Isn’t this more of an Unreal engine 4 problem. I remember Days Gone on the PS4 had the exact same issues so did State of Decay.
The Coalition certainly seems to have their hands full with trying to help almost every studio.
I think so. UE4 has the texture issue.
Xbox need to send this guy a code for whatever game in the future for review. He actually put in the time to 100% games before he review them. He is probably the only guy that goes through the effort to do this. He also gets all achievements to. One of the few truly trust worthy review. I agree with many of the things he said, unlike them other reviewers that put in like 2-5 hours and act like they know it all, and call the game a catastrophe.
XboxEra always completes the games they review when possible, and if they dont they are sure to mention it in the review such as the Persona title. Even with that, they put in as much time in the game as possible. I think Jesse had over 17 hours when he completed Redfall and all side missions for the review. Yesterday he had over 40 hours on Redfall as he continued playing it in the evenings with others.
So all that is to say that you can trust the XboxEra reviews.
It’s great that there are people who go to the effort of 100%ing something and provide their insights into it but that doesn’t necessarily represent the average experience with a game and I’d argue there’s some games where you really shouldn’t try to 100% it if you want the best possible experience. Take Forza Horizon for example, those games have a mountain of content to cater to any kind of playstyle. I’ve always felt the intent was to allow people to simple play the content they want to play rather than actually expecting anyone to do absolutely everything.
Was not talking Jess. Was talking about them other reviewers. With their click bait stuff, like… Redfall worst game in 2023, Redfall is a catastrophe, blah blah blah. Them are the people i’m talking about.
100% games, then reviews is something he does to separate himself from everyone else. It’s something that i truly respect as a gamer to another. I know i won’t 100% Redfall, i will beat the story, but will never 100% it. The guy has my respect though, it’s why i respect his review opinion more then others.
I’m about 10 hours in so far. I am in the second area. I’m having a great time. It is scratching that Far Cry itch.
What I will say, I’ve not encountered any issues. I get the odd texture load when fast travelling to a location, but that is common in a lot of games. I am playing Solo, so there might be loads of issues on co-op that I just haven’t been exposed to.
I just think it’s a travesty that Arkane Austin is being attacked. Game is fun, but the discourse around it will cause people not even to try it.
Yeah, I got what you were going for. I still wanted to put that out there for the haters and lurkers.
I think you guys were a bit generous with the review score (but it reads well). That being said I also think people (not here) are dunking WAY too much on Arkane and the team for this given their pedigree.
I’m going to wait for patching and updates before I dive in with my son on co-op. There’s a gem here that needs polishing.
I think the 4 character choice was a mistake, I get it for the coop but having 3 powers for each character makes the combat and choice extremely limited if you’re playing single player
It still wouldn’t offer what I’d want creativity wise from an Arkane title but having one single character that had to choose between 12 powers and mixing and matching throughout the campaign would be way more interesting than the 3 baseline ones
Also, one major sin this game commits is having a character with telekinesis abilities and endless barrels, petrol cans and junk lying around in the world but I can’t pick it up and haul them at enemies? Obviously game balance has to be considered but to me it’s another example of Arkane design just being missing and the dynamic gameplay that lets you play exactly how you want to play and be creative in an Arkane game is almost completely lost in this
Also what on earth were they thinking making it so you have to switch through 3 different weapons with Y instead of making some sort of quick change/weapon wheel
There’s so many aspects to this game where it feels like something in beta because of simple design choices that are just plain missing and havn’t been added in yet
How so? I’m not going to play this, so I already looked up what the second region’s map looks like. I’m curious why it is better. Thanks.
Agreed. My rating system is very similar to yours -
- 0 - Abysmal
- 1 - Awful
- 2 - Bad
- 3 - Poor
- 4 - Below Average
- 5 - Average
- 6 - Above Average
- 7 - Good
- 8 - Great
- 9 - Excellent
- 10 - Superb
I do rate my completed games in four categories - visuals, audio, gameplay/combat and story/characters. Then all four give me the overall rating. I use half point increments (7.0, 7.5, 8.0, 8.5, etc.) for each category. When a category or overall rating includes a half point increment such as 7.5, it’s because I see that category or overall rating as better than just good (7.0) but isn’t great (8.0) so I rate it in the middle.
In all honesty, I would have Arkane Austin get the game in a great state, add the 60FPS option and include the two extra playable characters. I would have this done by the Fall. Then, it’s vacation time for the studio and after New Year’s, they come back and start working on their next game. I know Phil said that they let the studios create what they want and I agree with that but at the same time, why not go back to a successful franchise critic wise to get back the positivity for the studio?
Imagine Arkane Lyon working on a new Shadowrun game. Third person action RPG with shooting/melee combat like the SNES Shadowrun game but in 3D and third person. Then Arkane Austin working on Dishonored 3. I mean come on.
I get not dictating what the studios create and develop but I do understand those like me who aren’t exactly happy with that decision. My friend who’s a PlayStation guy looks at the following studios that are favorites of his that are owned by Microsoft -
-
Arkane - He loves Dishonored and wants a third game. He sees Deathloop which he tried and dropped quickly and sees Redfall which he’s not going to waste his time on at all so as of now, they went from a studio he liked a lot to where they’re now in limbo. All comes down to their next game.
-
Rare - He loved back when they were with Nintendo. Since then, they’re shit to him and non-existent. He doesn’t ever see himself playing another Rare game ever again.
-
Tango Gameworks - He loves The Evil Within 1 & 2 (as do I) so to see Ghostwire Tokyo which he knows was finished due to the lady leaving the studio but still, not what he wanted. Hi Fi Rush is a great game and he knows that but he doesn’t care about rhythm based games and while he thinks the game looks really good, that’s not what he’s looking for from Tango. He hopes for TEW 3. Both of us believe that we’re not getting it.
-
Ninja Theory - He loved Hellblade more than I did and is hyped for the sequel but thus far, he’s 0/3 in regards to studios that he likes now releasing games that he simply has no interest in good or bad so after Hellblade 2, he has no clue as to what they will do.
I understand Phil’s standpoint but I also understand my friend’s point of view as I do have a similar view. There’s certain games we (and majority) want from these studios but unlike Sony and Nintendo, the confidence in getting them isn’t there because of how Microsoft gives them the creative freedom which is great and all but in all honesty, there’s some games I want from these studios and not getting them is disappointing.
Also, we don’t want more of these live service co-op/multiplayer games. Like, just make a one and done excellent single player game and then move on to the next game. Third person preferred but we’ll both take a first person single player game over a third person co-op/multiplayer live service game.
These studios should be doing what the majority of their fans want first and foremost. Then, go do something else. If Tango’s next game isn’t TEW 3 and Arkane Lyon/Austin next game isn’t Dishonored 3, it will be a huge disappointment because with Game Pass, this is exactly what they SHOULD be doing because they don’t need to be reliant or dependent on software sales. Give the fans what they want most first and request more times than not and then go do something else.
Just my (and my friend’s) opinion as we’re similar in a lot of ways of what we want from these studios.
I’m playing on easy and finding it tough
Reflexes arent what they used to be (which, lets face it, were never very good)
Agree.
There is no auto aim help like other games. Default settings feels kinda off. I went into settings and turn input to low and sensitivity to high betwen 5.5-6.5, and i find that make my aim better. Maybe try it and see if it improve your aim.
Thanks will give that a go.
I’m 5 missions in and so far so good, definitely will be finishing this game, I’m having a good time. Not normal to have some hiccups on a 5800x/rtx 3080 combo at 1080p but it’s more than playable and the art style/atmosphere is really good. It does lack production value in terms of presentation and cutscenes and the like, you can tell this wasn’t meant to initially be a story driven game.
Had a fellow in the Whirlpool forums (Australian reddit-esque board) say that reviewers 80%+ the game must have some kind of bias, like towards vampires or something. Had to reply that DonC has no bias, is a senior reviewer for XboxEra, and reviewed lots of games.
Majority of Xbox studios are working on single player games.
