The six nominees for GOTY at TGA revealed - No place for Forza Horizon 5, Psychonauts 2 and Deathloop nominated

Oh damn. That’s extremely brutal. Kratos has definitely calmed down then. lol. I played GOW and could never defeat Ares at the end so I never bothered with GOW 2 or 3.

That Ares was a pain in the ass I can still distinctly remember that don’t worry lol. But God of War 2 is imo a much better game than the first (something about 2007 just made sure that every game releasing that year was automatically GOATed lol). Expands his moveset, weapons and abilities, much better and diverse level design, a whole lot of bosses, and the story was just chef’s kiss. There is definitely an argument to be had that the franchise lost some of its great elements in the process of its rebooting but that’s a whole another topic.

But those horrible QTEs can stay dead, that’s for sure.

If Sony were to release a remake/remaster of the GOW trilogy for PS5, I would give them a chance but otherwise, nah. lol. GOW 2 sounds even better.

it’s all backwards compatible I think cuz they released the whole remastered trilogy on PS4.

Can we get back on topic?

They ask this every day. Why? I get engagement and shit but like, stop rubbing salt on the wound. You fucked up this year… royally. What are you gonna do about it? Fix the cutoff? Be more transparent? Diversify the panel? Or just try and weaponize Forza and Returnal fans to get engagement. Fuck, makes me not want to watch the show. I gotta stop feeding this shit.

I hope Xbox spoils what they’re bringing cause I’m this close to just ordering in a pizza and unwinding with the Halo Campaign instead. I won’t have time for it on the 8th.

P.S. Fans don’t 100% determine the choice when Keegs himself picks the 30 nominees. Flight Sim, my runner up choice last year, was unavailable to vote for.

Will never understand why so many of you guys go nuts over ONE award when there’s hundreds of game of the year awards given out by websites, magazines, forums, etc. Forza Horizon 5 does have a single award thus far by the way but RE 8 Village leads with 3.

Who the f is doing GOTY awards before the year is over anyway?

TGA is more for marketing/sales. There’s a total of 8 listed at gameawards.net.

There will probably be around 30 or so by the end of the year but vast majority are January/February. It all is what it is. Lucky for me, whichever game wins overall wins. It’s not going to change anything for me personally and should be the same for everyone. Each individual should only care about what their own GOTY is. In my opinion anyway.

Thanks for the link! Easy way to keep track of who are morons and who are not.

Hahaha. You’re welcome. Out of 18 years, my GOTY matches the overall GOTY only 4 times.

As for TGA, I watch it every year for the game reveals and trailers which is what the vast majority watch them for and im expecting a few good gameplay reveals and announcements this year after a lackluster 2020 TGA. Hoping for a few release dates as well.

Had to check mine, 3 years my GOTY matched lol.

Last 4 years it was only 1 that matched lol

Because people claim they fuck up every single year for leaving out X or Y. Doesn’t make a difference. The machine keeps rolling on, and that includes Tweets for engagement. It’s not a fuck up to them. It just looks like an irrational angry mob who will all vote and watch the show anyway, like every single year.

Forza should have been nominated, but there is a game that gets snubbed every single year. I think it’s far past time to move on.

Jumping in. Off the bat, IGN voted Forza 5. Will update over time.

Keegs ain’t thrilled with the convo.

Gerstman says it’s due to separation of duties and most played outweigh the best and this works against types of games.

Keighley asks about possible single player narrative bias, Guardian agrees it exists.

Some publications vote by jury, some are lefr a5 the whim of one representative.

Guardian also believes hard and open world games are snubbed.

Keegs addresses Jez without naming him.

Keegs: “I fully admit the panel probably biases itself towards those sort of narrative experiences. There have been years when multiplayer games have won, I mean, Overwatch won Game of the Year. So yeah, it has happened before but it is rare and the other argument put there is a lot of these ongoing games people play have been out for years and while we have Best Ongoing Game, people are like ‘Why aren’t those games Game of the Year?’ You guys always focus on the shiny new games every year.”

Keegs: “We could do 10 nominees, things like that but I like 6. I like that it because it does cause these debates and things do get left off vs. like ‘Yeah, every major game this year is nominated for Game of the Year, isn’t that fantastic.’”

The Guardian: “You know, there is no objective Game of the Year.”

Keegs: “Yeah”

Guardian: “It’s fun. That people disagree, that’s the whole fun for me of the stage of the year.”

Keegs: “Hopefully, sometimes you know, it’s very personal for folks because we love our games. That’s why it creates these debates and discussions.”

They are now going into the noms, starting with Deathloop.

Deathloop: All 3 enjoyed. Described as Unique, Fun, Filmic (Jez and Rand would have a field day) and having great mechanics and performances. Story was criticized, particularly the third act.

It Takes Two: Gertsman didn’t play, IGN liked but didn’t nominate, Guardian loved.

Psychonauts 2: Most unanimous praise thus far. Guardian’s pick. Praise for gameplay, polish, story and Microsoft giving the team the funds and time to make it great (both Keegs and Jeff call them out as a positive influence).

Metroid Dread: This one was weird. I get the vibe Keegs didn’t like it and was trying to be nice. Calls it the token Nintendo nominee and a timekiller before Prime 4. Jeff loves it. Keegs then asks Guardian and IGN if they give Nintendo, Xbox and PlayStation a nominee each year to mend the warz. Even though this is the first time in the TGAs history Xbox has been nominated. Fucking weird. Barely talked Metroid.

Ratchet and Clank: Praised for polish and quality. Docked a tad for lack of innovation.

Returnal is brought up briefly. Keegs calls it a big snub al a Forza. Jeff says the patches came way too late. IGN I believe notes it did get a nod in Direction.

RE Village: IGN enjoyed but felt it only deserved a spot if there were 10 nominees and more deserving ones like Forza and Returnal got in, Jeff feels it took Hitman’s spot but says RE did a good job modernizing and feels the IP helped get it on the list, Geoff agrees saying games with “Global Appeal” tend to make the list but is glad Deathloop, Psychonauts and It Takes Two broke through.

Follows up with discussions. Geoff likes games that cause discussion. Geoff only predicted a few of the GOTY nominees. Geoff knows of the criticism of rushing through awards but has no plans to address. He tries to ensure categories with several of the same nominees (i.e. sound design, art direction, etc.) are rushed through so it’s not SSM accepting all the awards or something. Geoff praises the diversity of the candidates in Best Performance, and genre diversity across the show. Goodbyes all around.

Ok, thread is done… whew. It was an interesting listen, and I’m glad Psychonauts 2 in particular has some champions, but it also gave off a vibe of “We know our system is flawed and biased, but we have no intentions of fixing it” which rubbed me the wrong way. “I like to generate discussion” even worse. Jez wrote his article because a Playground dev came to him dejected and defeated for fucks sake. These awards for us at the end of the day are at best, a celebration, and at worst, console war bragging points for those into that. For the devs, they mean everything from sales, to chances to be hired or get a raise to ensuring they get their next game funded to just a sense that their work matters. And the TGAs still fall far fucking short there.

First, thank you for the summary!

To my surprise IGN is looking more and more like the sane ones.

I’m leaning more than ever into the territory of gEoFf being a very unlikable person, this solidifies that.

Did they discuss the stupidity of having an awards show without all the games released in that year? Game of the October 2020 to October 2021 is a weird award.

GOO20TO21? lol

They’re journos alright.
It’s also funny how they take away credibility from their onw reviews by understanding there’s bias.

Geoff doesn’t come across as unlikeable in this. When he geeks out over Psychonauts, It Takes Two and Ratchet, it can come across as endearing. He just also strikes me as partially out of touch and “Meh, that’s the way it is” without really considering alternatives. I like generating debate doesn’t come across as helpful so much as it does just reductive and he acts like only 10 big games are released a year which is farcical. He made a list of 30 last year for the audience to vote on and still snubbed MSFS and tons of JRPGs in particular.

No address of the timeline other than a debate if a game from a prior year can win or be nominated in the context of GAAS, not something like Smash or Halo.
