I don’t understand why people’s saying Starfield can’t be compared to Helldivers for example, but even if that was right, you could compare it to BG3 and see the difference, or even better, to Skyrim/Fallout 4.
Not counting Counter Strinke, Skyrim had the peak CCU players record for years, then Fallout 4 took it with almost 500k players, since then Steam has grown and has over 4x more players (34m now vs 8m in 2015), and still Starfield stopped at 330k concurrent players, even if Gamepass has an impact, there’s no way PC has as many GP users.
I also remember in other era or even here people guessing it’d get around 1M CCU players, just saw the thread about this topic had a poll where 80% of users thought it’d get over 500k. Also did read the game did 150k last year on UK, vs 1,1M-1,2M from FO4 and Skyrim, i am sure GP has an impact, but it can’t be that high.
This said, the game still did good numbers, probably over 3M sales and managed to attract a lot of people into GP, if we talk about flops Forza Motorsport takes the crown there, i can’t think of a bigger flop from an AAA in the recent history.
Yeah, it’s odd. Everyone and their mother was saying it was going to surpass Fallout 4 even knowing it coming out on GP. That’s the power of hindsight I guess lol.
I disagree with your take on FM though, that’s a big reach. It’s probably a flop but you can’t remember any bigger flop in recent memory ? Suicide Squad is right there lol.
I thought it too tbh, basically Bethesda games so far were like the biggest thing on Steam, and PC market had been growing absurdly, so the 470k from Fallout 4 weren’t that much anymore, we had Elden Ring, Hogwarts, BG3 or Cyberpunk around the 1M CCU already.
And about FM, Suicide Squad was also a big flop, but it charted at nº1 on UK, on physical tho, also it did like 13k CCU on Steam which is pretty pretty bad nowadays, but FM did like 4k? and was the 450th most sold videogame in the UK last year, and that’s probably the biggest market for that kind of game.
Not sure what sales numbers it did but it had to be terrible, even more for a game with over 6 years in development and a fairly big team, i doubt it’s even close to 500k sales yet.
But the UK yearly chart for Forza Motorsport include both physical and digital copies
…!
As a GP owner for 4 years in a row i wanna think GP isnt cannibalizing sales so hard, and from what i’ve seen that doesn’t seem to be the case, with day 1 GP games doing very good numbers on release on that store, such as Palwolrd for example, but that was a game that simply went viral so it’s understandable to think this case was different.
Better examples would be Cities Skylines 2 or Football Manager games, the first entry of the Paradox’ game was released in 2015 just like Fallout 4, and this sequel was released day 1 on GP, yet it managed to double the predecessor’s CCU, even tho the developers warned us before release that the game would release in a very bad state.
Same goes for Football Manager, very popular saga that has released day 1 on GP since 2019, and has been getting better sales on release than the games prior to the Gamepass releases, simply because imo, the Steam’s growth (over 2x growth in 5 years) offsets the sales lost from GP owners, which aren’t that high on PC yet
Starfield is an interesting case, I know it ended up 10th on circana (maybe that’s outdated) which is wild for a later release.
It definitely tapered off though. It will be interesting to see what’s up Bethesda’s sleeves with Shattered Space. Game was huge but I’m not sure how many bought VS streamed, gp, etc etc
where is the source for forza motorsport was the UK’s 450th best selling game of 2023? I’d be interested in seeing the entire chart if it is available somewhere
Outside of FH5, there’s been no Xbox first party game that has lasted more than 2 months on the Circana monthly list since the Gamepass era has started.
Wow there’s no way to sugarcoat it, that really is terrible performance for Forza Motorsport. Forza Motorsport 7 was number 19th in the UK back in 2017. Hopefully Starfield isn’t too far from the top 20, it charted pretty high in the US (11) and Canada (10) .
I really think that GP cannibalizes sales of games that are more console-centric, while games that are more PC-centric don’t get too affected. The majority of GP users are on console, as PC GP has not had great success in gaining users because the vast majority of PC users are too ingrained in Steam and prefer to buy their games there. So PC-centric games like Cities Skylines 2, Football Manager still have strong sales because the majority of their audience were on PC, and PC users still buy them on Steam. I suspect the reason Starfield has also done pretty well is it being a Bethesda RPG, is also strongly PC-centric. I remember the Circana and GamesIndustry reports that indicated that 2/3 of Starfield’s launch month sales were PC in the US and UK, the strongest Xbox markets.
Meanwhile, more console-centric games like Forza Motorsport have their sales much more strongly affected, since the majority of their audience for that type of game are on console, and Xbox console users are much more likely to use GP.
Just want to remind everyone: if Xbox starts making less money (THIRD PARTY GAMES WILL STOP COMING TO XBOX OMG) they will stop the ports to other consoles completely as this is something that Phil Spencer has said they will be monitoring. They won’t keep doing it if makes them less money, like many of you think. Anyway, I’m out.
And it’s a discussion point Peter Moore like to raise at any given opportunity, like when he said this in 2016
“I’m not sure there will be consoles, as we know them anymore,” Moore said. “Games will be accessed by streaming technology, so we don’t need hardware intermediaries in between the two. If you and I want to play ‘Battlefield 12’ against each other, we’ll just jump into a game via whatever monitor we happen to have in our homes. It’ll be on a chip, rather than in a box.”
He added that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are well set up to advance as technology does, so we may never see another console produced by Microsoft or Sony ever again.
So yes it will probably happen at some point but don’t take Peter Moore’s predictions of impending doom with anything other than a massive pinch of salt
Indeed. And its nothing specific to Microsoft’s console either, its for all consoles.
There seems to be decent interview in there, hidden behind clown level clickbait headline title. I see the usual places haven’t read a single word beyond that. Maybe its too difficult for them to read.
