Starfield |OT| You're Finally Awake... In Space!

Home life has been too busy to play much. At this rate this will be the only game I play for the next 5 years lol. I have wanted to get back into it. My short played like 8 hour review so far.

Pros:

  • Writing seems better than Fallout 4 so far.
  • The art direction is simply wonderful
  • Gunplay is the best its been
  • So much detail with all the different items and set pieces

Cons:

  • Loading screens everywhere, nothing is seamless
  • The menu is just absolutely awful to navigate and use, which is magnified with how much time you spend in it
  • Too many ammo types, ammo doesn’t seem abundant either…just gotta constantly buy ammo
  • Missing the thrill of exploration for me so far
  • UX is very busy
  • Everything to do with the space ship (outside design) is just a let down

This definitely doesn’t quite feel like the game they sold me in that extended look but I am still enjoying it…when I am not in menus or my spaceship. I keep hearing how great the later quests are and I am excited to explore that.

What this a thing in Fallout? I only played 76 for a bit. The ammo situation for lasers and particle beams in Starfield is solid (iirc there are two types of ammo for each), but the huge variety of ballistic ammo types is a bit much. Although, I appreciate that old Earth weapons require specialized ammo types that are more rare (for lore reasons). I want to use an AK47 all of the time, but the ammo is just too scarce.

That’s actually cool and hilarious.

I didn’t notice it as much in fallout. I went Ballistic and its like oh I found 4 different pistols that all use different ammo but the only ammo I find is for this other gun but not enough. Oh now I am completely out of ammo and have to either leave the planet to buy some OR just use whatever crap gone this random mob has cause it uses the ammo they are dropping.

I understand the rare weapons have scarce ammo but I am early in the game and have to constantly use different guns that I don’t even like just to have ammo. I spent literally all my money the last time I played on ammo for the guns I actually liked cause it was getting frustrating. Especially cause I ENJOY the gun play.

I also enjoy the gunplay a lot. I’ve been avoiding buying ammo because it’s too expensive imo. Mobs use certain ammo types way more than others, so I try to always carry some guns that accept those types. For example, I’ve gathered a huge store of ammo for the Orion laser rifle, the Lawgiver? (takes .50 cal iirc), and the Grendel. Imo this issue can be solved by just making ammo super abundant and dirt cheap from vendors. Yeah it sucks to be unable to use your favorite weapon. Maybe keep heavy weapon ammo scarce though. My grenade launcher is OP.

Absolutely. But like, I have a rifle I like but I would land on a planet and I would be out of ammo quick. I guess it forces you to try different guns but like…then I have to GO BACK INTO THE CRAP MENUS. The ammo issue just makes me have to spend more time in the part of the game I dislike lol. IF mods come to Xbox I hope one of the first is just doubling ammo drops.

Are you not assigning weapons to the quick selector so you can switch them using the D-pad?

I’m playing on hard and I have ammo coming out the ass to the point it’s made the game too easy, if you spend anytime exploring POIs you’ll never, ever have to purchase any ammo whatsoever

I agree on the menu’s, it feels like there’s too many to navigate and it just feels too clunky doing all of it

I disagree about what they sold people though, it’s exactly what they showed us, people just let their imaginations get the better of them including myself to an extent

For me it’s a great game that could/will be an amazing game once more content/updates are added and mechanics are tweaked, whether that’s by Bethesda themselves or modders

Sounds more like a you-problem though. Have a couple of different guns, assign them to the quickmenu, pick up ammo everywhere, even invest in the scavenger skill.

I have no issues with ammo.

Maybe it’s just cause I’m early on. I’ve seen a bunch of people complain about it as well so it’s not just a me problem but probably not a huge deal.

For me buying ammo is a godsend because I don’t want to sell my stuff at every vendor because they are so low on money.

Yeah, I can guarantee you ammo will not be an issue, especially if you do the above.

My overarching thought so far is that the game COULD be great. I don’t hate the loading screens landing on the planet but needing one to go into a building or something just feels so dated. The user interface is an abomination and I can’t believe that even after all the delays they said ā€œthis is fineā€.

It’s just annoying that the actual gameplay and story itself is good but there is so much in the way of getting to that.

And yeah I think people’s imaginations go the better of them but that was on Bethesda a little bit too.

That and space exploration being non existent and space combat being really just not fun either is a let down.

If I would have to spend 5 minutes every time I land on or take off from a planet I would not still be playing.

Most loading screens are a couple of seconds. Any animation you put in there would take longer or flash by in an instant looking dumb.

Unless the game has Souls in the title of course, then it’s all good when mechanics aren’t explained in-game and the player has to figure stuff out on their own.

Haha yes. Not that they can handle those games either, but then suddenly that doesn’t matter.

Like I said I don’t mind the ones to go from space to the planet. I just hate how many loading screens there are in cities and stuff. Entering a small building? Loading screen. Outside of space combat, flying your ship is pointless and that’s a bummer. The excitement of Fallout and Skyrims exploration was finding things while walking from place to place. With Starfield being so big and space being so empty etc, the game is objectively better fast travelling everywhere, so it definitely seems to be missing that fun but that’s to be expected moving to this scale so it’s mostly just misplaced expectations.

It’s weird the more I play the more I can see why people love it, but I can also see why the ign guy and others didn’t.

There’s plenty of loading in Skyrim though?

I find things all the time in Starfield, it’s just bigger distances and scale. It’s not the same games.

I know, which is why I said it’s a bit of misplaced expectations. I was so incredibly excited after their gameplay showcase but actually playing it hasn’t felt as wow as it did then. Maybe when the story opens up more I will enjoy it or maybe unlike the rest of their output it’s just not a game for me. Which is fine too. I can just now see why not everyone or every outlet (except the obvious biased ones) don’t see this game as amazing.

It’s about the same, there are a lot of ammo types because that’s just how the world works(our world as well) when they have so many different guns.

One thing I hope can be done to mitigate this in the future, is allow for ammo type change for all weapons, that way we could just make every ballistic weapon use the same ammo type and focus on only that one.
