What are you watching? Movie Edition! |OT|

Watched it last week. Good action, and terrific effects. Not a fan of the narrative design though - sadly.

In his search for interesting time based concepts, he is really convoluting the message and the story.

Inception and the Dark Knight series were a high point. Tenet fails a bit for me, sadly. Anyway, a decent movie to check out after so many months of nothing.

Watched Snyder’s cut over 3 days. Can’t watch that movie in one sitting.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on Mortal Kombat?

I thought it was good with some glaring issues. Also thought the 1995 release was better in a number of ways.

I actually enjoyed it in a so bad its great kinda way.

I recently watched ‘Nobody’, which I would wholeheartedly recommend.

Don’t watch a trailer, don’t Google it. Just go in blind and enjoy. Cracking movie.

Finished rewatching the Matrix trilogy at the weekend. Some of it has dated but it’s still awesome & feels like something a bit different for a blockbuster.

Yeah heard your impressions in the latest podcast, really need to watch that!

We had a pizza and Film night with our 7 year old at the weekend, and it was her choice.

She picked a cracker.

And she adores what you are only supposed to do to the bloody doors.

The subtext passed me by a little when I first saw it, but over time it resonated with me more and more until it became clear to me. I love this film, the next 2 not so much, though I appreciate the skill that went into their production.

Its such a shame they weren’t able to use Switch as planned, I loved her character.

Last night we watched this nonsense.

What a bizarre movie. I was expecting a fun action horror about zombies taking over Las Vegas. For some strange reason the filmmakers decided to make that the pre-credit sequence. The actual film is a ridiculously overlong “rag-tag crew pulls of a heist” kind of thing, with an unfortunately forgettable cast of characters infiltrating a zombie infested Vegas to steal some money from a casino.

Literally nothing of interest happens in the whole movie. How the hell did they do nothing with this idea? Watching it was so strange. I kept thinking “that will be a setup for something later” but it never was.

In the pre-credit sequence, there was a woman with a child who seemed to be important. They were killed trying to escape Vegas while Dave Bautista, the lead character, watched in horror. They were never mentioned again in the whole movie. Who were they? What did they mean to the lead character? The film didn’t care for some reason.

Dave Bautista was offered 50 million as a reward for doing the heist. He & his friend decided not to tell the rest of the crew how much the reward was. They told everyone it was a much smaller amount. Then it never came up again. Why? What was the point? Who the fuck knows.

One of the crew used a big power saw to kill zombies, again in the pre-credit sequence. He reluctantly came back on board & brought his big saw with him. Before the crew entered Vegas for the heist, there was even a scene where the annoying guy in the crew picked up the saw & the other guy said “Don’t ever touch my saw”. Then they entered Vegas & he never used the saw again! It just vanished from the film! Like… What?!

The zombies were actually aliens. That’s not a spoiler because it literally means nothing. It has no relevance to the plot or anything that happens. You could actually be forgiven for not even noticing the fact while watching the film. I didn’t notice.

There was a zombie alien tiger that existed for no reason except to kill one character in a ridiculously overlong scene.

I could go on but I’ll stop. It was one of the most ridiculous films I’ve ever seen. When it ended, I did actually ask aloud “What was the point in any of that?” & my wife just laughed. Then she went on the tablet, looked up the film’s imdb page & said “Oh, the zombies were aliens” & we both laughed.

When Zack Snyder made Army of the Dead, he was either drunk or high or just had some money to spend & threw a film together for a laugh.

I started watching this last night too. I rate movies on whether I stay awake or not, AotD did not pass that test. I might try and rewatch but by the sound of it probably not worth it.

With all that said and true, I view Army of the Dead as Snyder’s best movie.

I quite like the guy to be honest. Thought Dawn of the Dead & 300 were really good fun. Watchmen & Man of Steel were superhero films with a bit of a different vibe, which I enjoyed. I don’t think he’s a terrible filmmaker or anything.

God only knows what he was thinking with Army of the Dead though.

Yes, Dawn of the Dead and 300 were good, but those were so long ago. That’s like from a time from before he got too full of himself so maybe held back on his impulses on what to do as a director/producer. Watchmen started down the path of more typical Snyder so was less than should have been.

Army of the Dead also had expensive reshoots as the helicopter pilot parts had to be entirely replaced to include Tig Notaro and remove Chris D’Elia.

Been meaning to see if we had a movie thread, otherwise was going to make my own. Glad to see I don’t have to put that amount of work into it. haha

I’ve been watching a lot of movies lately like Pirates of the Caribbean 1-5, Nightmare on Elm Street 2-NN, Candyman, The Conjuring films, etc.

I really enjoy horror movies, but watch just about anything. I do keep everything updated on my Letterboxd profile!
