Microsoft Movies and TV app is shutting down (content bought still available)

So I just got a message on my Xbox that Movies and TV app is getting closed. In the Xbox Store, the Movies and TV section is virtually closed: while still being there in the menu, there’s just nothing to see.

I bought so many movies on sale so I’m quite sad. That was my main way of getting movies ouside of my DVDs and Blu-Rays collection.

What’s really pathetic is that they just closed it without prior warnings, although I had noticed that there were no weekly sales on movies anymore which was odd.

Edit: yep even says on their website.

I’m surprised to see it last this long. Well, it was fun while it lasted.

I only ever bought movies from it if they were movies anywhere titles. I buy most of mine on Apple because music and TV is more of a core part of their business.

That and the Apple TV app is basically available on everything under the sun.

I only got free movies/series. I think it’s Naruto.

PlayStation dropped this 4 years ago, and they are a movie/tv company. I am surprised it took this long for Xbox to close this down.

Probably didn’t make any sense financially, although sometimes you wonder if they could have made an android and ios app to give it more reach. I’m personally all physical on movies due to the video quality being much more superior to streaming, but if digital, streaming seems to be dominating and so MS has very little chance unless they’d go out and buy one of the main streaming services, which I doubt they will.

Let me just use a typical DreamcastChump picture real quick.

It’s officially over now.

I would have hoped they could do the same as the Xbox app on PC and do a all in one app that can stream all of your movies. It feels like the thing is now abandonned and left to rot over time.

How long will I be able to stream my library of movies ? I don’t know. Nothing is forever and it sucks, as MS was supposed to be better at prrservation than all the others. That’s a lesson learned for me I guess.

So how will this work in the future? I think in the short term I expect to maintain Movies Anywhere rights, but 5-10 years from now, will it just quietly disappear one day?

Just log in to one of the other services…your movies will be there.

Doesn’t work in all countries unfortunately as far as I know, I think it’s a US thing only

Sure, but considering he posted a screenshot of a movies anywhere account with multiple connected accounts it’s not a stretch, you know, to assume he is using movies anywhere.

Oh for sure. Guess I should have been more specific. I was trying to say that unfortunately this stuff doesn’t work outside the US for the rest of the world who have invested in the MS store. Wish they’d have figured something out so that everyone could transfer their purchases over to another store.

I’m fortunate that Microsoft Movies /TV was never my main digital locker. I primarily bought my library on Vudu and iTunes (which became Fandango and AppleTV). I probably only have a dozen movies on Microsoft’s locker. I own thousands of digital movies. I’m a big movie fan so once dvds were being phased out I tried to build a big collection from torrenting but my internet service provider got mad at me and froze my service  Once I was getting internet turned off and cease and desist letters from Hollywood I just said fuck it and started rebuilding my collection through Vudu and iTunes. These days I’m mostly streaming services for new content, but I love having access to all my favorites from the past too. It’s nice to have a forever library of movies and not need to depend completely on streaming services.

The concern is once that “Microsoft” tab goes away in Movies Anywheres connected settings then those movies are gone. Plus it really sucks for people that bought lots of movies from Microsoft, it’s basically the beginning of the end.

That, to my knowledge, is not how it works. Movies anywhere purchases are tied to movies anywhere, not the store your purchased it from.

Trust me they are tied to the store you purchased from, you have to periodically reconnect the stores on that page I posted a picture of.

Well, if thats the case. You just have to deal with it. The law says you dont own it anyway. Its the gamble you take with digital media.
