Microsoft launching free ad-supported Xbox Cloud Gaming Service, says new report

That would be insane. I can’t see how it would work, especially with multiplayer games. It can’t be every games, maybe a small selection of curated games that work for short play session.

Don’t we already have an example with Nvidia GFN? How does it deal with the issue? (My only experience with GFN is when I used the most expensive tier on sale, so I’m lost on the free tier)

GFN is a ā€˜bring you own games’ service. It’s also running PC games, so there isn’t a fee for multiplayer unless it’s an MMO.

As for this free ad-supported Xbox Cloud Gaming service, I’m going to guess it will be similar to Game Pass essentials.

Lot of questions here

What about the catalog

The amount of adds

Where the adds are set (automatically or at loading ?)

So with @Jeans comment I read the issue as being that games would have to be played in chunks and only certain games available as a result. That’s why I asked how Nvidia GFN handles this and the limited play time. I’m going to assume they figure out the console pay wall. I’m just following to see if maybe we have an answer on how they might deal with timed gaming sessions.

Kind of sounds a bit more like a ā€œfree trialā€ to get folks to sub to a tier with more Cloud usage included.

LOL at that first sentence!

This doesn’t sound very appealing if it’s limited to games you already own. I use xCloud now for streaming games to other TVs in my house that the Series X isn’t hooked up to, and it’s great for that. But having to watch minutes of ads and then only be able to play for an hour… :face_vomiting:

Sources tell me the internal testing includes around two minutes of preroll ads before a game is available to stream for free through Xbox Cloud Gaming. Microsoft is also currently testing a limit of one hour for sessions, with up to five hours free a month. These limits may well change when the service is officially launched.

It seems to be pretty limited, just to give a taste, trying a few games before comitting to them.

The thing with this sort of thing is… It’s not for us. So why do we care?

I think it needs to be more than just 5 hours a month though and ideally, it needs to be more than just for demoing stuff and a full blown tier just like Netflix.

This could make Gamepass blow out!

this sounds about right. cloud is expensive and ad revenue not at the high it was five years ago.

Why don’t they instead make it so you can potentially get any of the GP tiers for cheaper with a special ad tier. Like while I know not everyone will use cloud, maybe they could figure out a way to show ads before each GP game you boot or something like that.
