dark
  7. Form a small incubation team on Rare’s next big IP.

Fucking profit.
