So based on this video (and I know, MLID isn’t always right but let’s say he is here). At the beginning of the video, he says he’s been able to confirm that the Magnus codename would indeed be an Xbox console SOC, with the product coming out fairly soon (2027) considering the technology this is based of (Zen 6) and it only has 8 more CUs than the PS5 Pro so he thinks it wouldn’t be a huge jump over the PS5 Pro, or at least, not as huge as we’ve seen between PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.
He does go on about PS6 and PS6 Handheld later on in the video being released later with what I understand to be a more value proposition like the PS4 with better than PS5 Pro capabilities. It talks about Zen 6 cores and Navi 5 as the GPU so it seems on par at least in terms of generations to what MS would be planning from what I can understand, but looking at the specs he has it seems to be a lot less beefy than what MS is planning (40 to 48CUs vs 68CUs), but he also says AMD was trying to convince to share dies with the desktop variant (like Magnus) so it is also possible that it could end up with a very similar design in the end to MS’, at which point I guess the main differentiators would be stuff like RAM for example like we’ve seen this gen along with the NPU maybe or SSD, etc. MLID thinks using the same variants would obviously help economies of scale and drive prices down which is probably why AMD wants this.
The PS6 handheld is interesting as well as it’ll have a lot less CPU cores and CUs, which I do wonder how it will affect PS5 BC. It apparently would have the rasterization of approximately half the PS5.
I do wonder what we’ll end up getting because MS seems intent on making a beast according to Sarah Bond’s comments, yet Sony seems to be (according to MLID’s documents) heavily focused on making a cheap console to build to get more adoption considering the switch from PS4 to PS5 was slower than anticipated. And I do wonder what consumer reactions we’d get if one does end up considerably more expensive than the other considering the current worldwide situation and people being tight on cash. Or will MS have another system again this time around at a lower cost that we do not know about?
Next-Gen consoles will NOT be inexpensive, even with the rumored lowered specs. All of these are using an even more expensive process node than what’s used today.
Yeah, the moment I saw it was MLID, I threw everything out the window. Dude is just a grifter with no real sources, and every time he gets something wrong he just deletes his old videos (there’s a Reddit archive of them specifically because people try and use him lately to console war).
I call BS. At this point 2027 is just way too far in my opinion. I struggle to find reasons why they would wait that long. Current generation is stagnant with console sales and much of that is self inflicted. You could make the argument they aren’t trying very hard to sell current gen systems because the next console is right around the corner.
May 2026 - Nov 2026 is a far more logical time frame given all the moving pieces pointing in that direction.
And I mean…the PS5 pro only has 8 more CUs than a Series X. So is the PS5 Pro just meh too? (this is rhteorical, the answer is yes) Im sure that is how he sold it in his grift videos.
I find the allusion that using the PS6 handheld in a TV box to lower prices to be interesting. What if this gen and next gen just coexist for the sake of userbase and that ‘‘mini-PS6’’ aka next gen Vita TV is basically a PS5 light at 1080p for an incredibly low price, I could see that being their ‘‘100$ PS2 Moment’’ and really selling in droves. While I don’t know if Sony would make that happen, I could definitely see that as the ultimate casuals console.
While I wouldn’t be against a 2026 launch, I do know a lot of people strapped for cash and not willing to upgrade this early. One thing I do wonder is though, is how much of a jump over PS5 Pro would that bring? Unless they are able to bring much more powerful hardware this early with an insane early adopter price, but I just wonder how well that would do for them. Unless of course they keep the Series gen hardware on sale as the low end entry point.
It will be a new console that is compatible with the old generation hardware. The Series S and X will be retired but still very relevant in compatibility. The whole point of a 2026 Xbox console is to move to Windows based O/S. The spec isn’t something they will wait for because well it’s a PC. They can essentially upgrade it yearly if they want to. I don’t pretend to be an insider or anything… just seems to be where it’s all heading. I say just time it with GTA 6 and call it a day. The big leap is the new Xbox PC O/S not so much the hardware.
So rumors are coming in. What do you guys want in next gen consoles?
I want a premium console from xbox at the level of 4090 or 5080 gpu and to be priced around $1000
Plus a hybrid handheld and dockable. In handheld mode it will be equivalent to Series S and run series S BC games. In docked mode it will be equivalent to series X and run series X BC games. To be priced around $450 to $550 for handheld and w/ dock respectively. Plus little better due to advanced technologies. Will use Lpddr6 VRAM to save on energy.
That would be nice. Definitely hope for a big spec increase. Moving towards PC though, they will keep a long cross generational limit on games for years to come. The new console will get you improved graphics and I’m all for it. Most gamers however will probably be fine playing the cross gen Xbox Series X and S version.
Right. It just makes too much sense. Not to mention GTA isn’t coming to Steam immediately. You could really sell every console you manufactured in that scenario.
With Xbox seemingly being decoupled from console sales numbers, I’d guess that they are going to go for an ultra expensive and powerful console. Now it could just be that giving up on console sales is just temporary for this gen though.
They have that 5 billion yearly Gamepass dollars coming in with the bulk of that being console users. I’m guessing they can’t just go for ultra expensive hardware without risking alienating part of those users and that revenue stream at the same time.
The thing is people expect them to be all super expensive and go PC like, but then their whole strategy with Gamepass is value proposition and value for gamers, which doesn’t mix well imo with ultra expensive. Add to that some of the worse timing to go expensive due to the economy and it feels like it would be a very bad read on gamers.
Unless of course they have more planned and we just haven’t heard about it yet. Just like I think Series S was kept close to their chest until the last minute.
