I’m all for Sony picking up devs where it fits, and even a publisher should the need and opportunity to arise, but there’s no reality where Microsoft can pay $69 billion in cash and we just expect Sony to be able to take on the debt to supplement the little remaining cash assets to match and exceed. If the deal came down to who could pay more, the answer is obvious.
I’ve always tried to remind people that Sony is a fiscally-conservative company when it comes to actually taking on additional loans.
I agree, I believe Sony will continue to make gaming acquisitions, but going off what their stated goals are they are not interested in any publishers (they can’t really afford the vast majority of them). What’s far more likely is them buying studios that they believe can make a successful GAAS titles, which there are decent amount of.
People need to stop overrating Sony’s spending power while underrating pretty much every other big player in the industry (not even counting MS).
Absolutely, it’s served them well, especially after 2008 when they were hit extremely hard. It’s commendable especially when you consider other Japanese tech giants that have fallen to the way side or forced to merge with competitors.
I’ve also long said that, unless things drastically change, Sony doesn’t need an additional publisher and some of their best pickups have been those they’ve worked exclusively with for years. Honestly, Sony’s been doing what I wished Nintendo would have done for years.
I have maintained a pretty similar position. Sony (PlayStation specifically) just needs to keep doing what they do and they will be more than fine. Trying to fight giants on their battlefield is a recipe for disaster.
I don’t want to concern troll, but one thing I’ve been wondering is with Sony acquiring all of these studios creating live service games. What will happen to these studios if these live service games aren’t hits?
Agreed. This is great news. It means the PlayStation Showcase doesn’t have to cut or hide any games because they’re full or timed exclusive to PlayStation.
True, it’s an interesting gamble because I think at least 2 of them might make a hit, but others might not. Very intrigued to see what these studios create
