The Big ol' Xbox 3rd Party Releases Discussion Thread (HiFi, SoT, Pentiment, Grounded) (Part 1)

Hope Pentiment is doing well on PS4/PS5 and switch but since it is on the really small side of things I dont think they are expecting much from it.

Really interested in seeing how HFR and SOT do on PS. Do you guys think they are waiting for the switch 2 to port these games? I think both of them would do fantastic on Ninty consoles.

I can absolutely see a game like Psychonauts 2 being ported to Switch. In fact, I think it could be a good thing, even more people get to play that fantastic game. PS already has it, but Switch doesn’t. Have some studio make it for Switch. While they are at it make it enhanced for PS5 perhaps? But I don’t see that as a priority.

But when it comes to day one launches, keep that on Xbox and PC for several years, don’t go overboard way too soon with that please.

Switch hardware is awful so I’m not surprised only Pentiment and Grounded have made the jump so far but yeah, both games for Switch 2 makes perfect sense, maybe even as launch titles

HFR is releasing days before Dragons Dogma 2, I don’t think it will do good on release.

Days before Dragon’s Dogma 2 AND Rise of the Ronin…it’s awesome that MS gave the game a fair chance to do well on PS5!

Horizon will be there to say, “First time?”

This!

It would have been nice to have more clarity on what criteria will be used for games going forward. I know they said “only 4 games” but we know this is just the start.

Something like the following would have provided more assurance: all 1st party games will be exclusive to Xbox & PC for a minimum of 18/24 months. After which point we will make a decision to keep it a permanent exclusive or port the game to other platforms.

We know games like Call of Duty and Minecraft will continue to be multiplatform on day one but will there be others? I know it kind of makes sense for multiplayer games but even porting things like Halo or Everwild on release would likely damage the brand IMO.

I think HFR will be on PS+ Extra within 6 months.

Hi Fi Rush was never going to do well on PS5 no matter what it released around.

You’d think it being a Japanese game it would do relatively well.

Do you think Sony would be willing to pony up the required sum?

I think its between ROR and DD2 actually lol.

So wait? Maybe this is all a ploy to soften up Japan to the idea of Xbox buying Sega?

Psychonauts 2 is a gem of a game, one of the best games I’ve played in the last few years, and it’s a platformer as well, so it’d do really well on the Switch. Next year to coincide with Switch 2 release would be a smart move.

Pun intended? :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

IMO they won’t give clearcut rules because they don’t want to impose any hard limitations. Note how all those ports are releasing at most 9 weeks after the initial announcement. Meaning that microsoft will be monitoring the data and deciding on case by case basis when to drop the port on competing consoles. The most important metric would likely be the percentage of people new to Xbox (the console or the broader ecosystem) are picking the game up, eg. if every second new Xbox owner also picks up Forza Horizon 6 twelve months after its release, then releasing it on Playstation would kill its tremendous value as a system seller. But if only every 100th new Xbox owner picks up FH6 one year after its release, then porting it to Playstation does minimum damage to the console.

Perhaps… :smirk:

We’re talking about the console maker that shut down their Japanese studio that developed or helped develop some of their best games since the og PS1. I feel like if simply being a Japanese game was all that was needed that wouldn’t have happened. Also while Hi Fi Rush is Japanese developed, the art style is very western.

I always hear people saying how much HFR looks like an anime, in truth it has more in common with stuff like Avatar, Ben 10 or Totally Spies. Cartoons in the early 2000’s that were very “anime inspired” in their art direction but were still very western. I don’t mean that as a slight to the game BTW, it’s actually part of it’s charm for me.

Then I have to ask how well Tango’s games usually do in Japan. Did Ghostwire Tokyo and Psycho Break /The Evil Within do well there?

Maybe I’ll be proven wrong in the end but as of now I remain skeptical of HFR doing any significant numbers on PS5.

I think you’re probably right. It’ll be interesting to see what happens. We know that games that have timed exclusivity rarely make a big dent once they’re released elsewhere, and I expect HFR and Pentiment to follow the same pattern.

I even wonder if this move will end in a net positive - I get the feeling that it’s a cloud hanging over Xbox now. As to whether that’s something the average consumer will recognise is something else, but it seems that they’ve risked diminishing the brand for what will be a relatively low chance of noteworthy success - unless these 4 games are the herald for more releases.

Unsure, how valid Playstation app is, but in the more-orders best sellers Hi-Fi Rush is ahead of Rise of Ronin and Dragon’s Dogma base game. If that’s true, then game should have at least decent sales on PS5

Maybe, I’m not sure if it’s showing things in order on my app (and this may be region specific) but I’ve got two versions of ROTR and Dragon’s Dogma ahead of HFR, and I would expect that the numbers drop quite dramatically from the top spots. But HFR is there in the top 20, we shall see!
