Sony PlayStation lays off 900, around 8% cut, and shuts down studio(s) [2024-02-27]

This game in the works for years, made alongside a tv show had no actual work put in? :billed_cap:

Watch it will be the same with Gravity Rush with the film coming out yet no new game.

oh they had put work in it. Playstation just cancelled it before giving it the green light for full production, the stage where the real money is burned.

Nintendo cancels POCs all the time. They do not fire people as a consequence.

If this was posted by an X MS employee it would be getting RT by every major outlet and influencer

Wasnt that successful in the grand scheme of things. Ps games dont sell the numbers of a major 1st party nintendo gsme despite 4x the budget.

Because they dont need to

Their ROI for their lazy wii u ports means theyll never need to cut costs on layoffs.

Now layoffs orobably happen at nintendo on a tiny scale.

All I have is that this news sucks and in no way shape or form makes Microsofts layoffs anything to take some sort of perspective from.

They both suck and need to start expanding into mobile more to try and grow their business if the excuse is that the gaming industry didn’t grow enough. Microsoft needs to suck it up and share the wealth with Apple and Google, or make that multi device store they have in mind a priority.

Sorry what do you mean? It’s Google and Apple preventing Xbox having a mobile store not the other way around.

They want their own store, but if that’s not happening without the government intervention. They need to suck it up and start making a bigger push into mobile gaming, what they have there already is good, but it’s not enough.

Apple wants MS to debuddle all games from cloud into separate apps. How exactly is that workable for MS and it’s customers?

900 people without caring that they are “the leader of the industry”, and that photo of Jim with the London team, fucking disgusting

That and the fees they want are ridiculous, especially the new ones they have proposed to EU regulators, I can’t remember the exact details but I think it was a €0.50 fee to Apple for every single user, every single year.

Ah I see, I think the only viable way is if the regulators do actually step in.

Fanboys are horrible, just remember that equally shitty comments were made when the Sony Japan Studio (“who the f cares!” “all they made were flops! lol” e.t.c.) closed…that otherera thread was really disgusting.

To me it’s pretty clear what direction the game industry is going. It’s heading to the Hollywood model. Before the 50’s the movie studios employed basically everyone that made a movie, down to the people that sowed the buttons on costumes. Now everyone is an indie contractor, but the studio’s own the IP. Spielberg or Nolan are not employee’s of a movie studio. They have made movies for multiple studios. MS is pretty close to doing this model now. I believe they will move closer to this model first and people with give them hell for it but sony will eventually follow. I’m not saying this model is good or bad but it will eventually happen.

One thing I noticed that both Xbox and PS (and probably others as well) have said in their layoff reasonings that they need to be “sustainable”.

Could be PR speak or it could be them officially admitting that AAA model has finally gotten out of hand. imo that happened several years ago.
