Have you tried raising the sensitivity and setting the responsiveness settings to Low? I had to do that for the gunplay to feel good. This isn’t specific to Arkane; I don’t know why but recently developers are making games with default controller settings made for snails.
Just tried this and it feels much better now, thanks
Same! And this morning or I was going to be late for the grind.
Or, (now check this out) OR…maybe theyre telling their truth and it doesn’t speak for everyone. And not everyone is going to agree with the ongoing narrative to “fit in”.
Wild, right??
LMAO no one is trying to “fit in”….goodness.
I get it, some people are going to enjoy it and hey great…that’s cool.
Let’s not act like bad reviews and people who don’t enjoy the game are part of some grand narrative or it’s anything more than what I just said.
I’m glad you enjoy it, I’m not telling you not to…but don’t act like I’m crazy if I don’t.
I actually had a ton of fun playing this last night on my Series X. I love exploring and grabbing loot, and the art style and world is actually cool for me at least even though it isn’t an attempt at “photorealistic visuals”.
I understand much of the criticisms here for sure, and I think that some of this is also that people don’t see this particular game as an “Arkane game”. But after a couple adjustments in the controller settings, I was surprised by how playable the 30 fps was because I have basically transitioned fully to wanting/needing 60 fps or higher this generation. That isn’t to say that I don’t realize any difference and really want the performance mode update for Series X at some point, but this is probably “the best 30 fps” implementation that I personally can recall for this type of game at least.
Jfc, I can’t believe it but we actually agree on something.
I played more of it earlier, was still having a good time.
having fun?
This game is sort of just “fine.” I’ve put about 40 mins into it and cleared the first house and decided go to a downed chopper. Gun play feels fine, but it’s the small stuff around it, not being able to pause a game I’m playing in single player in the year 2023 is asinine. I have two kids and a life, it’s annoying to not be able to pause something.
Looking at the map, it doesn’t seem very big, is the world at least dense? I’m going to continue to play it but it hasn’t captivated me yet. On the other hand I’m loving GHOSTWIRE Tokyo and put about 35’mins into Benedict and enjoying that too.
Sea of thieves was mid 60 at launch and deservedly so. Sea of thieves now is no way near thst launch game. Back then most people i know tjought the game was medicore at launch as i did.
Redfall doesnt have the same content problems soT had. So it may stay mid 60s through its lifetime
Try turning off the aim assist, while not something I have experienced so far, this is an issue I have experience in Halo Infinite in the pass where one person would move to run by and my aim would focus on a new target.
Okay, this game is not good. I am playing on PC and the game looks horrible. It is kind of hard to think that this the output from a microsoft first party exclusive.
I found the gunplay to be very bland and shooting never felt satisfying at any point. For a game built on slaying vampires with guns this felt soo weak.
On top of looking pretty mediocre at best the game performance drops like crazy. I am talking empty looking areas with no much visual flare and only 2 or 3 enemies it drops to 20 frames and it happens constantly.
I uninstalled it and this is by far the weakest Microsoft exclusive I played in a long long long time. I even enjoyed crackdown 3
Yeeeeeaaah. Still enjoying it. Literally have to force myself to put it down and knock out for the night. I did encounter a glitch earlier (vampire floating around that I couldn’t shoot) other than that, I’m having a blast. I love exploring this world!
My enjoyment is derived almost entirely from the fact that I just like walking around looking at things.
I played about three hours of Redfall when I got home from work today. Quick rundown with no story spoilers.
-
Graphically, the game is underwhelming and disappointing, however, the art style, atmosphere and immersion especially early on when the Sun fades away and the world goes dark looks really freaking good. So basically, the art style carries the game. It’s definitely an Arkane looking game.
-
Audio wise, the music is great. It fits the world. The sound effects are all really good. The voice acting is solid. I do like all the sounds of the guns that I used.
-
Gameplay and combat wise, the shooting actually feels better than I was expecting especially at 30FPS. Movement is also pretty good and better than I was expecting. I have sensitivity at 1 and that input option that Klobrille tweeted about on low and it feels pretty good to play. It feels like im playing Borderlands 3/Wonderlands but just less fluid and responsive but not by much.
I’m playing on hard (forgot what the difficulty level is called) which is the last one before the locked difficulty setting. I didn’t die at all but did take damage and was somewhat close to dying twice but there’s always plenty of health usually around and the enemies aren’t as bullet spongy as you would think they would be due to them all having a health bar.
The AI isn’t great overall but it isn’t horrible. I do think that Redfall should be played on hard to kinda balance out the AI issues. I love fighting the Vampires. Only fought four or five and it’s so damn satisfying to kill them. Running up to them and pressing R3 to stake them and see them burst in flames is so damn good in my opinion. Also, while im not 100% certain, I do think that you need to have a weapon equipped and slotted that has a stake attached to it in order to kill them. I gotta test this out next time I play the game.
Gameplay wise outside of combat, oh man, this is my type of game. It’s basically Far Cry and State of Decay but with Vampires. I’m exploring, scavenging and gathering resources. I love picking up all the items and I like the currency system. It’s basically “scrap” similar to Mad Max 2015. It’s not called that but it’s basically what it is. Love looting the cars and everything everywhere. lol
I also like the exploration and the lock picking/wire cutting (forgot what it’s called) setup. You’ll come across these locked doors or chests or traps like lasers that are protecting a safe and while you can buy the lock picks/wire cutters so you don’t really run out, you at times have to choose what you want to unlock unless you want to keep going back to your safe house to buy more lock picks/wire cutters.
Opening gameplay wise, I had a lock pick, opened a locked door and got the boat key (not a story spoiler) which allowed me to open that door and I ended up getting a cool level 2 shotgun. And as far as I can tell, you don’t need to be at the level of the weapon in order to use it. I really like the shotguns that I had in my play through. So satisfying.
Stealth take downs are shit as it’s just a forearm shot. And there’s no melee combat. But that’s okay because it’s a shooter which is exactly what I was looking for especially since my last pure shooter was Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands a year ago.
Open world wise, I had two encounters between opening the fire station house and going to a crashed helicopter point of interest. Both encounters were cultists but still solid.
- Story and characters. No story spoilers here. I’m extremely early and we all know the basic story and premise which is cool. I like it. Character wise, im playing as Devinder and not going to lie, he’s annoying and opening up the safe house which is basically the first main thing you do, the other side characters are kinda jokey and silly. Wish it was more serious oriented instead of light hearted. My main issue is the comic book style cinematics. I don’t like them at all. Sorry but it makes the game come across as cheap and where a game like Hi Fi Rush due to it’s art style, that cinematic presentation makes sense but in Redfall, not so much. At least not to me. Wish they had normal regular cinematics that go from that straight to gameplay and vice versa. Currently playing through Jedi Survivor and this negative in Redfall hits harder because im expecting more in this aspect.
With all of that said, I do have several nit picks which apply to games in general for me.
- When you pick up notes/documents, they don’t disappear. This annoys the hell out of me. Also, there seems to be way too many and I never read these in any game. Just not wasting my time.
- When you talk to NPC’s and they just say “hmmm” instead of the button prompt going away, this also annoys me. Why can’t the prompt disappear once the NPC said what they wanted to say? UGH.
- When crouched, the corners of the screen go “dark”. The Outer Worlds did this as well and it makes no sense because if I crouch, it doesn’t all of a sudden become darker to me in reality so this is a pet peeve of mine.
- I wish I could turn off the compass as I have never liked the compass in games. I will always prefer the mini-map. Also wish I could turn off the background that’s automatic during subtitles.
There may be other nit picks but they’re not coming to mind.
Anyway, I enjoyed what I played and will definitely be playing the game once I complete Jedi Survivor and Hi Fi Rush (on chapter 5). Redfall is simply my type of game, period.
One other note is that more times than not, I tend to like 60 and 70 rated games more than 80 and 90 rated games. A few examples for this generation based on Open Critic -
- Outriders / 73 (8.5 for me)
- The Ascent / 73 (8.5 for me)
- Dying Light 2 / 76 (9.0 for me)
- Steel Rising / 71 (8.5 for me)
I have a lot more from last generation.
In closing, I had to stop playing because the gameplay loop is all me. lol. I could have easily kept playing but it’s all good. Two more weeks isn’t going to make a difference. Definitely looking forward to getting back to the world of Redfall.
I totally agree Peter! I have to force myself to stop playing. It’s just damned fun!
Yeah I was thinking about this very thing, SOT was seen as a content issue. But from what I am reading online people also see Redfalls shortcomings as content issues as well (repetitive tasks).
However Its not a Gaas game, so it’s not just a matter of cramming stuff in, but adding variety to the world events would go a very long way; I’m just not sure if that’s where they want to take it. I hope they do, because the potential is there, just not sure if the monetary value is there.
What kind of hardware and settings are you playing on?
I think the HDR and particle effects on PC look insanely good.
Arkane’s art style is what it is - people either like it or not. But given that constraint I think it looks pretty great with maxed settings.
I am on a gaming laptop with AMD Ryzen 7 5800H and Rtx 3070 Full TPU. Game was running on medium settings which it defaulted to and left it like that. DLSS was in balanced.
The game def did not look that good for me and it struggles to hold 60fps and it drops to 20 to 30 constantly
