Tom Warren: XSS GPU to be 20CU running at 1.55Ghz ≈ 3.97TF

Edit: sorry I think I got the wrong end of the stick, seems you are just trying to get to the bottom of how x1 games will playing on Lockhart.

However it would be a poor decision to have X1 games run on X1 mode on Lockhart.

I guess its not the end of the world because of who the X1 target audience is

If Ram amount is the only thing stopping Lockhart run BC games in 1X mode its seems a poor decision not to go with 12gb, then again the goal of Lockhart is to play next gen games at a affordable price and X1 games in BC mode will still benefit from the better Lockhart hardware (highest dynamic res, better framerates)

Games like just cause 3 with an aweful framerate should be a locked 30fps.

Also what will probably happen is cross gen big games like cod Warzone, fortnite, Gta5 , RDR2 etc will probably get Lockhart specific, then again I can imagine Microsoft wanting devs having to do 2 different next gen patches? I wonder if there something they can do on a system level which will enable X1 games to play on Lockhart in 1X mode, maybe disable higher res textures? I do wonder how 1X games utilise the RAM.

Thanks for the explanation. Apologies, I thought at first you were referring to backwards compat from One (i.e 360 and OG Xbox).

I imagine, at least in the case of 1P games, that through Smart Delivery, they’ll update their games to run the game at the best it can on Lockhart.

No problem you’re good!

I think Lockhart will be pretty compelling to normal users - “play all of your existing Xbox One games (or any games you missed) and all next gen games, with virtually no load times!” - and it won’t really matter what resolution modes and so on are available for each title. It just matters to the obsessives like us on a forum lol.

Oh, yeah. It is weird to think about Xbox One games as needing “backward compatibility” but we’re almost there!

Re: Smart Delivery, I think you’re right, at least for their most recent games.

I edited that post further, i will add though I just don’t think the hardware guys at Microsoft will be able to sleep at night knowing X1 games play on Lockhart at the same resolution as the base xbox one.

Hopefully they will be able to emulate 1X mode by using the SSD, i mean could textures just be streamed from the ssd? I dont know, maybe 7.5gb of faster RAM may be able to perform as well as 9gb of GDDR5

Gears 5, FH4, SoT, Minecraft and Ori 2 all need a recompile and additional code for their Series X enhancements. So they can also add a extra mode for Series S.

Yeah maybe they can do something clever, idk. And of course I would expect Lockhart to play One S games at maxed dynamic resolution, stable 30 FPS if it was unstable before, with vastly reduced load times etc. So it will still be a much better way to play than a One S. I just don’t expect it to get One X textures and framerate upgrades (30 → 60) unless they pull a rabbit out of their hat.

What your describing (hitting max resolutions and frame rate of XBO versions) is exactly what we’ll get on the Series S. The type of person who cares about IQ and higher frame rates will be the person who already has a 4K TV and a One X or Pro. The Series S isn’t designed for these people. It’s designed for those still happy with their 1080p TVs and a standard XBO or PS4.

Yes, I agree. I was just making the specific point that, unless we learn something new, Series S will not get the high res textures and higher framerate modes available in “Xbox One X Enhanced” titles without additional developer work.

Well we cant presume either way, we just dont know maybe xss will do BC in 1X mode, maybe it will do it in 1S mode, we just dont know and it could be either or.

It will be interesting to see how games receiving next gen updates on the Series S, like FH4 and Gears 5, compare to the 1X versions.

There were Lockhart GitHub leaks? I only remember PS5 and Series X

Yep, I never looked at the data myself but if you dig up next gen threads from January or so on the other Era you can find the info. Basically, the data on Sparkman (Lockhart SOC) was apparently just a copy paste from the XSX data so you’re sort of right that there wasn’t really full details on Lockhart. For example it also said 56 CUs which is obviously wrong. But one of the few differences recorded was the available BC modes.

See above, we pretty much do know based on the leak. Of course it’s always possible there’s some other solution or that things change, but evidence so far (plus only 10GB of RAM) has it looking like Series S only does One S mode for back compat.

Some have noted that the new game cases actually do have blankspace where “Xbox Series S” can be slotted in.

Note the bar where the consoles supported are listed.

Rumors around xbone sad edition said Ms was coming up with trade places where you could convert your physical copy to a digital one.

It would certainly less the blow. You’d be unable to resell the games but would be able to bring your entire library with you.

They are one and the same with smart delivery. In practice for us it will be like X enhancements, but they will contain the next gen bits with new assets and settings.

Goodnight…with all the concern in this thread based on rumored specs and a lot of times no real understanding of how any of this works wrt architecture of hardware (I’m no expert myself!), Microsoft certainly has its work cut out for it on how to message this machine.

Everything I’ve read indicates it’s a box that’s more powerful than the One X despite the lower TF number, will outperform the last gen machines handily, and will play 1080p scaled-down versions of next gen games for cost-conscious gamers. Seems like a winner to me and a great “GamePass box” for a second TV or travel.

Series S is designed for casuals, kids and people who don’t care about 4K gaming. We will see differences like these  next gen and that’s OK.

I wonder how much loss is Microsoft willing to eat up to give this console a really competitive pricepoint. You can currently find deals for Xbox One Xs for 200-300 Euros on a regular basis. This really shouldn’t be higher than that.
