This weekend is a celebration of gaming and a huge one for Xbox. Of course reporters and insiders are about to FUD as much as possible to take away Xbox’s moment.
However this is the same Tom Warren who said Microsoft was “considering” not putting COD on Game Pass and we see what happened there.
It’s a tricky situation they are getting themselves in.
Saw a tweet by a Xbox fan saying if Halo goes, anything goes, and he will too and I do get that. If that’s not the case and they intend to keep any new mainline Halo exclusive they really need to be super clear about it. But I don’t trust anything anyway until it’s official.
What if all these upcoming promising (some of them new IP) don’t move the needle enough for the suits? Will it then come to a point where they go fully multiplatform? I’m prepared for it all. We’ll see.
He used the words wisely though. Consider isn’t guaranteed. If anything, he did this to bring attention now to get out of the way and remember, Phil will be in present, so it’s just more ammo to give interviewers more questions to ask.
He wants to sell subscriptions to his newsletter and doesn’t care about the damage he does to the brand as a result.
It’s always “considered”, but it’s shared as fact all over the internet. So people going into Sunday thinking Xbox’s biggest known IP is going third-party so everything is no matter that he states there are still exclusives.
I understand. For me, I read it, “okay” is my reaction, and life goes on. I let others think on how to react. The one that has the best track record is BillBil, only because he knows the timing of the credibility. He picks it when it’s about to happen within the week or even month. He chose his battle carefully.
The problem with all of this is messaging. We are not going full multiplatform… except with most of our known first party titles like Starfield, Halo CE, Age, Hellblade 2, and Doom.
It can’t be difficult to lay out what is and isn’t exclusive, timed or multiplat. Like just set some rules:
All future remakes/remasters are multiplatform, regardless of IP
All future sequels/new IPs are exclusive
Legacy IP (formerly multiplat) will be considered on a case-by-case basis
With the above, you would cover Halo CE, Gears Collection, Fallout 3, Oblivion, etc. going multiplatform. At the same time, it’s clear as an Xbox gamer that the next Halo and Gears would be exclusive.
Benefits for Xbox/PC:
Future installments to Xbox IP would be exclusive
New IP would be exclusive
Guaranteed access to all Legacy IP
Day One Game Pass
Benefits for PlayStation:
Remakes/Remasters to Xbox/Legacy IP
Hopes and dreams that you will get access to sequels of Legacy IP
hopefully the Halo CE remaster PS5 rumor is false. what is the purpose of putting a 20 year old game on other competing systems? the mass majority who wanna play Halo, already have an Xbox or PC. is selling 15,000-20,000 copies on PS even worth the damaging discourse with fans?
personally, I have no problem with this article. I don’t mind (some) games going multi like Doom (rumor) or Elder Scrolls - those make real financial sense! but Halo CE? c’mon now lol
anyways, I won’t comment on this topic again until Xbox makes it official. until then, it’s just a pointless rumor to me. hyped for sunday!
I really hate this trend of reporting on “considering” or “talked about”.
Do no one have jobs? Have they ever been in a meeting? Thats what meetings are, talking about what you want to accomplish and how you want to accomplish it. You “consider” any number of things and hash them out.
It is entirely irresponsible to report on anything other than actual announced decisions.
At my job we considered having a requirement that all student buy their own laptop. We decided against it, so who gives a shit if we considered it. We decided it was a bad idea and wasnt going to work.
People gotta eat. Also, perhaps it’s a reminder. I assume this will now once again be a question at the June showcase that Xbox won’t be able to dodge and hopefully pacify their audience with proper answers on the topic.
There are going to be a lot of people asking of camera. I don’t think they can hide throughout the show. Also, Ryan Mccaffrey is sure to ask when it comes to these kinds of matter you can be sure he won’t hesitate to make them look bad.
At this point I am almost convinced people spend more time worrying about what is and isn’t exclusive than actually playing and enjoying the exclusive content.
The reality is that these games are day and date on gamepass. Whether something goes day and date on Playstation, or in 2 years time really shouldn’t be a concern. Microsoft will make whatever decisions they see best for the future of their business.
The games aren’t going away from the Xbox platform. Theyre still going to be in gamepass. You can still enjoy them.
No one even knows if this is happening for real, or what games, or even when. This worrying about “what if” is just pointless.
Im not trying to come after people for speculating/worrying. However I find it bizzare how journalists keep reporting about “what ifs” and “discussions” that happened internally. I guess it drives engagement and clicks
Agreed and this is why I said it’s messaging. It will ultimately come down to how it’s messaged.
I could make an argument for nearly every game Tom listed for why it should/could go multiplatform:
Halo CE (Remaster)
Age (Remaster/Legacy)
Hellblade 2 (Legacy)
Doom (Legacy)
The one that makes absolutely zero sense is Starfield. You literally had Sarah Bond on stage say “…and yes it’s exclusive”. It also goes against the whole “This is about creating great exclusive games on platforms where Game Pass exists.”
Some were up in arms when it was rumored that the next Doom would be multiplatform. However, in my opinion, it would be easy for Phil and team to weasel out of Phil’s quote by simply reiterating 'Legacy IP would be case-by-case."
Even considering a Starfield port goes against everything Xbox management has said up to this point. That’s the messaging issue.
Note: I realize that all of this is rumors and speculation. Until it’s official, nothing has happened. My reply is more on the ‘what if’.
