Exactly! I bought the Series X on a very clear promise that Xbox is going to be a “creator led” platform with Game Pass securing creative games of all sizes.
That’s why Pentiment is one of my favourite games of all time. This Xbox is dead and barely ever existed.
We might get one batch of cool games since those are nearly finished but after that, 0 confidence that those studios will even survive.
Ugh as if Xbox needed anymore negative press, I wake up to this news. I am so shocked and angry at this decision. Microsoft should not be allowed to buy any other Game publishers or studios after this. All of the talk about supporting small creative teams with gamepass and building up promising studios and teams was BS. Phil kept harping on bringing back stagnant IP with ABK and pulling teams out of the COD mines was misdirection. They just wanted already successful IP so they can place all resources and devs to milk them until they are dead. I knew something was wrong when they let Toys for Bob go. The pile of dead IP they own just keeps growing. Pretty soon they won’t have studios to work on any IP other than COD, Fallout, Elderscrolls, Minecraft, and maybe Forza. I wonder what they plan to do when they have milked those IP to the point where they are shells of their former selves and no longer make money. I guess they will look at what is big at the time make a big push to purchase them and the cycle repeats… I wish Xbox would have been split off or sold to someone who cares about gaming at the end of the 360 days… Microsoft has done nothing but ruin it.
100% agreed here; the leadership across all these companies are where the buck stops, they’re literally the only ones accountable in the moment.
I would just kindly remind people that you can do so without resorting to toxic behavior (no death threats, for example, should be a given).
This is absurd; Phil has received plenty of criticism here, and definitely across the internet. This just happens to be one of the times when I would argue the criticism is actually justified
This is fucking awful news! These have got to be some of the worst decisions made. As it impacts their mobile strategy, their growth in Japan and the making games for game pass strategy.
If this is about cost, then imo that’s a laughable excuse. They have barely even done anything towards their mobile strategy because ABK has been doing all the lifting. As Microsoft keeps pinning some massive hopes on a 3rd party store that we have no way of knowing if it will attract enough people to keep open in 3 months.
A cult of personality amongst the core base of xbox consumers… people have been skeptical about his strategy for years on here, yet that criticism has always been deemed dooming or concern trolling.
I’m definitely with Nick. Wish the ABK acquisition never went through because since then, it’s been one horrible decision after another for the fans of Xbox and now, even worse, for the employees at Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, Roundhouse and Alpha Dog.
Don’t think the ABK acquisition has anything to do with it, if anything, it at least brings in more revenues and keeps the division in the green.
Times are changing, the way people spend money on games has changed and so unfortunately my feeling is that the build up to what MS was trying to achieve unfortunately happened too late and by the time they were ready to go the game had changed again and now the industry is already chasing new trends and so MS is again trying to adapt on the fly.
The problem is these days, games take 4-5 years to make and trends change much faster than that so it’s getting harder to follow gamers and the console industry is shrinking at the same time and MS is feeling most of it compared to the other 2 competitors who are lucky and will most likely be the last ones to feel it.
I’m in for the long haul anyway, always felt at home at Xbox and much prefer their ecosystem to the competition and I know MS will right the ship, or at least I feel like they will.
