Review | Redfall

It a flawed system. To me it makes no sense. I don’t believe they do this in film. Gaming reviews need to change cause right now anything below a 7 is garbage.

It’s really why now, i don’t really give a crap about review score anymore unlike many other people. I just play what i see and like and rarely look at review score.

I think after a few updates, this game will be great. Im having fun with it. Just did the first vamp nest and the looks felt very “Arkanish” for me, idk.

There’s personal preference but there’s also a set of technical & gameplay related elements which mean certain games shouldn’t go above a certain number when they’re below other titles in lots of areas.

Dying Light for example was a 7/10 at release but that game did a lot right. Redfall meanwhile does very little right & whole lot of stuff worse than competitors. So how should it score?

Halo Reach (one of the best shooters ever made) is a 9/10. Games like Dying Light & Atomic Heart are 7/10’s (this is all according to metacritic). So I think Redfall’s ‘final resting place’ is fair tbh. It just wouldn’t be right for games which do a lot of stuff better to not be at least rewarded in some form or another on a review scale.

I’ve only played a couple hours so far, and it’s hard for my opinion not to have been influenced by the overall negative consensus so I have somewhat been expecting the worst rather than going in with a fully open mind. I don’t know though, doesn’t seem great so far. My immediete reaction is that you still have Arkanes brilliant artstyle poking through, just somewhat hampered by missing the layers of technical stuff that usually goes into these games with a lack of shadows and everything making it all look flat. I can see the potential in what they were designing - the small town vibe with the trees bursting with colour all works.

Beyond that the game so far feels somewhat aimless - you just get dropped into the world and left to do…well, I’m not completely sure yet. Find safehouses and the associated missions I guess? There’s a way to make “we’re just gonna drop you into the world and leave you to it” work and this ain’t it. Like I know Ubisoft towers are frowned upon but Redfall seems to be missing that open world structure that makes it all click - such as climbing a tower to see the nearby activities. It doesn’t feel particularly great to play yet either, shooting for example feels like they are missing a lot of the extra bits and pieces that just make it feel good on a console and enemies don’t really seem to do much other than stand around or just run at you.

But i am still very early in the game, it could totally get better with time. And hey, at the very least - you know what? 30fps is fine, it’s surprisingly smooth feeling for 30.

starfield comparisons are so weird… i mean look at the scope and scale of fallout 4 when compared to redfall… you really think these two games are even in the same straosphere? lol

People need to realize nobody is doing this game, xbox as a brand, or the studio that created it any favors by defending it. I’m sorry but for the past two days every time I refresh reddit it’s a different bug on top of my front page, and it’s a different subreddit every time.

I don’t really see anyone defending it

Some people are enjoying it for what it is, some don’t think it’s as bad as some reviewers claim it is but I think everyone agrees it’s below par at the absolute minimum for what Xbox should be pumping out from their first party

I don’t mean people are hailing it as a masterpiece. But trying to counter or minimize any and all problems in this game, big or small, is defending it in my book.

or they just have a different opinion on the game.

I mean, I’m enjoying it for what it is and think it’s fun despite the obvious flaws

I consider Prey a masterpiece and think Arkane are capable of magnitudes better than this but I’m still having fun

Yeah same. The mud and the water tetures are super ugly, and I’ve found a few other things that are annoying but I am (like many) really enjoying the world so far and recommended it to a friend who is also enjoying.

I’m not even gonna try. But again, zero favors.

there is a hyper focus on this title. I had far more bugs/issues with SW Jedi Survivor than I did with Redfall, but the game was better overall and those issues didn’t stop me from having fun thus the higher score.

The biggest thing that communicated how much of a heartbreaking disappointment this was for me is the game’s inability to communicate the narrative through intricate interior and world design – a hallmark staple of nearly every Arkane game since the first Dishonored. Going into bland, textureless houses with vague recollections of someone living here through faint bloodstains or whatever was the majority of the first region. It’s only until the second region is when you start to get interesting design choices with the environment.

An absolute tragedy of a game.

Still I love the setting.

Do you think they would make further adjustments to the game (like enemies having actual AI, difficulty balancing…) or they will release the 60 fps patch and call it a day?

It’s safe to expect QoL improvements, 60 fps, and releasing the Hero Edition content (i.e. two future characters). IMO, I think they will do that and move on.

I’m having fun in Redfall…

12 plus hours into my solo play. All them reviews from youtubers saying it a catastrophe, is just BS. There are issues, but it not a catastrophe.

The game did not crash on me once. There were few bugs and glitches, animation issues, low quality texture, texture not loading in for a bit, and a couple of other issue, but it was nothing major. All of this can be fix with a patch.

Gameplay is still fun. I play on highest difficulty, with headphones on and i heard the voices from the vampires. The sound design/atmosphere is very good. I also challenge myself and try not to use the flashlight and go exploring into dark places/houses. When you get into fights with Angler and Shroud in the pitch dark place and don’t used flashlight make it very fun immersion.

The second region is much more interesting to explore in the first one. I’m having a better experience but not by much.
