The Big ol' Xbox 3rd Party Releases Discussion Thread (HiFi, SoT, Pentiment, Grounded) (Part 1)

Sea of Thieves is also one of Xbox’s consoles killer app, if that’s on the table something like Halo infinite or Forza Horizon 5 is.

I think that you’re underestimating Sea of Thieves here. This franchise is probably as important as Gears, if not more. The game is massively successful, more than Gears 5.

Kinda off topic, but I’m curious:

Forza Horizon 5 is Xbox’s biggest game right (ignoring Minecraft, CoD, Candy Crush and such)? Did Starfield surpass it?

I wonder how they are factoring GP into this, they have 30m+ subs on console, do they expect them to stick to Xbox or jump to PC

Are they expecting all of them to stay subbed if Playstation if getting everything they get + PS exclusives also

It has the most players outside of ABK and Minecraft.

Sea of thieves, if I am reading the MS most played games thing correctly, is currently like 38th or 39th behind things like War Thunder, Madden 23, For Honor, War Frame, and Farming Simulator 22.

Is anybody buying a Xbox for it though? I feel like that time has come and gone.

It’s no different than what Sony does to stagger its releases beyond PS5, with a year or two before you see it on PC or you expect it might show up in PS Plus. They keep the new stuff as a premium offering, then the older stuff is given a second life.

To me it seems like Xbox is assessing when they have gotten ‘value’ out of it being exclusive and then port it elsewhere. How they decide is probably through engagement.

You have brought up an potentially interesting point with PlayStation as I would not be surprised if we see something similar from them in 5 years time as they seem to be having a habit of ultimately following what Xbox does. In fact I would argue PlayStation is actually better suited with this strategy due to the PlayStation brand being much stronger.

No, FH5 had 18m players in less than 2 months iirc but it was also on XB1 unlike SF

Right. Most of their biggest games are on all platforms as is. It’s just a question of how big of a hit would they take if the people who say “I’m out” aren’t bullshitting (IMO most are).

I constantly get the X mixed up. The rest I’m fine with, but when I see that X icon in a PlayStation game, I always (at least it feels like always) hit the wrong face button.

Sea of Thieves would legitimately change the nature of the discourse if that ends up on the PS5. It was a real hit over the years & it’s a good reason to own an Xbox. BTW I’m reading some comments elsewhere along the lines of “more games for more audiences is good, why the concern?”, well, the concern if there is any is the fact it’s a one way street.

Until I’m playing Ghost of Tsushima or a Mario game on my Series X, I’m not getting anything out of this push to end exclusivity which some people dream of, am I?

As I said, wait & see (pun totally unintended).

No, I fully understand that SoT is an important Xbox game and that it most assuredly helped move consoles. But, it’s been out for 6 years and it’s a live service game that probably isn’t drawing anyone new to your platform. Also, If you were going to put one of your games on a rival platforms, why wouldn’t it be a game you could continue to make money from?

Who knows, maybe my reasoning is way off, but it does make sense to me.

You’re absolutely right. Microsoft will probably make more money with this, but I’m a Xbox fan, not a Microsoft shareholder. And as a Xbox consumer, I gain nothing from this.

This is totally a one way street. Xbox consumers lose one of the biggest purchase factors of the console, while gaining nothing in return. This will just make loyal fans feeling fooled.

Now this is an argument I will happily listen to and can get behind. Unfortunately for the userbase the benefactor is MS, not you. $$$ The return street leads to MS’ bank.

But that money is to finance better games, they will tell you

You also lose nothing, except console war points.

Xbox is the gamepass box, and has a purpose until gamepass is elsewhere. I don’t care that other people can’t play the games I play. If everything going everywhere Is what it took for ABK, it’s worth it, and becomes more worth it the more acquisitions they make.

Gamepass is king, and Xbox needs to pull out all the stops till PS and Nintendo Have to accept it

Just give me a nugget. How about a Mario themed spartan armor for my chief. Just a lil somthing.

I hope it is true.

Anyone that truly wants a game exclusive to their platform is not a true honest gamer. Games everywhere has been the moto pushed by Phil.

We are not 12 years old anymore, any time I play one of these amazing games I think to myself I wish everyone had the opportunity to play them.

I am so sick of people enjoying the fact that others cannot play games or that they cannot play games. Xbox is a console that’s not what the future is. Game pass and publishing is. Every game playable in the most places possible. That was the pitch and that is what they will do.

I hope the next generation can play whatever game they choose on any platform. This division needs to stop.
