Xbox is going nowhere. They just need to explain it like people are 5 years old to understand that if nothing change gaming is fucked.
I don’t think anyone should have any worry of them abandoning hardware anytime soon, it simply doesn’t make sense at all
Wasn’t it in summer of last year during the FTC trial that Satya framed his position pretty clearly that it was about competing as a publisher? And didn’t he aldo say he wants to do to Microsoft Gaming what he did with Office, put it everywhere?
I’m fairly certain he also said he had no love for the console exclusive model.
All of that is consistent with his early comments back in 2014 around cloud-first, mobile-first (i.e. he clarified that means the experience goes with you across screens) company philosophy. He specifically said that Xbox was a unique opportunity in that regard all those years ago.
While I think progress has been slow, one can’t deny they’ve been making bold moves in that direction for a decade.
And I don’t think it’s a miscalculation. Referencing the Insomniac leaks, Sony acknowledged that Microsoft is ahead in its distribution model compared to PlayStation. That tells me where Sony eventually wants to be, but I suspect they’ll take that road more slowly because they have way more to lose and they don’t have the experience in people, process and tech that Microsoft has.
With Microsoft “it is what it is”. I fully expect them to yet again step out first and fall through the floor just like in 2013. No “doom and gloom” just me going on their track record. Maybe they’ll get it right this time but for now I remain skeptical.
clickbaiting for…what? my discord server?
i didnt even post the fucking conversation on resetera lmao.
It’s all about communication. But that’s a Microsoft problem and not just Xbox lol.
As a reminder, we can all discuss the points (regardless of opinion) without attacking the messenger.
FTR - I was guilty of the same so this is just a universal reminder for everyone, myself included.
think if we extrapolate from phil saying “nothing has fundamentally changed” regarding exclusivity, maybe that just means they’ll let devs focus on one platform if they prefer to do so, and maybe when the sales tail off they’ll consider ports for revenue reasons later?
its all speculation and in flux rn. but if im satya nadella, and im seeing sea of thieves blow the fuck up on playstation, what argument will i accept that porting halo/forza etc is a bad idea? imo.
they compete with fortnite etc. now which is an everywhere game. in order to compete with fortnite, you have to at least be available and visible. and to cut through the zeitgeist, you really need to be everywhere. fallout tv show blowing up fallout across every platform is a great example of something cutting through zeitgeist in such an extreme way. if im final fantasy 7 rebirth and im only available on one platform… it doesn’t really cut through the attention being vacuumed up by fortnite etc. it’s not exactly an apples to apples comparison, but hopefully that illustrates the point.
starfield being on pc at launch helped it capture some of that audience mindshare. it was incredibly controversial but it was inescapable, and set engagement records for bethesda at the time. if starfield had been xbox console-only, it wouldn’t have generated anywhere near as much discussion more than likely. mat piscatella was getting attacked on twitter for suggesting helldivers 2 did crazy numbers mainly cus of PC as well.
I would like believe, i would, but then the interviews of Verge and polygon comes and showed to me and customers that he really does not like the ones who stuck around when things were dire.
Honestly think its going to occur. Their messaging is way out of place, and its going to backfire horribly.
They just do not like their core audience anymore is what i think.
i think he meant how some journalist change their minds whenever there new information coming up regarding what they themselves have thought would occur.
Sorry if i sounded rude on that.
Yeah its horrible. Hire folks who actually know how to message properly.
Shit i mean, Inxile has a better way of communication then Xbox for crying out loud. Its one of their first party studios so its even more sad.
If it’s all speculation and flux I really gotta recommend not going out there and saying everything is going multi platform lol.
i didnt “go out there” i said my opinion in private, and i even said there it was speculation and in flux, and that it was my opinion. someone anonymously posted it on resetera as bullet points, without context, and people are mad at me for it. lol
im not going to stop talking to my xb2podcast community just cus people are eager to find something to hate me for, without even checking on context.
I feel you, without context it didn’t sound like speculation so my bad lol.
im not denying that i do believe that eventually we see the barriers come down. but i dont know for sure yea. i guess this is why a lot of journalists arent really active in communities etc. idk what im doing.
just a matter of when, and how they message it, and what the fine print says, and what the value proposition for xbox hardware is in the post-exclusivity world. im intrigued to find out!
I’m not!
True. Next gen will happen and I’m certainly not gonna worry about after that. I live now
My only worry, I guess are third parties. Just let them still see value in making games for the Xbox console too.
I’m just not sure what people want Phil to do ?
He’s not some messiah that can fix something with a wave of his hand. If Nintendo and Sony’s hardware are selling well, there’s nothing Xbox can do to expand its console market in any meaningful way.
The console market has a certain ceiling and it won’t go beyond that. Has there been mistakes ? Yeah, for sure but I don’t see another timeline where XS are suddenly selling 10 million more units than it is now.
I’m still of the belief that they saw enough negative backlash and not enough sales from the single player games (even niche games hurt the brand notably) that they will be hesitant to push further. GaaS/MP games seem like a slam dunk and I think they ramp that up even further.
Dunno what that means for BIG games with MP components like Halo/Gears/Forza but I expect they’ll be hesitant due to damage to the brand.
Of course the walls are gonna come down eventually, that’s where everything is going bar Nintendo who will still be two decades behind everyone else
MS is more often than not a bit too ahead of the curve and do shit before people are ready for it and it often doesn’t work out well for them.
I do see a timeline where XS are selling 10 million less units than it is now though, and it’s the one we’re living in if Xbox continue to go third party. They’ll be digging their own graves.
