Phil Spencer interview - Discusses Redfall disappointing, CMA, Hellblade II, quarterly releases, and more

Nothing comes close to Fortnite honestly, game is in another league in terms of how it adapts season after season and content delivery. I mean Epic games has a history with competitive shooters (which is why Gears is so good) but I honestly do not know how they managed to keep Fortnite so fresh and ahead of the competition after all these years. There is something deep hidden under its cartoony exterior!

Personally I can’t wait until Xbox starts making yearly Tony Hawk exclusives. I’m old school like that.

Forza Horizon is already better than anything PlayStation makes. Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein, Halo… yeah Xbox has better ip. It’s PlayStation that needs to catch up.

I hope so too. I was gutted when they got merged into Blizzard after they released the remake. Fingers crossed that Phil feels the same way.

We are unlucky SOT, Forza Horizon, SOD, FS, Grounded are characterless games, otherwise they would have sold millions.

Not sure what you mean by this. Elaborate please.

Xbox has a better future game lineup without story driven games. Imagine getting a new Tony Hawk, a new guitar hero (made by Tango), a new Halo, a new Fallout, and a new AAA Quake all in the same year. If something like Hellblade 3 releases that’s just a bonus, I’m all for it, but considering the property’s Xbox owns if they ramp up production it’s an embarrassment of riches under the right aggressive leadership.

The following year could feature Call of Duty, Elder Scrolls, Wolfenstein, yet another Tony Hawk, and Perfect Dark 2 as a bonus.

I know but I’m not sure why he said that to me lol.

I said in that paragraph that those games are played by millions.

yes, misunderstanding of myself.

Stop chasing the dragon (PlayStation)

Keep it simple. First Person Shooters and Western RPGs. Mix in some nostalgia ip like Tony hawk, 007, guitar hero, crash bandicoot.

Honestly the game is over once both Bethesda and Activision are in the fold and Xbox gets aggressive with its releases. Waiting a decade for a new fallout isn’t going to cut it though, more developers sharing and assisting will be needed to make this happen.

Solving the TES and Fallout situation seems like an impossible task lol.

I wished they asked Phil in the interview on what his thoughts are on that.

I understand people might call it “fantasy football style video game ceo” to make release schedules like this but. Why not dare to dream? After all not too long ago Activision, Bethesda, and Xbox all held yearly E3 press conferences. I’m not too fond of excuses . I absolutely think Phil Spencer is great and should keep his gig for his lifetime if he wants it, but once Activision is in the fold I want games faster, no more waiting and never ending excuses.

There should be a 3 year stretch like…

  1. new Forza Horizon, new 007 game (buy the rights), new Crash bandicoot, new Callof Duty

  2. a new Tony Hawk, a new guitar hero (made by Tango), a new Halo, a new Fallout, and a new AAA Quake, new Hellblade

  3. The following year could feature Call of Duty, Elder Scrolls, Wolfenstein, yet another Tony Hawk, and Perfect Dark 2 as a bonus.

Videogame fans used to know how to have dreams and expectations from the industry. Bring that attitude back :peace_symbol:

That’s hard to do man. This isn’t the 2000’s where people would crunch for 20 hours a day lol.

Game development is too fluid for this sort of cadence but I do believe in a couple of years it’ll be achievable in a lower scale.

I get that. Luckily Xbox has a big enough roster for substitutions. If something on my quick thrown together list can’t make it, sub in Simpsons Hit and Run reboot, Doom, Fable, Minecraft something, killer instinct, Gears of War, Forza, StarCraft, Warcraft 4… when I say no excuses this is kind of what I mean. Have back up plans and contingencies.

Like yeah it would suck to not get new Crash cart racing game because it’s delayed but hey here’s a new Diablo :joy:

If Xbox were to buy Sega. That would make some fun possibilities too. It’s so close to being possible. A Sega purchase would surely fill in any gaps on my plan would they not?

Games take more time now than before, this is a general trend of the industry. Deal with it. They cost more, they take more time to deliver, they need DLC and MTX to get a good ROI.

or play indies games, which are also suffering the same fate, but start from lower.

I think my issue with character based games is almost all of them bar the bioware of old are fixed into the story the developer has created. You almost always take the same journey everyone else has taken. Probably why I will always treasure the original dragon age, mass effect trilogy, fallout 3 and skyrim. In those games you took a journey that could be very different from your friends and it was great discussing the way you played through the game.

Feel like I’m reading a comment on Eurogamer here.

Just listened to a bit of podcast unlocked…had to turn it off. These people are unhinged. Xbox doesn’t want to win…we have no confidence in them…wah wah…

No wonder the console wars thrive out there when you have journalists with such nonsense.

Haha there’s nothing that would make me listen to that. The moment Ryan tweeted “last straw” I knew it would be dumbest thing imaginable.

Plus, Unlocked always felt very corporate. Like, other podcasts feel like a discussion between friends. Unlocked always had this stuck up vibe to it.

The simple answer is don’t give clicks to those people, they will look like fools after the June showcase anyway and I bet that they know it but still decide to spread some doom & gloom BS…they WILL say every dumb hot take that comes to their mind just for the clicks. :man_shrugging:

Channel your inner Phil. Ryan used to get all kinds of contact with Xbox leadership. Wonder why he doesn’t anymore?
