Some guy from Kotaku is going so far to say it was basically fake. But I doubt it, because Kotaku has a history of being, well Kotaku.
So it was all vertical slices they were working on the whole time. That is crazy. Seven years. Wow.
I don’t know who decided to show that trailer a year ago, but they probably shouldn’t be calling the shots on what to reveal to the public any more.
Yeah, this one hurts. It’s somewhat understandable if the progress of development was as dire as some places are reporting, but it reflects poorly on Xbox leadership either way.
I doubt Microsoft will be throwing around the “AAAA” term again anytime soon.

But it’s been used by the media to bash the studio every chance they got - and they’re far too gleeful at its demise…

I get that people had hopes and dreams. But this news can’t possibly surprise anyone.
This expensive “AAAA” studio, with the help of yet another premium studio on top, produced absolutely nothing in 7 years. The writing’s been on the wall for quite some time. While I would’ve been happy to be proven wrong, I’m honestly surprised that MS put up with it for as long as they have.

MS, Xbox nor The Initiative ever announced any such claim.
The only surprise I think is after the gameplay reveal - it did look good and I was looking forward to it.
Without that reveal, no one would be shocked at all - but I’m guessing they had a demo level plus base systems / engine work going but still had tonnes of levels and character work to do that made it further out than we all hoped…
But yeah if they’d not done the reveal this wouldn’t have been even remotely a surprise
7 years since this studio was founded, at least 5 years since the Perfect Dark announcement and when they showed the gameplay last year it looked really good, they even got a freaking established studio to help and now they cancel it just like that, with that being said, it was about to take at least 8-9 years since the date the studio was founded for them to release a game and it would’ve been with the help of another studio, it makes me angry that with all this wasted time and money it is the devs that will pay the price and not a single higher up afaik, their jobs seem to be safe.
I understand Everwild getting the axe because that game has been unheard of for over 5 years so it was probably on ice at Rare anyway who are just a Sea of thieves DLC factory these days, but Perfect Dark shocks me and pisses me off, I was really looking forward to that, Zenimax also shocks me, this thing was also in development for so long and it is Zenimax Online, a very successful studio, maybe stop wasting time by making us wait 20 years for Elder Scrolls 6 and put that studio to work Elder Scrolls 6, besides Everwild, I don’t think these cancellations were just because of troubled development, I think it was mainly a money move, screw this greedy ass corporation.
The question should be why Matt Booty (and his team) put up with the project for so long and why they chose to show a “gameplay” (supposedly fake?) trailer last year if they knew that the project was not going well? and if he didn’t know that the project wasn’t going well then that’s a big problem too. 
So it’s fake based on a rumor from NeoGAF. I just watched it again. From my observation it appeared they had game play in the trailer including the HUD.
Because that’s how games work. There’s still value in a studio with a game several years away. MS changed the expectations of the business, and some thing no longer hit the marks needed.
This fucking sucks.
Finding out that last year’s demo might have been BS? Sucks in such a different, maybe worse way.

PD was high on my list after that trailer too.
