My guess?
Activision/Blizzard games will be multiplat, while Bethesda and Xbox game studio will be mostly case by case unless its multiplayer or very niche in general.
That’s my takeaway, at least They thought about the hardware folks at the very least.
Although i think the perception of every game being made available via an app on Tv be somewhat apprehensive for me. Mostly because of how cloud would work on that aspect as well as preservation of game disks and such.
My guess, anything that’s from XGS will be exclusive and everything else everywhere, but then he even says launch exclusives and what context does that mean. He could be talking about all their games are at launch exclusive, which I doubt because DOOM isn’t a launch exclusive so what else could he mean. Another thing could be XGS titles could be launch exclusives then in X years get ported.
I think this whole thing isn’t clear because it’s not a cut and dry thing, things like if a GaaS title does well from the onset, do they need to port it everywhere or do they port it later when it’s dying down like SoT. For a quick example Forza Horizon 5 is still played by millions and has been in the top 10 since launch, does it really need to be ported today or can they port it when FH6 launches or even after FH6 launches, maybe not at all.
They could do a couple of options;
- Port everything, XGS, Bethesda, ABK day 1
- Port everything, but XGS titles not day 1 after an exclusive period
- Port all GaaS titles day 1 and keep SP exclusive
- Port each game on a game by game basis determined by it’s performance and whether it is better off being exclusive or not
So by saying “launch exclusives” he’s actually saying “timed exclusives” or am I wrong for interpreting it that way?
Probably not, as that’s how I see it. But I’m also in the Xbox is going full 3rd party train, and moves they’re making are to try and mitigate the loss of their userbase.
I’m also here until Microsoft kills Xbox and then, I don’t know, I don’t care about PC gaming and never will. I don’t want to get a Playstation and I don’t want to get a Nintendo system.
I also don’t care about cloud gaming enough to use it for more than testing out a game.
I REALLY think people need to get over this multi plat stuff and stop acting like it’s the end of the world.
It’s been talked about ALOT, the console space is NOT growing, the same 200 million people are just buying consoles every gen and hardware marketshare is just swapped between them.
Let me blow your mind and say their is world in the future where local hardware is not a thing. When that happens YOU as an Xbox gamer will be in much better shape, your account/games/saves will go with you regardless of any local hardware.
Think of it like Steam, you are a steam user you buy steam games and you can play those games on pretty much whatever device you want. Xbox is leading the way in the console space in BC/forward compatibility and making sure your accounts and games are usable regardless of hardware.
Stop thinking of plastic boxes VS other plastic boxes, stop being “concerned” over hardware sales.
The hardware will be of less importance to gaming over time, think of yourself as an Xbox user and not a Xbox Console user.
Also WHY is everyone tripping over “case by case”? Why can’t Xbox just do “case by case” Why is everyone trying to corner them into making future commitments they cannot predict just so they can have some gothca quotes later on?
Case by Case is simple and the perfect way to approach this. Not every game is a good candidate but their is also no single or set of circumstances that you can predict on that would apply.
Let MS actually look at each game and make a better determination if it would be a benefit to go multi plat or not.
The fun thing is that you can interpret it however you want! Non-committal corporate speak is the gift that keeps on giving.
Good points. As an Xbox user i think we are set for whatever happens, i think Nintendo is also thinking of this but is a hunch on that one. Playstation is the one am more concerned about, mostly because its focus too much on third party deals and being the market leader than in investing back to their userbase and studios.
Least of all that Sony is still in debt and no one cares to talk about. Which is high enough reason to be concerned as a customer.
Sony will be dragging their heals and fleecing their customer base instead of trying harder to expand. I would be pissed if I was still a Sony user and had spent so much money on games that will never be BC and have to go through sony figuring out that local hardware does not have a long term future.
Sony fans are probably going to be SOL in the long term
So would you like to share your interpretation of it?
But nobody in this thread said any of the things you brought up.
“Case by case basis”. That’s the plan and there really isn’t much more to interpret beyond that in my opinion. Games will either be exclusive, exclusive for a time or will release everywhere at once and those decisions will be made on a case by case basis.
They’re essentially giving themselves cover for whatever they decide to do and they’re being purposefully ambiguous about it.
To put it differently, they’re committing to having launch exclusives, but they’re not ruling out the possibility those games might go elsewhere.
The quote isn’t about case by case basis though. We’ve known that for a very long time.
It’s about the new quote in this thread:
“We are absolutely committed to having launch exclusives on Xbox”
To put it differently, they’re committing to having launch exclusives, but they’re not ruling out the possibility those games might go elsewhere.
So you’re in agreement with me because that’s basically what I said in my original post you quoted. “Timed exclusives”.
If that’s how you want to interpret my comments, sure. But, I’m guessing you’re interpreting his comments to mean all games will be timed exclusive, which I personally don’t believe will be the case. Phil’s comments on the other hand imply they’ll have full exclusives with more games, but not all, going to other platforms.
It’s all PR corporate speak, and you can read into it however you want because they won’t give definitives. That was my point.
You quoted me with a smarty remark only to basically say you interpreted the same way I did. That’s all. Have a wonderful day!
It was a smarty remark aimed at Matt Booty and Xbox, not you.
Also, I don’t think we interpreted it the same way, but whatever makes you feel better I guess.
Good god, just pick a direction and go 100% on it… If you’re committing to launch exclusives you’re basically admitting they’re still important for the hardware sales, otherwise there would literally be no point in even having them. Xbox had what people who even hate the brand are saying as the best showcase of the gen and it took all of 2 days for the topic to go from the great showcase to what exclusivity for Xbox looks like.
