It’s typically Sony to do that. FromSoftware is well beloved nowadays and it would really strengthen their brand.
And even though for Xbox there’s no red line, that doesn’t mean a new Spyro or any other new ABK or Bethesda will be day and date for other platforms, which IMO is wise, test the waters and don’t go too wild with it yet.
Yeah, me too. I definitely see how great From is, their track record, how fast they bring games and reliability, but I’m honestly over Souls games. Still have no desire to buy Elden Ring either. But there are plenty Xbox only players that do still enjoy this, it would really suck if they need to get a PS system for that now.
Spike though, if they lock that down, that would suck too, I really enjoyed the first AI game.
I would think the precedents set in the ABK trials should give this one a window for objections from MS and Nintendo… If and if Sony intend to make game exclusivity from this, first of all FromSoft themselves might object internally to limiting their game’s platforms, and that can get into account, and then MS and Nintendo as regards to excluding established games from their platforms, can be compared to ABK & even Bethesda games now.
Seems like a good opportunity and fit for Sony. I doubt they mess with day one PC releases, but less certain about how this would impact Xbox and Nintendo.
I can’t help but think that if Xbox does make their next console the equivalent of a gaming PC, with the ability to access different stores such as Epic and Steam, then there’s no need for concern. And with so many games prioritizing PC or mobile first these days I feel like Xbox should figure out how to make their next console more like a PC anyway.
As for how Xbox reacts in terms of their own M&A, Spencer said a long time ago that he wanted more Asian development in the Xbox portfolio. He thinks years ahead, so it’s a matter of when they find the right fit. I imagine it will be a mobile play first and foremost.
Definitely seems more like a grab for multimedia repurposing. The 2 big pieces that Kadokawa has as far as gaming are From Soft and Spike Chun, which I could definitely see them locking those 2 in to be Playstation exclusives. I definitely say they want all them anime perks that come with it the most.
Definitely prefer Bethesda (pre and post Tango) over Kadokawa and I even prefer ABK over Kadokawa because even though they release a game every few years outside of COD annually, it’s more games that I am or could be interested in than Kadokawa which is literally zero.
Anyway, im going to predict right now that if/when Sony acquires Kadokawa, that every game will be multi-platform ala Bungie.
It’ll be a shame if Sony locks down From, but it’ll be interesting to see how the internet reacts if they do. Actually it’ll still be interesting to see the reaction if Sony “goes multiplat” and doesn’t lock them down. This will also end up helping Xbox politically and with their messaging. Can’t stop MS from locking away games if Sony does it, no government regulators and no internet backlash. On the flip side, if Sony “goes mulitplat” nobody can question Xbox doing it.
I don’t see Sony going multiplat. The only one really doing is Microsoft. I do expect Sony to lock all from software stuff down. Just blessed remaster bloodbourne
What do you mean? Sony Group, the parent company, already are multiplatform. Looking at all the division they own, they already release games on Windows PC, Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS platforms.
The point being it really depends on how any possible acquisition is structured. If they place them under where Aniplex is, they will continue releasing multiplatform games.
I’m not too sure. The cost to buy Kadokawa is going to be based on multiplatform sales/profits and if you take that away after purchase you de-value them right from the get go. Now I see the old fanboy rhetoric “Well Xbox owners don’t play these games anyway” as justification to why they would stop putting games on Xbox, then in the same breath act like a bunch of Xbox users are going to flee the platform and buy a PS to play the games they never played in the first place. Can’t have it both ways, either there are users to “steal” or there aren’t. Loss of games on Xbox isn’t going to transfer over 100% to PS.
As it was when Xbox bought Bethesda and ABK, this is different than buying game exclusivity. When Sony buys Final Fantasy exclusivity they don’t own SE so they don’t have to care if the FF franchise and SE goes down in flames. Sony just banks the extra console sales and hype while the franchise suffers. If Sony actually owned SE the decision to hobble the franchise would be a much tougher decision.
People still doing the “expecting Sony not to do the thing they’re already doing” gaslighting? Really? After we just had Lego Horizon and Death Stranding release on consoles not in the PlayStation ecosystem
Agree with you both, people forget Aniplex / Sony Music where for some reason Sony publish and develop games in addition to SIE, but mostly for Switch, that rarely come to PlayStation.
So if the acquisition is led by that area and they don’t split the dev studios off, by default it’s not the PlayStation management that gets to make the call, and generally upper management like money lol.
Or if they choose not to make them full first party like Bungie, knowing that to lose Xbox / Switch sales (particularly Spike for the latter) would impact the value of their new asset at a time the stock market isn’t liking their profit margins.
I guess it’s possible that Sony continues to pull its console warring bullshit where it loves to stir up its fanbase (“we believe in generations”, “subscription services can’t support games of our quality”) to shore them up (as anyone but the fanatics are fed up with little first party pipeline announced and the silly pricing / nickel and diming) by excluding Xbox but still allowing Switch ports.
But anyone cheering that would be foolish, as the only way it wouldn’t be completely stupid would be to massively increase the profitability of From - so Elden Ring would have been a £70 release and Shadow of the Ertree would’ve been a standalone game probably at £70 too…
Kind of interesting from the aspect that some companies usually have a Poison Pill clause which grants them the ability to infinitely issue additional stock shares to prevent hostile takeovers.
