I’m talking about even selling the piece of hardware, I know discs are relics. Anyway, the thing is this “growing at large spectrum” strategy is fundamentally flawed imo, because the areas they want to push are mount everest: pc, Steam is the mountain, cloud, their offer is simply put bad in 2024, it was good in 2021, mobile, Apple is going to resist to the death, while console, where you can see Sony struggling, they are not even puttin up a fight and this thing confounds me.
“not even putting up a fight”, they’re spending hand over fist and have now grown their employee count to be 4 times bigger than it was a few months ago. They’re not “fighting” how you want. They are more committed to video games than ever, and that cannot be argued.
Going into next gen people will have the ability to choose a console with the largest first party organization (by far) and games going to Game Pass Day 1 as a result or one where some of the same games might come 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 years (or never) to other consoles.
If you want to play Xbox games it’s a easy choice IMO, even easier if you enjoy Game Pass.
Then they are bad fighters, like Franks vs Vikings in the midgle age, because since a couple of years the console business is not good (numbers are undeniable) and considering it was actually good before, I wonder what changed.
They just made more money than ever, it IS good business for them. The console/game market has stopped growing like it was during Covid and they’re still either gaining or maintaining in key areas. You focus entirely on hardware sales, ignoring all other important metrics because it doesn’t feed your anger.
The person I replied to was specifically talking about a scenario where all Xbox games were also released on PS.
They lost the worst generation to lose and chose to compete in their own way, including giving people access to their content and services without the need to own a console. They pivoted the strategy to leverage their strengths.
Its clear to me some of you dudes had this reaction when they announced PC Day 1 back in the day.
I know that, I also know those “more money than ever” come from mergers, which is a strategy, I don’t deny it, but the key element is that hardware is the main driver for subs and spending, or am I wrong? Why Xbox can’t have a console audience, let’s say 360 size (I’m not dreaming about 100M, because they don’t even sell the thing in large areas of the world), wouldn’t be healthier for the business overall? But here their moves go the opposite direction, trying to catch at impossible audiences (pc guys, average guy with gigabit internet and Samsung smart tv post 2021 for example).
PS: anger is a bit too much, if you notice I didn’t freak about selling my console, I’m perplexed and confounded by their ever changing tune in strategy and statements
Not really, for starter I always knew pc crows is different than console crowd and the few you lost are less than the pc engagement, then I believe the Phil.quote about the lost generation is both true and convenient to say. True because of digital library, convenient because average guy buy 1-2 games at year and never replays them, I personally sold the XSX to ps4 people, so it’s only real for hardcores imo.
No, it wouldn’t be healthier because it’s not the same industry. They were doing everything they could to gain a foothold in consoles with the 360. Carried in large part by the PS3’s massive failures. Financially they are so much more successful now, pre-ABK even, than they ever were then. Rose tinted glasses make people think the 360 gen was far more successful for them than it actually was. Either you can accept what the gaming industry is now or you can’t, but their strategy isn’t going to change & we’ll see Sony adopts their “be everywhere you can” approach over time.
I refuse to do this all day, and you guys should as well. It’s not healthy, so behave.
My day off, gonna play some video games. Some good ones hit recently.
I mean, it’s normal discussion, I don’t see particlar drama.
Concluding our exchange, I disagree with your assessment of 360 gen, because, yes, industry was different and number were much smaller, but Xbox was the top dog and then screwed up (and being first against third matters), it’s not like things happened for destiny. Sony is not screwing up like PS3, but if you knew PS5&PSN prices in EU (one example among many), you’ll knew there is room to growth, if they actually bother to try. So, yes, it’s a precise strategy, but people can disagree with it, because outside unpredictable changes, console still remain their main asset, without it Xbox doesn’t exist, period.
Think I heard something about a big new title hitting game pass today
You’re completely ignoring how it is more difficult to move customers across ecosystem now due to people wanting to bring their libraries forward.
Microsoft doesn’t know how to advertise Xbox consoles at all, that’s true, but I think the commitment to the hardware has been demonstrated. Phil Spencer, Sarah Bond and the team are doing a lot to bring more and more games to Xbox. Thanks to them we have Yakuza, Persona, Kingdom Hearts and Square Enix games are finally returning to Xbox. I don’t doubt their commitment to Xbox as hardware (at least for now), what is worrying is this strategy of supporting competing platforms too.
I just wrote some post ago that most people, average gamers, don’t really care about the 6-7 games outside fifa/cod they bought in the last 5-6 years, I know because I sold XSX to 3 former PS4 guys, average customers, not hardcores. I only needed to expain what GP is, another decade old Xbox issue, consumer awareness.
This is going to dominate conversation unfortunately. Moreso than the big games xbox has coming down the pike this year. One of the reasons I dismissed this as FUD originally because the timing of the leak. Had this not been leaked we’d likely still be talking about Indy and Hellblade 2 or just Palworld. This just happened to drop right before their developer direct. coincidence, maybe.
If you hate this conversation now, assuming they’re going through with this when they officially announce it the discourse will be infinitely worse. Leading into the State of Play , you already had gaming media and “gaming Youtubers” tweeting about SOT and HFR showing up there for engagement. So yeah , MS couldn’t have chosen a worse time to show their asses. (again if they actually go through with this)
I still don’t see the logic in this when COD literally prints money but I am through getting bent out of shape on hypotheticals. I’ve been playing the challenge modes on Sifu lately and they’re fun as hell , not to mention Persona 3 just dropped and I am thinking of shelving P5 Royal for now to play it and just go back to it when I’m done.
I see this a lot, but is it really that different? If you owned 400 physical Xbox 360 games but moved to PS4, how many of those could you bring with you?
I’m not sure this is a new thing.
Even if they don’t actively play them, I think there are emotions at play that make people not want to lose access to what they’ve purchased. If people didn’t care about bringing their library forward then if something goes wrong with Xbox yall can just switch to Playstation lol
I’m no average gamer, I own 1-200 Xbox games, I mean.
Average guy buys 1-2 games at year including cod/fifa (or both lol), you can convince them 100%. Maybe putting cod on gp and let people know it.
