Halo Infinite started this trend and Microsoft Gaming should follow through with it across the portfolio. Adjust elsewhere where needed to make sure its games remain profitable. We’ve seen it elsewhere with Helldivers and now Marvel Rivals. The last one in particular will put a lot of pressure on Overwatch 2 to follow suit. It should have been done before to be honest. It makes no sense to have one game in their portfolio doing this but not others, especially when competitors are following suit.
I’d love to see more games switch over, but FOMO is their main driver of revenue. I blame gamers who keep feeding the machine for those offering expiring battle passes.
Xbox has other means of upselling gamers into Battle Passes though. For instance Game Pass gives a +10% boost to Overwatch 2 BP exp gain. They have the tools to get enough revenue while having a great pro-gamer/pro-consumer selling point to their live service catalogue if they want to.
Not a chance OW or COD does that. However, I think Microsoft should make their other games adopt the non-expiring battle passes. I thought Halo Infinite was refreshing and it did make me purchase more battle passes than I usually do because I like the thought of allowing me to earn when i get back to the game intriguing
The current model makes a ton, and they’ve trained their audience to experience FOMO with content. It would be good for consumers, but COD and OW current model is driven by FOMO
