I’m quite impartial with the whole “zapping your conscious into a computer to play a game thing”. We’re far out from that future ever becoming a reality, but it does make for good entertainment. ‘Dot Hack’ comes to mind and for the younger generation, ‘Sword Art Online’, which started out as a battle royale of sorts and has long since shed that narrative arc, jumping between multiple online games and having its cast explode tenfold over the last decade plus.

It is here that we finally arrive at ‘SWORD ART ONLINE Last Recollection, developed by AQURIA Co., Ltd. and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, continuing the story from the previous Alicization arc and acts as a ‘what-if’ to the events of the manga and anime. The ‘jack-of-all-trades’ Kirito and his band of friends are at the brink of war with the ‘Dark Territory’, a place of potential unimaginable horrors—and right then and there, at the brink of the border, a Dark Knight and a little girl fall from the sky.

A few yipyaps laters, the group ventures with their two news friends into the Dark Territory alone, complete with a rather fun combat system that I liken to a modern day Dot Hack (and maybe a bit of ‘Phantasy Star’).

Last Recollection is an action role-playing game with a good amount of weapon diversity, skill set ups, and many, many party members to choose from to accompany you. You can choose from the likes of bows, swords, whips, fists, you name it—and they all have their own skill trees where you can gain new skills and upgrade existing ones for additional stats and passives. You can map four skills to a grid alongside four abilities which can be used for heals, buffs, and debuffs. These grids can also be saved away in case you ever want to switch up your pallate.

You’ll need a good number of skills and proper gear for you and your party if you plan on taking on larger groups of enemies or higher ranked ones that sit idly out in the Dark Territory. In true MMO-fashion, these baddies huddle in circles and wait for you to walk past before latching onto you with bright red arrows indicating enmity. You can also pull enemies your way by throwing something at them, which I appreciate—sometimes I simply do not want to aggro the entire continent to fight one particular baddie.

Now when you do get into the gritty of things, the combat is pretty fun. Besides the afformentioned party setups, you’ll be alternating between skills, your regular attacks, managing other allies’ skill usage, and even switching between your ‘partner’ party member for a special attack. Skills can be chained to other skills by timing their ending frames into the next, parrying and dodging gives slowdown and the potential to throw an enemy off-guard. Chain the right attacks and you’ll even pull off a special move. Really, there’s a lot of ways to take on combat in this game and I enjoyed that.

When I mentioned that this game reminded me of Dot Hack, that’s because it more or less plays like a modern rendition of the G.U. trilogy. Movement is generally fluid, though you can be locked into long attacks depending on your weapon type. Interacting with the world revolves around beating up monsters near treasure chests, using special magics found in the overworld to clear obstacles, or being able to access specific areas once you’ve started a quest that can be found in that specific area.

But other than that, the Dark Territory doesn’t really leave much in the way of exploration. Nor the imagination. For the bright blue sky and green grass the human world had in the last game, the Dark Territory is nothing but sand, lava, and dark red skies. The game’s visual style isn’t all that great; I found the character shading to clash with the low-resolution textures and lighting that makes everything look flat and dull. This impacts signposting quite a bit too—mixed in with dull level design, you’ll find yourself wandering aimlessly at times trying to figure out what you wanted to do or where you wanted to go next. But even worse is finding a road that leads right into an invisible wall.

Speaking of a lack of readability, the user interface is cluttered and this is noticeable especially during combat. And it’s not the sort of manageable MMO-style interface you might be familiar with—it’s a series of skills, bars, enemy actions, and a weird-looking combo meter with a typefacing that is alien to how the rest of the game looks. Outside of combat the UX is fine, though for questing it’s not all too great. See, quest design in this game rarely points you to what you need to find, instead it asks the player to read what the quest giver has to say and figure out what or where they need to go on their information alone.

I actually don’t mind this sort of questing—I really like it when games give enough information to go off of and let me do my own thing to sort out objectives. But Last Recollection forgets the part where its supposed to give you hints on where objectives could be. As I mentioned before, a lack of notable landmarks and poor visuals means you’ll often be running around zones for quite a while trying to find a shiny red spot to interact with. Still, these sidequests do open up extra parts of the map at times and I ultimately did enjoy doing them.

Last Recollection’s story is told through plenty of cutscenes and flashbacks. It’s nothing to write home about, I could liken it to a spinoff anime movie. Fans of Sword Art Online’s characters can play as them and get the occasional cutscene with Kirito about how things are going. Speaking of the cutscenes, they’re not long but the load times between them sometimes take a lot longer than they should. It’s more annoying when the game chains multiple cutscenes in a row, or has you walk mere meters before throwing you into another loading screen.

  • User interface is clumsy and impacts just about everything.
  • Art and technical direction leaves dull colours and flat lighting in its wake.
  • Level design is small little zones with poor signposting and a lot of roads that lead to invisible walls.

As for the story beats, Kirito is still the same little baby-faced sigma you’ve come to know and love. Foes fall to his feet, people of all genders swoon before our knight in shining armour, he’s everyone’s favourite powerhouse. Now believe it or not, I actually don’t mind power fantasies. The problem with such a character is that they end up overtaking the presence of just about every other character—particularly the Dark Knight’s where the game tries to limelight her but Kirito is just too good. But hey, he’s trying to be the nice guy and the overarching narrative is all about wanting the best for everyone and I can’t say I don’t like that sorta stuff.

Sword Art Online: Last Recollection is one of the better games in the franchise’s history. The combat mechanics are solid and questing can be fun, plus it’s good fan service. It’s a bit of a shame every other aspect drags the game down, but that won’t stop you from enjoying Last Recollection especially if you’re looking for a simple, single-player MMO-style experience. ∎
