Microsoft Financial Earnings Report Q2 2024

If your metric is “console sales” sure. If it’s “making money” like 100% of all businesses, then huh?

Yes console sales, which is what the discussion was about

Fortunately they aren’t just console, if the rumours are to be believed we only have two years left anyway until the next Xbox .

I hope it’s true, I feel this is as much of a shakeup as MS going full third party imo lol

Me too, I’m still more than happy with my S but I really want a shake up in the hardware market

So the cost of the aquisition was a bit north of 1 billion dollars.

I suspect with the the sheer scale of ABK, we will see further implementation costs creep into this next quarter too.

I do want to point out that after spending $80 billion on gaming, those overall MS profits don’t mean anything. The gaming division needs to carry themselves and post a healthy profit margin.

Yup, I just hope Microsoft will do something innovative with the next console, not just better performance and graphics etc. I want to see how they integrate AI on it for example, like for upscaling, a Xbox “copilot, NPC’s in games etc., like something unique that Sony or Nintendo don’t have. I feel like that would sell the Xbox to casual markets( casuals like the new and shiny things).

Thats nothing new. Phil Spencer and Don Mattric before had this pressure for a looooooong time.

It doesn’t even necessarily have to be innovative just appealing. You could say the XBone was innovative but not in the right areas!

Most things have their own USP and Xbox’s is probably Gamepass right now. Everything else is a bit scattered.

At the rate the consoles are selling currently I doubt they can “survive” these 2 years. According to Welfare xbox series consoles have sold 30M so far and while I would say its a good number (far from perfect of course) time is proving again and again that these consoles are selling less than the xbox one.

The problem is not selling less than the one, thw problem is if series consoles end up selling far faaaar less than the one because at the current pace of sales the new console will end up selling less than 50M if they wait the full generation.

Selling less than XB1 really isn’t surprising at this point, XB1 had a strong first couple of years in regards to games and it was also only really competing against the PS4 because the Wii U was one of the most unwanted pieces of crap to ever exist

Meanwhile Series has been going up against the PS5 which has been riding all of it’s momentum from last gen and had the big games like Spiderman and GoW and is also competing against a Nintendo that have never been more popular, not to mention their game cadence and quality in terms of big games has been completely inconsistent and this was the first gen where theyt finally went all in on PC from Day 1

The fact they are only 2 million behind Xbox One is actually far better than I would have expected considering all the above but the question is how good or bad will they be from here going forward,I certainly don’t see them surpassing XB1 by the end but I don’t think they have to to be successful, whats more important is keeping those who do buy the console invested in GP and not letting them leave

I guess the bigger question is what are they trying to ‘survive’ in the interim?

Their MAU is the highest it’s ever been, as is their revenue. We can also comfortably say their first party lineup is the most stacked it’s ever been and they are selling more of their first party games since the 360 era.

2024 and 2025 look to be huge for exclusives so it could convince more people to pick up a X/S, especially if they continue dropping in price.

I suspect GamePass subscribers have increased too (or will by end of 2024).

Microsoft want to increase Xbox console sales significantly they still have one big move they could do, would be far more impactful that any great first party lineup could, which is partnering with Rockstar on GTA 6 bundles especially the Series S, a hypothetical $250 Series S GTA 6 bundle would sell like hot cakes.

I doubt they get anything related to GTA 6 (marketing/bundles), and with their current strategy towards consoles I see the current performance being the norm.

I got to say, 200 million MAU is pretty crazy.

I get the reasoning of why MS decided( allegedly) to put some first party games on other platforms. What I don’t get and they should get flack for is why are they cutting down the budget for their marketing? If you are trying to sell a consumer product, marketing it is a must, I mean that’s how you convince costumers to buy the Xbox or gamepass etc., it’s head scratching honestly.

But let’s just keep hammering on console sale because we live in darkness.
