Nintendo has filed a patent infringement lawsuit on Pocket Pair

I wonder if this patent would also effect any future Dragon Quest games that allow us to capture monsters?

I hope Nintendo loses, because the idea of being able to patent game design ideas and/or functions sounds like the worst possible thing for gaming. Imagine being able to patent “Jumping” or “Space Marine fighting aliens”. It would ruin the industry.

Also, f*** Nintendo. They’re bullies and they do the dirtiest most vindictive shit but they get a free pass because their games are colorful and fun. It’s annoying.

Florian Mueller looked at some of the patents others had guessed at being involved. Lots of text involved so click through to read it all.

Pretty much this. If Palworld bombed, this topic and in turn, Nintendo’s lawsuit wouldn’t even exist.

So from what I am reading, Nintendo isn’t suing for copyright infringement so it isn’t about similar designs, they are suing regarding patents on gameplay designs/systems. Apparently this is easier to do in Japan, but it still seems like a tough case to not-a-lawyer me.

It gets pretty weird if the patent that they’re using really is the one they filed at the end of 2023. Because imo it could mean they anticipated Palworld may get big and wanted a way to limit the games growth.
