Valve announce new hardware for 2026, and are making a play for your living room

For me as a primary gaming system its not terribly interesting. For a living room EmuDeck box…sign me up.

I’ll probably get GMKtec K12 so that I can later get USB4-compatible eGPU to use across multiple devices - so far I can game enough with Series X and Xbox Ally X.

I believe they’ve stated it’s 4k60 via upscaling.

Well damn. And that in 2026? Nah.

I’ll absolutely wait for late 2027 for that next Xbox. I’ll have my whole library of bought games and Game Pass, I’ll likely have Steam on it and of course significantly better specs than XSX and PS5.

Or did Nick mean Half Life 3 revealed next week and exclusive to Steam? :face_with_tongue:

Because depending on how amazing that game would potentially be…nah. who am I kidding? Still, Nick spoke of something for Next week , so this isn’t that.

That’s the interesting question.

And will it suffer from the obscene price increase for DRAM, which had 170% price jumps over the past few weeks.

No one knows. However when asked, the response was:

“Steam Machine’s pricing is comparable to a PC with similar specs.”

Cool that there’s a fourth competitor in the console space but personally, I will wait for the Xbox/PC console hybrid.

And everyone has upscaling. It’s still worse marketing to push this as a 4K/60fps machine as pushing PS5/XBSX were. However, the current-gen hardware get somewhat of a pass as they were released 5 years ago and the games were less demanding. This will release next year and the games are far more demanding now.

But marketing it as a 1080p/1440p machine won’t get the attention. Damn marketing.

Honestly this all sounds pretty neat. I don’t know if I’ll be all that interested in the Steam Box, but the Steam Frame does sound appealing. If I can get a Quest like experience without having to worry about Meta harvesting all of my data, that would be nice. Price will be important, but I can’t see how any of this will be cheap.

I like how all of their devices are running SteamOS, which make your entire gaming experience seamless across all devices.

Next gen Xbox has an easy dub, just through sheer games compatibility, GTA, Fortnite, Battlefield, Minecraft, Roblox and every other game with anti cheat should all be natively supported, along with every game single launcher.

They just need to stick the marketing and not rub AI in everyone’s faces. See the distinct lack of AI mentioned in steam release. People will be ready with their pitchforks, if Xbox focuses on copilot or whatever.

If they do, which in all honesty am doubting they do as of right now. There no indication of them doing this at all.

Genuine question, I’m not trying to be dumb, but is this just a PC with SteamOS and a neat looking form factor? Other than the cube aspect, you could build a PC with similar specs this afternoon, install SteamOS and hook it up to your TV and you’d have a machine that does everything this hardware does?

Correct.

But there is some alure to a well designed device…and not having to do it yourself.

That’s fair. And I guess if you want to get meta, modern consoles are mostly just pre-built PCs with a custom OS.

According to DF it’s between a Series S and PS5/XSX.

Oliver played Cyberpunk on it and said it was about 1440p/60fps but once he enabled ray tracing it went down to 30fps.

I think its important to remember that this is a niche product. Its a cool device for a small group of people. I want one specifically for a compact but powerful emulation station device for the living room.

But other than that, I likely wouldnt do much normal gaming on it.

I can see the appeal of it, I just don’t really get why people are saying “This will turn the console market on its head” and “Sony and Microsoft will have to react to this” and such. If you want a console experience with PS5 level hardware in 2026… just buy a PS5? And if you’re a PC person, nothing is stopping you from building a PC just like this product right now.

I mean, an entry-level, deliberately underpowered, but (presumably) affordable device that plays scaled-down versions of the same AAA games that more expensive devices play?

Steam Machine is just like a Series S, except you don’t have to call human resources!

Sounds cool, having a 4th actual competitor in the market can only do it good.
