lmao

HD2 Steam Reviews is stuck at around 72-73%. Guess the rest has permanent damage. Shame on Sony.

It unfortunate, but the playerbase is still there.

I will be curious about Ghost of Tushima, it’s in the top sales, but not exactly setting the world on fire.

Financials were about what they expected, mix of ups and downs. Biggest changes are Sony corporate having more oversight and the shift to focusing on MAU’s over sales figures.

I need to catch up on the news of the day… How did they do on console sales? (I know, it’s not the most important thing, but for PS it’s more so)

They failed to meet expectation by .2 million. They also guide that the sales will drop even more this fiscal year.

Aha, even after they lowered it earlier this year? Yikes.

Yeah lower than expected even after revised forecast. But it’s been the same every month honestly.

It’s almost as if it is industry wide and not just Xbox. Can’t be though, right? Right?

They’re making insane amounts of money but still have far lower margins than they would like. A focus on growing user counts instead of sales numbers is their shift with more oversight in the form of Sony corporate to help the two new CEOs in keeping more money.

Did they improve the margins?

I do think they are in a very good position though tbh, their brand power is so strong that any pivot has very good chances to succeed. Once they do more of the moves we’ve allready seen on Xbox they have an advantage globally.

Sony sold 20.8M consoles between April 1st, 2023 and March 31st, 2024. A 0.2 decrease of what they were expecting from their revised 21M sales target but I see this as extremely successful because their console is $500 compared to the $300 PlayStation 4 was in Fall 2016 with the Slim. Launch aligned, PlayStation 5 is 800K units behind PlayStation 4 which again because of the price difference is really good in my opinion. Sony’s console brand is very healthy and very successful which is great because that’s what I care about as a console gamer.

Game wise, Helldivers 2 selling 12m+ copies through May 5th which is 12 weeks is fucking insane. I was thinking between 5m-10m but not over 10m. I’m expecting Sony to ramp up their PC development for all their first party games to be day one on PC before next generation starts which I believe will be November 2028.

Lifetime console sales wise, PlayStation 5 is on pace to be 3rd best at worst and 2nd best at best. So overall, extremely healthy, extremely popular and barring Sony having PS3 level fuck ups, they should have no problems and if their showcase is the “big” one which if it’s a showcase and not a state of play, then I believe it will be, there will be no issues for them whatsoever unless again, they have a PS3 level fuck up which I highly doubt.

Well, that’s not too bad then. Especially, as you point out, in the light of the prices of these things compared to last gen at this point.

Helldivers 2 is insane, 1m sales per week? Hah, yeah they are going PC day and date soon for everything.

As to your last point, yeah I don’t think it’s likely they’ll stumble like that again. With the entire media behind them any possible PR blunder or relatively unpopular change is swept away much easier than for others.

Price point difference and unlike last generation, this generation had a world wide pandemic which hurt everyone because they had a shortage on hardware and components. Imagine if Covid never happened. If Sony can at least hit 15m for this current fiscal year with no major AAA releases, I would say that if the second half of the generation is stacked for them which I believe it will be, they would only increase everything across the board.

Yep. Agree with the day one PC stuff.

Agreed on the last point too. They should stop being dumb and eliminate the PSN requirement for PC. Make it optional for the regions it exists and sell the game as normal in the regions where it doesn’t. Very easy to rectify and solve in my opinion.

I suspect we’ll see a lot more changes and at a faster pace soon with the new CEO setup. I really like the dynamic duo of a European dev and a Japanese business man. With more focus on becoming more like Xbox in some aspects (PC presence, MAU focus etc.) combined with an actual presence outside the anglosphere and being a household name, things can go very well.

Things like the Steam debacle should be avoidable in the future too yeah.

He doesn’t seem so bad.

Agreed.

I think the dual CEO approach could work out really well. One guy for gaming and one guy for the business aspects and Nishino being huge on Bloodborne and especially single player games is great news to me. Wasn’t expecting that coming from him so even better.

Yeah, this setup feels like a huge step up from Jim Ryan. PS with actually interesting leadership figures? Damn.

I like it.

For sure. It wouldn’t be a bad plan for Xbox either, I feel.

But if they feel that way too…
