What are you currently listening to?

That is the one thing I miss about spotify. My collection of lofi playlists.

Oh no!! Did you end up switching streaming services?

No, I ditched it to save money, there were annoying omissions here in DE, and I own tons of music and live/bootleg stuff too.

The odd “Random” playlist like lofi or dnd background stuff if we play boardgames was great tho

Love me some Editors.

Can’t wait till the world gets back to normal & they start doing gigs again. Was lucky enough to catch them when they were touring “In Dreams” & it really was a great night. They’re such a tight live band these days.

Absolutely, my love of music is pretty eclectic but Jazz is one of my most beloved genres. Bill Evans is amazing, as is Chet Baker, Charles Mingus, Stan Getz, Wynton Marsalis, and Miles Davis, of course. There are dozens of others that I’ve followed since I was a wee lad; jazz in itself is such a unique and vast genre that I feel that anyone interesting in becoming a musician should really add some of those greats to their listening repertoire.

Yessirrr…

Being Indian myself, there are a lot of parallels between jazz and our own Hindustani Classical, how improvisation is so core to both of their identities. In fact many jazz legends like John and Alice Coltrane, and more recently, through the rise of Neo Soul, from artists like Hiatus Kaiyote and even hip hop artists like Flying Lotus, or even the Jazz icon Norah Jones who’s the daughter of a Hindustani icon lol, all actively learned and adopted and evolved their own sounds, I love it. More people should explore music from around the world.

Jazz and Hip-hop though are easily my two go to genres, I can’t live without them now lol.

Quite possibly the most powerful hip-hop track (and album) this whole decade.

So I’ve been a bit over the place sonically, here are some of my favorite tunes from artists I always gravitate back to seasonally:

Goddamn, I couldn’t agree more; Kendrick is more important to hip-hop than Kanye ever was (imo).

naaah I would resist that lol.

Kanye was to 2000s what Kendrick has been for 2010s. No other hip hop artist experimented with sound and style as much as Kanye. He comes from the Dilla/Pete Rock era and while a lot of artists still stuck to classic boom-bap (which I personally love as well), he was one of the few to get beyond it and experiment so much. He brought in rock, grunge, soul, industrial, noise, so on and evolved it in his own way. I do think in today’s Hip-hop however, Kendrick is more emblematic than Kanye. The latter fell off a bit imo (no offense to him tho, it was clear my mans was dealing with a lot of stuff himself ranging from mental health issues to dealing with stardom). Coming from a sound and production standpoint (equally important in hip-hop), Kanye was very important. Lyrically tho, yeah Kendrick is just faaaaar ahead of Kanye and far more impactful culturally.

Can’t wait for Kendrick’s next album tho, damn.

@Knottian I find this particularly relaxing. It also transports me to a country that I have spent a lot of time exploring and truly love.

When it comes to Lyrics Kung Fu Kenny got it locked! Ye on beats is out of this world tho. The influence that he has had on Kid Cudi and Travis Scott to name a few is clear. While we talking about Hip Hop do y’all listen to Freddie Gibbs?

Yessirr. Bandana was one of the best albums of 2019 and Alfredo last year.

Freddie is definitely one of my favorites right now lol. Has an intoxicating cadence, flow and he just knows how to ride a beat. The amount of collaborations he’s making with so many of my other favorite artists is crazy. He was in griselda members albums, he was on Tom Misch’s album, he collabd with Squarepusher, Alchemist, Madlib, Mos def, so on.

Plus his Instagram stories are mad hilarious :joy: :joy:

I have his recent tiny desk concert on repeat several times a week. It’s just stank face 24X7 with Freddie’s music.
