That’s one hell of a beer to hold…
What do you expect an executive at a company to say when there are layoffs? There will always be PR stuff, all companies do it, no company treats it differently, and there is nothing “scummy” about it. The executives at Xbox aren’t making any decisions carelessly, and no one is doing it without caring about their employees. This is the way the system is setup to be in a free capitalist market. Seeing people throw a tantrum on Twitter because they were made redundant or somewhere where there were inefficiencies found and budget cuts needed isn’t scummy, that’s just the way you run business in order to maximize profits. If some studios haven’t delivered recently there is a good chance they were first on the chopping block.
We already know the Xbox division is expected to be self sustainable and approach the 30% profit MS wants from all their divisions. That won’t happen with mass hiring and careless running of their studios and if all their products keep coming out on time and at a high even of quality, we’ll know they did their job right.
Pretty significant update: Toys for Bob is apparently shutting down? Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard to lay off 162 Bay Area workers (sfchronicle.com)
No, not apparently “shutting down”. I wrote this in the other thread
You’re going to see “Toys 4 Bob is closing down!” The reality that all we know right now is that they’re closing their current building. Sledgehammer reportedly is doing that as well, and for Sledgehammer it is a cost-cutting measure and moving to somewhere smaller due to their reduced headcount. Please don’t panic, as this CA notification is tied to the same announcement we had last week and not “new”.
I really, r e a l l y, hope this is tha case. Please…
It’s tied to the 98 fired, it’s not a new firing. They would have announced a studio closure then, no?
People clarified this in the OtherEra thread and yet people are ignoring that and jumped straight to the conclusion that they’ve closed the studio down and are losing their shit.
Boggles my mind that actual devs and people in the industry post there.
I honestly think the circus is the community, and the influencers are the ring leaders. But I get why people are anxious & want answers.

But Tim told me it’s closed…
Note: I believe he needs to seriously go away from social media. For his health sake.
Who is Tim? I’m from Spain and only know a few personalities (Schreier, Jez, Tom, Totilo… fans like Klobrille, Crusader Elessar… And no much more)
It’s a guy who was a die hard fan of Xbox and apparently has all the source to confirm or deny the leak, even if they could be just blueprint. He said Toys for Bob was closed completely only for journalists to say otherwise. He has been going through his episodes. I have no ill will, rather wish he gets his head cleared and not involved with social media. It’s rather unhealthy.
Anyway, I do believe Activision decision to force everyone back to work and remove at home option made it difficult for Microsoft as it is already. Layoff is expected (unfortunately) but everything else is cleaning the mess left behind.
Tim dog said that? Lol and people still considers him a good source of information
Was it all worth it ?
It’s like the FTC doesn’t do any research .
Literally Sega, Embracer and a few others all announced layoffs before/after Xbox did. They only had to monitor the news.
Honestly? Probably yes in my opinion. Whatever changes are coming up would have happened anyway, and I believe Activision would have laid off nearly as many, would still be a worse place to work.
Amazing they hired so much people last year.
Yes?
At the cost of Xbox consoles?
Who says we’re losing Xbox consoles? Also, not the thread for that type of talk.
