Phil Spencer interview - Discusses Redfall disappointing, CMA, Hellblade II, quarterly releases, and more

Again I think people are missing what MS is doing. They aren’t trying to dominate any particular market, that would just a bonus if it happens. What they are doing is trying to be an important part of everything. They want to be into hardware, games (physical, subscription, mobile), development, AI, cloud, etc… They want their fingers in all the pies so to speak. This is why Phil’s words aren’t what some people want to hear. They really aren’t trying to overtake Sony in this narrow “hardcore gaming device” market. They aren’t thinking “We need AAA 10/10 games to beat Sony and win NPD/Media Create/List Warz” they are trying to create this all encompassing ecosystem.

If they can get to the point where all games on Xbox can be played on console, or PC, or cloud with cross saves that would be really special.

And who says people have to sell their PS5s? If Xbox manages to release a lot of must have AAA exclusives (games that appeal to a broader casual audience and not just hardcore, Sony has been able to do this since last gen) they can have a healthier market share in the console space without people having to sell their Switches or PlayStations.

Facts, and it’s confusing because even Phil has admitted that Game Pass has a limit and they DO need as many console sales as they can get to be able to get even more Game Pass subscribers because I just don’t believe they will be able to remedy that through the cloud any time soon, most Xbox fans are console players first and foremost and the fastest and more realistic way to “fix” their issues is to fix their console issues, Game Pass and Xcloud should be the priority AFTER consoles.

Alot of gamers and gaming journos just want Sony to hold a console monopoly. They are at an age where a PS was their first console and they dont know gaming before Sony and think Sony=gaming.

The gamepass thing was the best Xbox invention, that did repaired very well the damaged reputation, obviously they will always mention gamepass, but I understand your point. btw the acquisitions exists for a reason

I don’t have any problem with Phil doing these type of interviews and engaging with consumers. However, I do have a problem with Microsoft and Xbox supporting any of the sites or publications that pile up the bullshit in response. These publications arent massive economically or superprofitable yet they cause massive headaches for Microsoft and Xbox. The solution is to fund their smaller competitors very well and reap the rewards. They need to get over the huge Sony media hurdle.

What do you mean by fund …

His quote got taken out of context. He wasnt saying great games wont matter. He said its not going to significantly change the lanscape of the console market. How did all those great games help the wii u. Wii u had more AAA exclusives than switch in its first 4 years.

Even if a redfall is 10/10. Starfield forA hellblade etc…it aint doing ps5 numbers. At best series outsels ps5 in NA.

Also Yon Yea is a fucking hypocrit and a tool. Guy literally says his xbox collects dust but then says he will play xbox games on pc so it doesnt matter. So why do you own an xbox then you dimwit.

Hate people like this.

I agree, but by fund I think it should be to provide smaller media with news stories, new game trailers, interviews, providing them early review codes, before anyone else or just them. Simply put they have to treat the media that treats them bad like an after thought, with the minimal thing they should do is provide trailers after at least 3 to 5 days.

If they take an interview like this one and spin it, do what Lulu did and force them to print the facts or face having their articles taken down. But they would never do this because Microsoft doesn’t seem to care defend themselves if it means people will start saying the old Microsoft.

Yeah. I remember when Phil put Crapgamer in his place, but then again that might be what they want. These people would gladly shove their grandmothers down a flight of stairs if it gave them enough clicks and engagement.

Do people not understand what the word ‘dramatic’ means?

At no point in the interview did Phil say that Xbox will not make great games, or that great games will not sell consoles or even help close the gap. He specifically said, “great games won’t move the console share in some dramatic way” and he’s right.

Releasing Starfield, Forza and Hellblade 2 to 90+ metacritic scores is not going to suddenly make Xbox console king and help them leapfrog Sony and Nintendo.

Some will say, “yah but 360 did it”. It took an entire year head start and 100s of millions of dollars in spending on exclusive content, plus a colossal faceplant by arrogant Sony (second job, hard to develop for, no games, etc.) to push the 360 to 2nd place in the ‘console war’.

Oh, they know, but its handwaved away because they sell well. Who cares if they are low effort cash grabs as long as they move units, right? As a gamer, thats what i care about the most. /s

Who does, Phil?

People already talk about the old Microsoft with everything. They really need to stop caring about that

Okay cool, just checking before flagging for trolling.

Trolling? It’s just my opinion, you can even read journalists who analyzed his recent interviews. There are suggestions that Microsoft is not happy with Spencer’s management and change is possible. His apologetic interview discussed in this topic further fuels those opinions and rumours.

Xbox is more profitable than ever, the journalists who suggest this do not know what they are talking about.
